This is Ms Lotz at her best! Her approach breaks down what many think [believe?] to be the complexities of prayer by using the rudiments of Daniel's prayer from chapter 9 of his book in the OT. The reader quickly comes to appreciate that the essence of The Daniel Prayer hope, humility, and wisdom respectively birth courage, credibility, and perspective. Daniel demonstrated each of these qualities qualifying him to become a leader of the Empire of Babylon. The collective influence of these essences are guideposts for the 21st century. Give yourself a treat; purchase and study "the prayer that moves heaven and changes nations". It enriched my perspective of spiritual life in contemporary culture, and I pray that it may do the same for you!

I have a long way to go. So much to learn. So I am taking this slowly. Only in the second chapter so far. I told myself to implement what I've read before reading further. This is very uplifting, inspiring, but also challenging. Like the wise maidens, I want to be faithful and have oil in my lamp. A rusty hinge needs a lot of oil. And I am rusty. Also I am compelled: chapter two.

Thanks to Anne for her incredible teaching on prayer. I especially appreciate the teaching on the importance of long-haul praying. There are some things that it seems like I've been praying for my entire life. Daniel prayed for some things for his entire life also. So, if we want to be like Daniel, we can't give up. We need to keep praying for the long-haul.This challenges becomes real for many as they lament the life-wounding decisions their Millennial children and grandchildren have made and are making. However, Daniel's encouragement to us is to never give up and keep praying for them. When we are like Daniel in our prayers, God can make Daniel out of the Millennials that we are mentoring, coaching and discipling.

At the beginning there was a lot of repetition. Then at the 40 percent level of my Kindle Fire I felt literally "slapped in the face to wake up and read" . From that point on I was enthralled with the wisdom and clearly God's message through this book. Everyone who reads this book will see themselves. Sometimes good sometimes not!

I believe this is a must read for every Christian. Anne takes the reader through effective prayer step by step. It's not a set prayer like the Our Father or Apostle's Creed, rather it's preparing your heart and praying God's promises. So grateful to her for writing this!

Please buy or borrow this book, I have all ready read it and lent it to a friend.......talk about a closer walk with God, it has truly blessed me and I am deeper in His word than I have ever been....I will be reading it many times. It was almost like precept study, layers and layers of truths about how we pray, praying effectively and how Daniel prayed (I am going back and reading Daniel again this summer)...love Anne Graham Lotz, I spend time in her online devotionals every morning that I can and what a lift to your day...go, buy it, our nation and world is in turmoil as never seen before and pray with a strength that you will be amazed at....

I bought the Kindle version of this book for myself. I have enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Mrs Graham Lotz not only discusses Daniel's prayers but those for his people as well. She guides you through today's troubling times with prayer pulling not only scriptures from Daniel but from other books in the Bible. She discusses how she herself had to 'Make' time for prayer in her own packed daily schedule.I have a sister-in-law just this week diagnosed with breast cancer, I will be sending her this book in hopes that it will help her through this new challenge she now faces.

This book will remind you that praying has more to do with God than with you, the important thing is to pray! The prayers at the end of this book are not only inspiring, but perfect templates to start your battle with.Read it! Pray! And watch God work!!

The Last Mughal: The Fall of a Dynasty: Delhi, 1857, by William Dalrymple

Review

“A compulsively readable masterpiece. . . . Every chapter of The Last Mughal has historical echoes that are still desperately relevant today.” —The New York Review of Books “Deeply researched and beautifully written. . . . A poignant account of the events of 1857 in Delhi.” —The Nation“There is so much to admire in this book - the depth of historical research, the finely evocative writing, the extraordinary rapport with the cultural world of late Mughal India. It is also in many ways a remarkably humane and egalitarian history . . . This is a splendid work of empathetic scholarship.” —David Arnold, Times Literary Supplement

Neither William Dalrymple nor 'The Last Mughal' need another positive review after all the prior accolades they have received. This 2006 work continues the amazing metamorphosis of a travel writer into a historian. The writing seems effortless, although a tremendous amount of research has been done. Perhaps this is partly due to the author's passion for the world of which he writes, but it also must be more than that. Greatness is sometimes easy to recognize and yet difficult to describe. The book tells of the last emperor at the time of the Indian rebellion of 1857. In the final days of the dynasty real power had been ceded to the British, but the emperor was allowed to remain as a figurehead. In preceding centuries the descendants of Islamic conquerors ruled partly by consensus, and a degree of religious freedom existed between Muslims and Hindus. The empire and its court were responsible for a great body of architecture and literature that flourished up to the time of its demise. Many earlier British settlers had adapted to local customs and culture, intermarrying and in some cases converting to Islam. In the mid 19th century a wave of Christian evangelism became prevalent, and efforts were made to promote the conversion of native religions. This culminated in a military rebellion when indigenous troops under British command were ordered to trespass religious taboos, such as traveling overseas, mixing castes and breaking dietary restrictions. The religious underpinnings of the rebellion were exacerbated by an untimely British decision to end the Mughal line of succession. The ensuing war was the greatest challenge to colonial power since the American Revolution and ultimately resulted in the transfer of East India Company rule to the British crown. After Shah Jafar was captured he was tried for aiding the rebellion, and exiled to live out his remaining years under house arrest in Rangoon, British Burma. This pivotal period of history is delivered in a scholarly but not overly academic manner. It only covers Delhi, the epicenter of the rebellion. Events in Lucknow and Kanpur must be read about elsewhere. The story is told through eyewitness accounts by British and Indian participants. Many of the sources are new, culled from rediscovered archives written in Farsi and Urdu. The research is greatly complemented by the superb storytelling abilities of the author.

