While my (advanced) reading kindergartener "can" read this on his own, we make it a family affair! The Bird & Squirrel books are HILARIOUS! The sound effects in these books are what got my little guy reading in the first place. What kid doesn't want to sound out "BONK!" and "Zooooooooooom!"?? The graphics are bright and appealing, and we find ourselves belly laughing as a family. Thank you for writing a FUN, CLEAN, and well written graphic series for our little guy! Please keep writing! We can't get enough! I know that our son's Bird & Squirrel series will be a set that sits on the shelves in our home (or his) forever. It's what he grabs when riding in the car, sitting at the table eating breakfast, or curled up on the couch. The. Best.

It's my mission in life to be more like Bird! Get it for any kid 4 years old through 5th grade! I find it hilarious as a mom and teacher!!

We've been waiting for a new Bird and Squirrel for a long time and this one was as great as all the others!

{My thoughts} – So much adventure and so many things to be scared about. Red is Squirrel’s wife. We met her in the last book. At the end of the last book we were introduced to their daughter Birdie. Yes, she is named after Bird.Red has to make a delivery that will keep her gone for a couple of days. Squirrel is left home to take care of their daughter. Bird visits and gets Birdie all excited about going on an adventure to find Bigfeet. This is after Squirrel had already told his daughter they were going to stay inside.They do go on an adventure to look for Bigfeet, but they don’t exactly find him or her. They do find all kinds of other things that are fun, but Squirrel is so scared of everything that he attempts to push those fears on everyone around him. It’s one of those interesting concepts when you really think about it. Push the fear on another, get them to believe it and not be afraid of things alone. The only problem is that Bird and Birdie aren’t really afraid of anything.I really liked this book. It showed so many great friendship type things. It also showed the relationship between a father and daughter. The relationship between n uncle and niece. I enjoy when things unravel and a lot has unraveled in this series. I wouldn’t have imagined the author was going to bring it to where it is now, but I absolutely love that he did. This has been a really fun series to read and I hope there will be more books added to it in the future.

This is a fantastic book. While it is especially valuable for beginners and first year sales reps, it has value for anybody in the profession. As an experienced sales professional myself, I will say that this won't teach a seasoned sales veteran any new information about HOW to sell, but it will help to realign your thoughts with WHY they buy. Huge difference there that we sometimes become jaded to after many years in the business. We get so focused on saying things we like to say, but disregard the things that the customer needs to hear. This book will also help the seasoned veteran to get back to the positive outlook and remember why they started selling to begin with. Sales is truly the best profession in the world, nothing will give you the satisfaction like a successful selling career. I wholeheartedly believe that ANYBODY in sales, regardless of skill level or experience would benefit from reading this book.