For nearly 300 years the Mughals ruled India in addition to what is now Pakistan and Bangladesh but by the 1850s their rule was in a terminal decline. The British East India Company and other colonial forces had eaten away at their power and local governors were virtually independent. The increasingly ambitious British were making plans for remake India in their image and the Mughals were not a part of the plan.In this book William Dalrymple tells the story of Zafar, the last Mughal Emperor as he finds himself thrust into the largest anti-colonial war of the 19th Century the Indian Mutiny/Uprising of 1857. It's a grim story with atrocities and stupidity on both sites. This is not a light read. It is probably the definitive account of of the war drawing on British, Indian and Pakistani records, some never translated before. Diaries, letters and other personal accounts provide a vivid first-hand account.Dalrymple's writing also does not make things easy for the reader, he never says washerman when he can say 'dhobi' , never says police station if he can say 'thana'. He's usually good at defining the Urdu words in context and the Kindle dictionary or his glossary cover most of the rest but the use of Indian terms plus the Victorian terms from many of the accounts make this a bit of a chore to read sometimes. The publisher also put no effort into creating the ebook. For example photos in the print version are, of necessity, in their own section on special paper. But in an ebook there's no reason they can't be placed among the text where they belong in context. Instead they just suddenly appear as a block in the middle of a chapter interrupting the text. I also find it hard to flip to the maps and glossary on an ebook, I might have enjoyed this more on paper. Finally I found the conclusion a bit abrupt. Yes, ending 'The Last Mughal' with the death of the last Mughal makes sense, but another chapter covering the transition from the British East India Company to the British Raj would be help finish the story. Instead there's some overly simplified conclusions mourning the loss of the Mughal's cosmopolitan rule and trying to link the uprising to the rise of Al Qaeda and the September 11th attacks 150 years later. All that being said, this was a great read, an incredible work of scholarship and storytelling and anyone with an interest in India will enjoy it.

This book does a good job of describing Delhi, before and after the 1857 mutiny against the British. I had no idea that the rebellion had such tremendous effect on Delhi. The social fabric of city drastically changed. Bahadur Shah Zafar comes across as an old sympathetic figure, who because of his age and demeanor couldn’t play as big of a role as he could have. The book moves you to feel bad for Delhi—a beautiful cultural city—utterly disfigured during and after the rebellion, by both the mutineers and the British.

William Dalrymple has the extraordinary ability to take a historical event of great complexity and produce a text that is utterly readable, yet without oversimplifying the issues. He examines the Indian Mutiny from the point of view of both sides. There are no heroes in this story.A warning, however - buy a hard copy of this book. The Kindle edition is a disgraceful mess of faulty computer scanning. It may seem inexpensive, but it's not worth the money.

Seldom have I read a book so intriguing. For the first time the story of the 1857 Sepoy Rebellion is told from both sides. Dalrymple has consulted the archives in all the languages, not just English, and so one begins to understand the tottering nature of the Mughal dynasty in the decades before 1857 and its end after 1857. The case for labeling the mutton-headedness of the East India Company has rarely been so well documented. As I've remarked about Dalrymple's history of the 1839 - 1842 Afghan wars, I expected to find racial prejudice among the company's officers and army. I hadn't expected it to be so crude, but most of all I never expected the Company to be so incompetent. Dalrymple shows. It's a book that both non-specialists like myself and professional historians will profit from.

Another great devotional in the style of Sarah Young. The ease of application to personal life is excellent.

This is a beautiful book to keep for oneself or for gift giving! The layout, paper quality, the size of print, AND of course, the content are exceptional. I like how it addresses more of how God is loving AND sovereign, and life is not always easy.I also ordered the smaller version of the book. It is vey similar except that it is hard-bound and everything is greatly reduced in size. That changes the way it feels in the hand (harder & thicker, more stocky, harder to hold open and of course with smaller print). If those things are not an issue but space is, then the smaller one does the job. However, the larger one gets my highest recommendation. In fact, I like it so much that I am ordering 5 extra to give as gifts.I have read and marked my copy of JESUS CALLING up over the years. I didn't see how any other books would be necessary, but this one also has its place. Thank you, Sarah, for being brave enough to share what you are hearing from God, and for including Scriptures that let you know it was indeed God speaking to you!

Another great book by Sarah Young. As I'm going through my own family tragedy, both this book and her Jesus Calling have been great in reminding me of God's promises, of His unfailing love and that He is and always will be bigger than anything life can throw at me.

As other devotional books by Sarah Young, this edition is as inspiring, educational, and in this case, about hope. Written while Mrs.Young was very ill from Lyme's Disease, it features daily devotionals rendered from Bible Scripture and Jesus' words to the reader in modern vernacular. I enjoy reading from this each day, and it is now a part of my "Jesus Calling" collection.

Sara Young has such an amazing gift. This book is written in the similar style of her Jesus Calling book, spoken from Gods perspective drawn from scripture. After the amazing daily reading, she lists the scripture that supports the writing. I don't know how she has done it again, but every time I read it, it is EXACTLY what I need to hear. This was written in a time when she was struggling in her life and it very much focuses on hope. I recommend this book for anyone who is going through a hard time. When I am feeling too down to read it is when I need it most. If I could give this book a million stars I would!!

absolutely love this little book! And its very well made. A neighbor gave me mine. I do read several devotionals each morning, but I read this one right before bed. I love the way its written. As if He was speaking directly to me. He speaks to me, then what He says is quoted with scripture verses. I've ordered several for people in my life. And you can't beat the price. The books showed up in great condition.

Great devotional book. Have been using it for years. My husband got it for me. Hits me right in the heart. Excellent passages to meditate on.

I've sent these books to friends who have been going through some tough times and I always get a great response. I have my own and find the hopeful verses she selected, very uplifting.

I was looking for a book that I could read every single day before work. I was looking for one that could inspire me even if I only read it for 5 minutes each day. WOW!!! I really got my money's worth with this book!!! Every single page is inspiring... So uplifting... Thought provoking... The author makes the scripture so easy to understand and appreciate, then quotes the verses where her inspiration came from. Recommended it to a friend who loves it just as much! Thank you for such a GREAT read!

Awakening to the Spirit World: The Shamanic Path of Direct Revelation

Review

"Awakening to the Spirit World" takes a deep look at tapping sources of invisible power in daily life. So much of what Sandra Ingerman and Hank Wesselman write about is lost to modern medicine: listening to the weather and the elements, understanding death, and more. This is a courageous book that will appeal to all who long to explore the unseen world." --Judith Orloff, MD, author of Emotional Freedom "In an era when chaos, confusion, and uncertainty take center stage, the ancestors, focused on balancing the energies of life, call forth calm, clarity, and pragmatic direction for accessing the medicine needed to heal the individual and collective psyche. In this moment in time, we are invited into 'Awakening the Spirit World,' where we are reassured that we are not alone. We are in good company, indeed." --Malidoma Patrice Some, PhD, author of Of Water and the Spirit, The Healing Wisdom of Africa, and Ritual: Power, Healing, and Community

#39,636 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I really enjoyed this book. The authors advocate finding your own way through "direct revelation". A few years ago I did a 12 month Shaman training called the Medicine Wheel. The teachings are based on the Peruvian Cosmology and at the end of the 12 months I met some interesting people and learned a lot but I never really connected with the teachings. I'm not Peruvian (nor was anyone else) so I always felt strangely disconnected. This book reminded me of all the things I did enjoy; journeying, ritual and connecting with nature. I guess I just needed permission to create my own cosmology. Brilliant! The book is gentle, filled with compassion and well written.

A wonderful compilation of several Shamanic healers in the modern tradition. Their clear viewpoints, though at times divergent, do help diversify the fact the Shamanism has many faces in the modern world and comes from many cultural traditions. It is important for people of European descent to be able to claim that we too have had a lineage of Healers in Europe and the Americas, that were persecuted (burned at the stake as Witches), and that all cultures do have as Hank Wesselman states a "Birthright" to claim Shamanism as part of every culture. This book fleshes out the Spirit Medicine Book nicely (which gives the nuts & bolts/basic structure according to Hank W. of Modern Shamanism). It has excellent journeying exercises to further your practice; because a lot of becoming a Shaman in the modern world is about walking your own path after learning the structures of "the way" and discovering your own path through many, many journeys, journaling and learning about what your symbols mean. It's a self guided tour, really, and the more deft you get at dropping into the relaxed trance state where you can connect with Spirit, the clearer and quicker the communications become, and the stronger the medicine can become.

By far one of my favorite books. Highly recommend and can't even tell you how much everyone needs to read this book. Eye-opening and freeing in so many ways. I hope I can meet the author here in Hawaii and have him sign my book before I leave the island. I already bought another one and gifted it to a close friend.