Below are key excerpts from the book that I found particularly insightful:1- "If, in your heart, you really feel the sales process is something you do t0 the prospect, then you are a manipulator. The dictionary defines manipulate: "To control the action of, by management; also, to manage artfully or fraudulently. Manipulation: Skillful or dexterous management, sometimes for purpose of fraud, state of being manipulated." I'll be the first to admit that manipulators make sales, but in my thirty-six years in the profession I have never known even one manipulator who was successful in the profession. If, in your heart, you feel the sales process is something you do for the prospect, then this book could represent a significant addition to your sales library. Your benefits will be considerable because you are truly interested in benefiting others."2- "You've got to establish that trust and respect with your prospects if you expect to be a sales professional. This should be obvious. but for fear it's not, I'll spell it out. Again, you cannot be one kind of person and another kind of salesperson. You must be consistent in all areas of life if you are going to achieve maximum results in building your sales career. That's one of the major reasons we deal with the entire person rather than just the salesperson throughout this book. This is one of the "not-so-little" things that make the buying difference in the prospect's mind."3- "People forget price but they'll never forget poor quality or a poor choice. They generally give the salesperson a generous portion of the blame. Some of that goes with the territory, but too much blame means you won't have the territory for long."4- "High performers in the world of selling establish trust with customers by one-on-one, eye-to-eye communication skills. They maintain n trust by personally assuming responsibility for completing the sale, which means servicing the account on an ongoing basis and utilizing their company support people in the most effective manner. High performers demonstrated great integrity with their follow-through and belief that the sale is not complete until the product is installed and functioning satisfactorily."5- "The critical step: in the world of selling is this step of honesty which is your total conviction, your complete belief that the product or service you sell is the best buy for the prospect."6- "Sympathy means you feel like another person feels. Empathy means you understand how the other person feels, though you do not feel the same way...To be truly professional you must be able to comfortably move from the seller's side of the table to the buyer's side. If you know how your prospect thinks and feels, you're definitely going to sell more of what you're selling because you will communicate more effectively."7- "One myth—that a salesperson should not get involved with customer concerns other than the purpose of the sales call—was exploded, as was the concept that price isn't important and that you should "promise them anything" to close a sale. Customers want and expect heir salespeople to be able to act as trustworthy resources who respond directly and provide them expertise, backed by effective recommendations. One significant characteristic of the high producer is his willingness to explain product drawbacks."8- " H in the heart of your sales career is honesty, E is ego and empathy, A is your attitude toward you your prospects and profession, R is for physical, mental, and spiritual reserve, T is for tough—and the toughest thing is love"9- "When the inner man speaks, the I not speak from the heart unless he truly believes in his product and/or service. This means that he must have paid the price by obtaining profound knowledge of his product or service. One must also believe this product/service is unquestionably what the customer/patient needs."10- "Almost without exception, every product or service can be sold by painting word pictures, especially if the pictures are in the present tense. As I've previously stated, we think in pictures and we buy pictures if we are painted into the picture as satisfied customers."11- "It's better to have the no today than tomorrow for the simple reason it clears your mind. You can now pursue new prospects and not count on that one for a future sale. Once you do, you fall into the trap of not prospecting for new prospects and the sale you miss today will cost you sales tomorrow."12- "There is one specific point, however, when I throw in the towel and withdraw my efforts to close. That point is when the prospect makes it clear—after seeing the benefits—that he has no interest and cannot or will not buy. Until that point, however, I am going to make an honest effort to close the sale."13- "I deal with and use questions in every segment of Secrets of Closing the Sale. There is no doubt in my mind that your career as a salesperson will move forward faster as a direct result of learning how to ask questions and how to use the proper voice inflection than from any other skills you might develop."14- "To build a sales career, you need to acquire the knowledge made available through sales trainers, books, recordings, and seminars. With that knowledge you should weave in a poetic philosophy of life which says that "you can get everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want." To the knowledge and poetic philosophy, add the common sense of the old farmer which says, "Friend, I don't care what you do, know you've got to work and work hard at seeing new prospects and servicing old customers." You have a moral obligation to work so hard at building your sales career and becoming truly professional that as my friend John Nevin from Australia says, "If anyone ever sees you coming and says, 'Here comes a salesman,' you won't let him down.'"

I strongly believe this book can make most people a better salesperson, especially the ones that, like me, was not born a salesperson. The book expects that you represent a company you believe in and that you assume the customer far better off with your products than without.A long list of closing tactics are revealed, which gives the trainee a palette of options to choose from when we are out spreading the word, helping others to our goods and services. If only we could bring the book to meetings…More important than the closing tips are the thoroughly discussed key principles of sales, which are also listed at the end. This gives the reader a throughout understanding of the trade - and for what to practice. From my understanding of the field, the most central here is to be enthusiastic about the products, ask questions, listen and be sincere towards the prospect.The biggest obstacle to the book is its length and that it seems somewhat repeating at times. This repetition might be a useful learning exercise, but had the book been shorter I would rather have read it twice. There is also quite frequent references to religious topics which might be partially relevant but which in my opinion does not belong in the book. At the end, increased use of parenthesis are cluttering the text and the writing ends up a somewhat clumsy.