This is the second book I have read from Sandra Ingerman on the topic of shamanism. The first was actually given to me by a friend who practiced shaman work under a shaman, and felt I "needed" the book. Sandra's books have really opened up the doors to a lot of inner healing for me and have completely transformed my life. I would highly recommend this book to anyone - with any religious or non-religious background. Just keep an open mind!

I read this book cover to cover. I tend to buy books I want to read and it takes a while to get to it. The Universe told me when it was time to start reading it and once I began I couldn't stop. It is filled with information and I love how there were many contributors giving their insight and understanding to the different topics. I appreciated the exercises that were included to help guide you through the ceremony, practices and rituals discussed. I especially like how everything was addressed even how art is incorporated. I just began my shamanic path after an intense calling to it, reading the book helped me understand that I was always being called upon I was too fractured, un-healthy and unaware to really see and feel it. It also help me be less afraid and intimidated by my journeying which gave more control over unintentional journeying. I even began sleeping better after having a better understanding of the connection to my sleep and wake states of consciousness. This coupled with learning more about astral projection taught me the skills to control the vibrational pull I would feel when I would lay down to rest.

This was a very well-choreographed presentation of some important topics and processes that ranged between personal anecdote and suggestions for how to walk this path. The authors were careful to present the concepts in a manner that wouldn't conflict with today's religionist, were said religionist allow self to purview the work. This is spiritual development 101 for a spiritually starved world.

I appreciate Sandra Ingerman's style of writing. This book provides a great deal of information on the topic of shaminism. I have been looking at several authors' point of view regarding the Shamanic path. Everyone I have read have interesting aspects of "the journey" to talk about. But Sandra's perspective is always gentle. She presents shamism in a beautiful way through her writing style. There is a lot of information available regarding this subject and many books duplicate the topic of "the journey," with a slight variation here and there. I have purchased the audio meditation variation of this book and I listen to it often. The audio version does not duplicate the contents of this book, but enhances it. It takes you on "the journey" step by step and each time I listen to it, I gleen something new from the journey. I plan on purchasing more books by this author.

"Awakening to the Spirit World", The Shamanic Path to Direct Revelation by Sandra Ingerman and Hank Wesselman. The first eight chapters - a bit more than half the book - are quite good and very interesting. They focus upon an individuals awakening and working with Shamanism relative to their own personal goals and situations. In the last seven chapters the authors seem to meander in and out of the original "awakening" theme. As they do, they sometimes start to sound (to me) more like used car salesmen than visionaries. My impression is that they simply got farther out on the philosophical/theological limb than they should be. To be fair, someone with more interest in using Shamanism to save the planet (and the energy than I to do it) may well think the second have even better than the first. I want to reiterate that, on an individual, personal level, the first half of the book is really quite good, very logical, very thought-provoking, very informative and likely very useful.

Review

The book is a love song and a philosophical manifesto about the pleasures and frustrations, but mainly the pleasures, of doing math. (Steven Strogatz, New York Times contributor and author of The Joy of X (forthcoming))No matter what mathematical education you had, or didn't have, you will be delighted by this enticing book if you take up Paul Lockhart's invitation to engage in the mathematical sensibility that radiates from its pages, and try your own hand―not only at answering, but even more fruitfully, at formulating questions as you explore the world of mathematics. (Barry Mazur, author of Imagining Numbers (Particularly the Square Root of Minus Fifteen))Lockhart presents math as an art and argues that just as there is no systematic way to create beautiful and meaningful art, there is also no method for producing beautiful and meaningful mathematical arguments. Doing mathematics, according to Lockhart, is to make a discovery (by, say, physical objects like string or rubber bands) and then to explain it in the simplest and most elegant way possible. Using illustrations of various shapes and mathematical formulas, he leads readers through several problems step by step, encouraging them to collaborate with others in working through the problem. Measuring, for example, is relative because it involves comparing the object being measured to another object. Measurement is only one of the many rivers in the "vast, ever-expanding jungle" of mathematics, which for Lockhart satisfies our need to find patterns as well as our curiosity...His playful and ingenious approach not only takes the fear out of math but also elegantly illustrates that universe and the joy he finds in it. (Publishers Weekly 2012-06-15)Lockhart is famous in the math world for a 2002 essay about the state of mathematics teaching. He described it as akin to teaching music by forcing children to transcribe notation without ever touching an instrument or singing. Measurement is his attempt to change the equation: a conversational book about mathematics as an art that invites the reader to join in the fun. Sounding every bit the teacher whose love for his subject is infectious, he guides us through exercises in geometry and calculus--giving information and hints along the way while always encouraging us to ask, and answer, "Why?" Lockhart does not try to make math seem easy; instead he wants his readers to understand that the difficulty brings rewards. (Evelyn Lamb Scientific American 2012-09-01)This invitation to tackle mathematical questions is infused with the joys of the rarefied reality of maths. Paul Lockhart largely avoids complex formulae and the wilder shores of jargon, opting instead for simple geometric drawings, lucid instructions and honest warnings about the hurdles. Covering size, shape, space and time, Lockhart, a maths teacher, gets through scores of problems, from showing that a cone in a hemisphere occupies half the volume to determining the size of the largest circle that can sit at the bottom of a parabola. Elegant, amusing and challenging. (Nature 2012-09-20)Prospective readers should rest assured that while aimed at the nonexpert, Lockhart's writing is sophisticated and mathematically modern...In place of the usual boxed and high-lighted formulas and tricks, Measurement offers questions to be pondered. Lockhart invites readers to trade tutorial fake problems about actual objects, which lead students to abhor school mathematics, for real problems about fantastical objects, which lead mathematicians to love math. (Brie Finegold Science 2012-11-09)This book forced me to use mental muscles I haven't exercised in a long time, but it felt fantastic! Paul Lockhart is a mathematics evangelist; his passion for his subject is evident on every page, in every line. Looking at the subject of Measurement, he takes the reader on a journey that covers geometry, algebra, trigonometry, and on through differential calculus. He has a conversational tone and self-deprecating humor that sets the reader at ease. He understands that many people have been turned off of mathematics. His attitude is playful and joyous...Math is usually taught in such a compartmentalized way that it loses any meaning or coherence, and certainly any sense of wonder or beauty, but Measurement restores the connection. Paul Lockhart feels that math is the most beautiful, abstract and pure art form, and that it is actually fun! By the end of the book, you come to agree with him. (Gretchen Wagner Sacramento Book Review 2012-12-07)There are many books available these days on what mathematicians do, and this is one of the best...Lockhart's approach is fresh and effective. (C. A. Gorini Choice 2013-02-01)

This is a great math book even for people who don't think they are good at math. When I watched the video of this guy talking about the subject I thought I would give it a try. The book is great because the author breaks down the subject into simple concepts that even I could understand. So far I have only read the first chapter. The book discusses the deep philosophical thoughts in math, for example what is a proof?. The first chapter discusses geometry. I recommend this book to any one who want to develop an love for the subject.

Mr. Lockhart has previously written (A Mathematician's Lament) about the joyless methods that were used to teach most of us mathematics. Fortunately I was one who found the joy behind both the practical significance of arithmetic (yes the bank needs to know the exact balance of your account even if you don't care to figure it out) and the memorization of tables; now called math facts (yes, even musicians need to practice scales and train their fingers if they wish to make music, not just appreciate it).If you already know how joyful and remarkable mathematics can be, Mr. Lockhart writes in a way that is easy to read and offers many examples of familiar problems and solves them in a way that emphasizes the elegance and beauty of both the problem and its solution. If you wonder WHY some of us KNOW that mathematics is elegant and beautiful and wish to share that joy, give the book a whirl. You don't need to know more about mathematics than basic arithmetic. As long as you know that algebra and geometry exist; expertise is not required, you will do fine. However as easy as it is to read, be warned that sometimes the mathematics and logic will appear so clearly as if by magic and other times your brain will be challenged and you may struggle mentally as mightily as a women struggles physically (and mentally) to give birth. Whether the struggle is worth it is entirely up to you and fortunately for you, unlike the woman who cannot undo her pregnancy if she finds the struggle to give birth too difficult, you can just give up and read on to the next problem and hope it is easier. There are many, many problems to solve in the book.

I only read the first couple chapters. This book is for when you have time/mental space to devote to study, as a student of the subject. You can do it in small amounts, recreationally, but for the average layperson like myself, this book involves intense mathematical reasoning. I mean, it welcomes everyone! With the same elegance, simplicity and conversational writing that we loved in A Mathematician's Lament. From the first page, you are captivated and wanting more. This is a must-buy for the bookshelf, to have on hand when the mood strikes.

There's a map of how the universe works, and mathematics is the engine that scientists have chosen to generate that map. Lockhart never gets too far from that map, though his examples are often abstract in appearance - at first. I'm going to see that my grand-daughters (who are struggling with math and wondering what it will do for them in a Common Core age) will be exposed (by me, naturally...) to Lockhart's way of explaining how mathematicians do their thing - or at least the ones he claims to know.

The art of mathematics is the real subject of this book--and its treasure. Paul Lockhart reveals that with geometric forms and the numerical relationships to be unlocked in them. He caused me to see the beauty and complexity of the mathematic possibilities--and the perplexity and difficulty he delightfully endures discovering methods and formulas to calculate those relationships. The brain wrenching puzzles he delights in solving are the penchant of a mathematician, and far beyond the simple arithmetic I learned as a teen. But reading about his art now gave me a view of mathematics that I needed then, but was hidden to me, when as a teenager I turned away those subjects intimidated. Had I known about the art of it, I might have ventured into Paul's world of numerical wonders.