I ordered this book on 1 April 2016. Because of work (non-sales) and other obligations, I recently finished reading the book.I bought the original book I wanted pure advice without revisions. The book is an amazing read. I look forward to my 2nd and 3rd reviews. Do not feel like you have to rush through this book. Although the advice is given through narrative, it is first and foremost a reference book. Place it on your bookshelf next to How to Get Rich: One of the World's Greatest Entrepreneurs Shares His Secrets.

I have never left a negative review before, but after days of thinking it over, I feel that I must. The description of the book was well written, which is what swayed me to purchase this book rather than the other fertility books I was considering. That was the best part of the book. The grammar is extremely poor, causing me to wonder if someone other than the author edited it before publishing. There are no sources cited—“a report says” or “a doctor said” is the extent of citing sources. I honestly had a difficult time reading the book and eventually just thumbed through the last 20 or 30 pages. Also, there was no information on the author. There was no “About the Author” anywhere in the book. Who is Anna C. Brooke and why did she decide to write this book? That is information that gives the author credibility to the reader.If the author revised the book, after having an editor go through it with a fine-toothed comb, and cited sources, this book would be worth reading.

The first two books in this series were very good - five stars each. This book, however, was way longer than it should have been, and much less satisfying.In the first book, the hero (Darrow) does the unthinkable, rising from his lowest-caste status as a Red to the top shelf Gold. In the second book he meets people and wreaks havoc with the Society, which he aims to destroy. This book is very different from the others. It follows Darrow as he builds an army of loyalists and ships, and meets new and old people, some friendly, some not. At the beginning he finds himself imprisoned by his one-time (and some-time) friends, and as the book progresses he recruits allies to his cause. Along the way he runs repeatedly into enemies who have betrayed him over and over. Finally, at the very end, he seems to win, but suddenly loses, yet somehow emerges victorious.I think the story could be good, and it sort of wraps up what the hero set out to do in the first book, although with voluminous loose ends. (I assume books four through six will get the situation straightened out.) But all throughout there is so much unbelievable crap, like in a bad super spy thriller. People get cut to shreds yet suddenly win the fight. People do things that should get them killed, but amazingly live to fight again. (I REALLY got tired of 'Aja' popping up everywhere.) Darrow keeps trusting people he knows he shouldn't, and keeps paying the price. Attacks overcome unbelievable odds only to be stymied by some inconsistent little detail.As in the previous book, Darrow keeps falling into apparently unwinnable situations but magically gets away. The worst of these episodes comes at the end of the book, when he attains a major victory over a main enemy. The author leads us to believe that the situation goes south, the good guys die, and the annoyingly recurrent, really bad people are seconds from victory. He even tells us what Darrow is thinking about - how he messed up and lost the war. Except that's not what Darrow is thinking. He does something unforeseen and saves the day. We actually get lied to. Surprises and strange turns are what make books good, but to be jerked around like this doesn't make readers happy. It seems like the ending was given a lot of twists, turns, and action to revive an otherwise slow moving sequel to the first two books, but really it just misleads and annoys the reader. After this treatment, it think it will be a long while before I consider starting book four.I am not a fan of run-on sentences. They can be used to great effect in the right situations, but this book is fraught with them, to the point that you find yourself tripping over the writing itself, wondering if you missed something. It's irritating, and worse than in the previous books.And finally, the author should really learn the difference between "till" and "until". It's not that difficult.Did I like this book? Not especially. I had to read it because it was the next in the series. Will I read the next one? I don't know.