A wonderful book! It shows clearly the beauty of mathematics at a quite elementary level. The author goes to great lengths to show what is interesting about Mathematics. It is not the complicated formulae, or the algebra, but great, simple, utterly convincing ideas. If the reader is willing to think hard while reading, he/she will be rewarded by many stunning results presented in a completely straightforward manner. The first part, probably the one that best achieves its stated purpose, deals only with geometry. Since the basics objects of geometry (straight lines, circles, angles...) are familiar to anybody, it is really possible to prove beautiful results without using any of the apparatus, such as algebra and calculus, which many people find difficult. The second part is an attempt to introduce algebra and calculus in a very simple and well motivated way. Since I already know the material quite well, I cannot really say whether the attempt actually succeeds, but I certainly found the presentation very striking and quite engrossing.

Ask Me About My Uterus reads like a murder-mystery being solved by the victim -- it's that gripping and that personal. Abby Norman centers this book on her experience with illness, but is careful to buttress her narrative with science (such as it is with a condition that is not well-studied or understood).I'm always interested to read about how someone overcame hardship or impossible odds and this book delivers a heroine who essentially reads and writes her way out of the darkness. I loved this passage: "The patient who brings in a binder full of PubMed articles should be considered not so much for the specifics of what she has found, but for the fact that she has devoted so much time to the search...the very act of researching, and of supplying the fruits of that quest, is clinically relevant, if only because they are evidence of how the condition has affected the patient's life." Yes! Which made it particularly galling when, at the end of the book, a doctor dismisses the author's research by implying that the roots of her physical ailments lie in her intense love of reading and trying to solve the riddles she is facing. Excuse her for trying to save her own life, please. This book gave me hope that we are entering a new phase of medicine -- one that welcomes empowered, engaged patients who are able to connect online with the resources and peers they need to solve problems.

(I apologize in advance for my rambling review, but this book had such a tremendous impact on me and I'm struggling to find a succinct way of expressing why I think it was such a great and important read.)Abby Norman started experiencing odd symptoms of leg weakness in her teens, and then extreme pain while at college, and despite numerous trips to various medical professionals for both those things, none of the doctors she consulted had any answers for her.The worse that her pain became, the stranger the symptoms, and the longer she suffered, the more the doctors started to dismiss her. It didn't take long for the "it's all in your head" implication to be brought up, simply because Norman's symptoms didn't fit neatly into any diagnosis. And since Norman had a tumultuous childhood (emancipated from her parents at a fairly young age), was highly intelligent (managed to graduate from high school and get a full scholarship to Sarah Lawrence), not passive (very invested in finding relief for her suffering), and actually had experience in the medical field (after she left college, she worked in medical documentation in a hospital), doctors latched on to the "female hysteria" model of Days or Yore and basically tagged her with that diagnosis and kept trying to send her on her way.I could relate so much to this book because my story is the *opposite* of Norman's- I was born with Spina Bifida, and in my 43 years have experienced everything from muscle weakness to bone deterioration to depression to nerve pain to various issues with "lady business", etc and my whole body has always been this weird mish-mash of symptoms, subject to radically shift at any time, but because I had the blessing of a very firm diagnosis when I was born, I have been able to navigate everything health-related with the peace of mind that comes with knowing *why* it's happening. Most everything I have experienced can be basically stepped down from diagnosis to diagnosis back to Spina Bifida. And Spina Bifida is not a simple disease- no two patients experience it the same way and it affects multiple systems in various ways. But reading this book made me realize that a diagnosis- even a very complex one- can be a gift simply because doctors *believe* you.So, coming from my own experience, I can't imagine how devastating it must be to experience everything from extreme pain, nausea, dizziness, muscle weakness, nerve issues, etc., to NOT know what the heck is causing all of it, to live in a constant state of fear that your body is basically failing and might not be able to be healed, and then to have the doctors say "you're not actually experiencing any of it- you're too high strung. Try and relax and it'll get better" ... I have friends who have struggled with various "mystery diseases" so I was aware that the medical establishment can really not serve everyone, but this book made me realize that it's a lot more widespread than I realize. The idea that people are going through this experience on a regular basis is just heart breaking and also so very frustrating. I never realized before reading this book what a gift a firm diagnosis can be- all I have to do is walk into most any medical establishment and say "Spina Bifida" and I am taken seriously and whatever I am experiencing is given consideration. I can't imagine experiencing what I have experienced and trying to get help and having someone say "that numbness in your foot? It's all due to emotional stress. If you chill out, it should go away. Good luck with that."Another reason I related to this book is because Norman really shares what it's like to live long-term with a chronic health problem- you have to basically tailor your entire life, every detail of it, to preventative care. Other people don't understand why it's so important to do it, but to maintain any semblance of sanity or general "okayness"- today and in the future-, you basically have to serve your own health before anything else. It was such a relief to finally read someone else's experience with this. Anyone with a rather complex set of health problems knows that we can't just jump out of bed, put on our shoes, and walk out into the sunshine And we get a lot of flack for it from people who don't really get what it's like- we get flack for not being able to make a lot of plans, for not being able to travel a lot, for choosing to stay home and take care of ourselves rather than just throwing up our arms and going out and embracing life. If we don't take care of ourselves, we don't *get* life. It's not that we choose to be this way- the fact is we don't *have* a choice. If we blow off our routines, if we take even a day off from all the preventative things we do, sometimes the cost can be weeks in the hospital or permanent damage. So having Norman say "this is how I live, and how I make my life work, and that's that" was very refreshing for me. It made me realize that a lot more of us are doing this than I thought. So this book was eye-opening, enraging, heart-breaking, empowering, and ... well, it was astonishing to me. I highly recommend it to everyone whether you have health problems or not. This isn't about health or medicine, it's about what it's like to be human in a less-than-perfect body. And whether or not a person experiences a health problem early in life health issues of some sort are almost inevitable down the line, given the way in which the human body ages and begins to break down. Very few people escape their life unscathed in some way and I think a lot of us, even with complex medical problems, take for granted that if we fall ill, at the very least a doctor will be able to find the source of that problem and offer a treatment. But now I realize that's not always the case.I'm sorry for this terribly rambling review, but this book really impacted me.

“Hi, I’m Abby Norman. I am not a doctor — but I might have been.” That is not how Abby begins her book — that introduction does not show up until Chapter 7, when she uses it for a presentation she is making to an endometriosis conference — but it should begin any discussion of Abby Norman’s book, because you need to understand that Abby has a brilliant mind that should have been in use for the medical benefit of humanity. Instead she has spent her entire adult life — and she is not yet thirty — fighting the medical establishment to prove that she is not a hypochondriac, nor a hysteric, nor a fanciful delusional woman who likes to read medical descriptions online. She is a young woman who is very sick, and would like doctors to fix her. Or if they can’t fix her, correctly diagnose her condition. Or if they cannot diagnose her, at least shut up and listen to what she has to say about her own symptoms, and what she’s learned about the disease that’s killing her.Ask Me About My Uterus (AMAMU) is not precisely a page-turner, but it drew me in and got me hooked. I bought Abby’s book in hardcover, so to save weight I did not bring it on a trip. At the airport, I bought the electronic version for iBooks, because I didn’t want to wait three days to finish it.This will not be a comfortable read for many men, and some women. Abby’s descriptions of her conditions and treatments are graphic (albeit smoothed with self-deprecating humor) and concern the “icky parts” of a woman’s system. [Suggestion for men who get uncomfortable hearing about “women’s problem” — get over yourselves. Half the people on the planet are female, so learn what most of them go through on a monthly basis. If you’re heterosexual, your partner could use some support. If you’re gay, your mother or female friends need occasional empathy. If you’re an orphaned monk in a remote monastery, get off the Internet before I tattle to your abbot.]Many people, when they get close to the end of their life, feel a need to leave a legacy, or a remembrance, or some token that they made a difference in this world. Abby Norman is a woman in her 20s who is learning as much about the disease of endometriosis as she can so that she can leave behind something that others can build on; so that she can help advance knowledge about a “woman’s disease” that has been noted but mostly ignored for centuries simply because it is a “woman’s disease” (although, it turns out, it actually isn’t; it’s just more rare and manifests differently in males—see Chapter 6).AMAMU follows different tracks and timelines, switching between the personal and the clinical. The Prologue is almost a teaser, as Abby tells us about a very bad day when she was in college, with physical symptoms she had never experienced before and didn’t understand. From there she takes us through the history of medicine (spoiler: a lot of things we think we know about the human body were not actually researched as well as we’ve been lead to believe); through her personal history (God, if You’re reading this, a child who has been through what Abby lived through when she was growing up should not have had to endure what she encountered as an adult — just a comment from a customer); into her determination that she has endometriosis, and her struggle with the medical establishment to get them to take action.Abby is dying. Of course, everyone is dying, but Abby is going a little bit faster some days than most of us are. Is her book self-pitying? No, although she mentions days she feels sorry for herself. Is her book sad? How could a book about a brilliant young woman who is condemned to soul-crushing pain and loss of career and collection agencies hounding her for hospital bills she will never, ever be able to pay… how could a book like that NOT be sad? And yet it isn’t. I hesitate to use the word “inspiring,” because it’s gotten trite, but “informative” would be an understatement. Ask Me About My Uterus has made me glad that people like Abby Norman are in the world.

Review

Get inspired to meet any fitness challenge with Mina Samuels’s new book, Run Like a Girl, a chicken soup for the athlete’s soul. Its interviews with hundreds of women will fire your desire to reach personal bests in all areas of life.—SELF, March, 2011A well-rounded investigation into the profound impact of sports on women of all ages and walks of life.Samuels (The Queen of Cups, 2006) may celebrate the successes of professional female athletes who have thrived in a traditionally male-dominated arena, but her main focus is on the ordinary women who have achieved enlightenment through sports. The author illustrates the theme of sports as a metaphor for life, and is herself a testimony to this concept. Samuels credits her own discovery of distance running at 27 as the catalyst for her transformation from attorney and human-rights defender to writer and sports advocate. She suggests that women who approach life from an athlete's perspective are better equipped to find balance and harmony and are more courageous in the face of challenges than those who do not. She argues that the stamina and endurance built up by athletes is good practice for the resilience needed to persevere when they stumble off the pitch. The book is built on lighthearted accounts of women who become comically engrossed in their sport as well as uplifting tales of women who have overcome life-altering trauma. Samuels’ anecdotes may at times seem redundant or excessive in quantity, but they are neatly interwoven with background information on the female athlete’s plight from a political, psychological and social standpoint. As such, they serve a purposeful, rather than ornamental, function. An enthusiastic tribute to women who replace the stigma attached to the term running like a girl with a sense of power and honor.—Kirkus Reviews March, 2011There are lots of good sports books, but rarely beautifully-written ones. CAUTION: This book may cause intense feelings of inspiration, increased motivation, and can lead to a runner's high. This is one of those books you read and think, "Oh my god, me too!" Reading about women that could easily be your sister, neighbor, or friend and their extraordinary accomplishments is invigorating. I used to think I was the only one tuned into "Radio KFUQD," but the vignettes in this book illustrate that self-doubt is not only common, it's beatable. You will feel like you can conquer the world when you read this.

I really can't say enough about this book. As someone who was un-athletic in her youth and dicovered the joy of running and general gym-going in the past few years (late 20s), I feel confident stating that this is a book for everyone - athletes, non-athletes, sort-of-athletes, you get the picture. I was worried that like many books in this genre, it would be a poorly-written, juvenile, kind of cheesy read. My fears were so unfounded - the writing and the message are both well-developed, nuanced, and leave the reader wanting more.I can't really do justice to this book through a review, but I think the fact that I'm considering buying about a dozen copies to give as gifts to some amazing (both athletic and non-athletic) women in my life says it all. The strength and confidence that I've found through reading this book has really caught me by surprise, especially since I didn't know I was missing any of that strength or confidence.

Reading this book puts me to sleep, not inspirational

Given the choice between exercise and cocktails after a long day, I've always opted for the latter. As I get older and fitness becomes more important, I've been looking for ways to incorporate exercise into my busy schedule. I even dabbled in a triathlon for the first time last year to give me a kick start to building a routine. Even then, I've been a weekend athlete at best.Reading Run Like a Girl has lit a fire under my derriere! The book is full of insights and inspiration from the author and from the women she introduces in the book (go girls!). While there's a heroic aspect to all of them, each is just a "girl next door" making this book accessible and enjoyable for anyone. In addition to a few practical tips that I will put to use right away, I have the stories and images of the women in my head to access when I need them to cheer me on if training gets tough...or I can't get myself off the couch! I've already bought a couple of copies for friends who could use a gentle nugde towards fitness.

I bought 3 copies of this book after seeing the author on the Today Show. I bought one for me, one for my daughter and one for my neice - to share with her mother, my sister. I've really enjoyed the principles laid out and think they apply for lots of parts of life, not just athletics. Balance is always a struggle and the author does a good job of presenting this idea in all activities. I think it will be especially useful to my 27 year old daughter. One caution: after reading the book I am hesitant to send it to my socially and politically very conservative neice and her mom. My sister is easily offended by views and language that are more liberal in nature than she is. I would take this into consideration if you are buying the book for a gift.

This book has inspired me to get into running. I am 56 years old, overweight, out of shape and haven't run since high school, and even back then, I only did what I had to do. Running a 5K is now on my bucket list. I signed up for one and am in the process of training 3 days a week now. It's not been easy, but I am making progress every single week. Thanks to this book, I am doing something I never believed I would or could do.

I had read QUEEN OF CUPS by the same author and loved it, especially its surprising conclusion. Frankly, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed RUN LIKE A GIRL since mehinks I am not a member of the target audience. It is an important and inspirational work and it resonates in the same way HOPE IS A MUSCLE does. This is my new gift for young women as they graduate from high school, college or when they seem a bit lost.

In less than two months, I have a 1/2 marathon to run. Rain, sickness and a busy schedule have left me feeling low and wary of this upcoming run. "Run Like a Girl" is the perfect read for me right now. It is inspiring and gets me up and out on those runs. It is nice to hear stories I can relate to and feel inspired by. So glad I bought this book at a crucial time for me.