POILERS ARE POSSIBLE. PROCEED WITH CAUTION.This book was the best conclusion I could have hoped for in regards to this series. My heart broke over and over (as per the norm for Pierce Brown), and then at the end it was put back together again. I am so in love with this series, I’ve been recommending it to everyone.I’m not sure if I mentioned it before or not, but I started this series on a couple of my friends’ recommendations. They told me just enough to keep me hooked, but also just enough to make me terrified to finish the book. I’m so glad they got me started on it, though. This review, as much as I would like for it to be only about Morning Star, is probably going to focus more on the series as whole. I can’t write a full review without spoiling everything.Brown’s world is one of the most complex I’ve ever seen; from the caste system down to each relationship that Darrow has with the other characters. Every one of the characters is so dynamic, you can’t help but love every single one of them, even when a few betray Darrow.Let’s talk about Darrow for a second. He is flawed, but his flaws are what make him such a good character. He tries to be noble and honorable, but he is selfish and cocky and he has a bad habit of betraying his friends. Darrow is not really a character that we fall in love with, despite everyone around him falling in love with him. We do, however, fall in love with his story and his world. It’s full of awful, terrible things, but it’s world where humans have pioneered into space. It’s a world with crazy technological advancements and the ability to create in ways that we cannot yet create. But, it’s broken, so we want to see it fixed.I loved seeing Darrow’s transformation. I especially enjoy how his view of Eo changes over the course of the books. In the beginning, she’s perfection in his eyes. He spends the whole of Red Rising mourning her, but by the time we hit Golden Son Darrow starts to realize that his life with Eo wasn’t everything he thought it was. By the end of Morning Star, it’s plain to Darrow that he’s fighting for Eo’s dream, but not really for Eo anymore. Of course he still mourns her death, as he likely always will, but he realizes there’s more to his fight.Though Darrow is our MC, Sevro is my favorite character. He’s obnoxious, brilliant, and disgusting. He’s comic relief to the extreme, Darrow’s foil, and an overall fantastic character. He’s described as short and ugly, callsign Goblin. He hates it, but in the end he finds love. He’s still a sarcastic, foul-mouthed, little creature, but he’s one of the best characters in the entire series.Virginia au Augustus (Mustang) is also very brilliant, beautiful of course, but I also enjoy how much of a BOSS she is. She had me a little scared at the end of Golden Son, but she worked her way back into my good graces as Morning Star progressed.Victra au Julii’s overt sexuality was at first irritating (I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to like her character), but ended up being charming. She flirts unabashedly with just about everything that moves. But, she is also awesome, and things take an unexpected turn for her in the love department. It was great.Then there’s Ragnar. Sweet, giant, warrior Ragnar. Scary to look at. Scary to watch in battle. Loves kids. And I love him.The Telemanuses are loveable as well. Also giant. Also scary to watch in battle. Kevax has a fox that he loves as much as his own children. It really doesn’t get any better than that.Cassius au Bellona. Oh, Cassius.Roque au Fabii. I can’t even. I loved him even through everything.Those are just the characters I like. The villains, are all terrifying. Octavia, the Sovereign, is cunning. She has ruled the Society for 60 years, beheading her own father to take his throne. She has captured Darrow multiple times, and even though he’s escaped her, she’s not keen to let him go again.Aja, The Protean Knight and one of three Furies that protect the Sovereign. She’s fierce, a fighter with no rival, the best student of her teacher, Lorn au Arcos (the best Olympic Knight there ever was). She is truly fearsome. I wouldn’t want to be her prey.Adrius (The Jackal), Mustang’s twin, absolutely scares me. A sociopath with fighting skill, he manipulates his way around the politics of the Society, building a following of Golds and lowColors to use as he pleases. He is always a step ahead of Darrow. Speaking of, I want to share a thought that my friend Mary brought to my attention; a thought that I believe is brilliant. She had suggested one change for this series, one change I never would have thought of, but would have been great. She thinks the Jackal should have been a woman. Sit with that for a moment, and think. It’s common for the most vile of villains to be a man, but imagine if Adrius was a woman; how completely terrifying would she have been? Imagine, the face of the woman Darrow loves on his most formidable enemy; all of the horrors from Darrow forcing her to cut off her own hand, to the destruction at the end of Morning Star. Adrius’ withdrawal from Mustang after their mother left, ordering the death of her older brother. Imagine. She would have been more dreadful than any other person in this series. Mary’s right, it would have made the book that much better.These books overall were just phenomenal. I’m sad that it’s over, but I hear there’s going to be a spinoff novel, and that makes me happy again. Literally everyone needs to read these.

This book Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life and Crucial Conversations Tools for Talking When Stakes Are High, Second Edition are essentials and the best books on communication I've read.This one (Taking the War Out of Our Words) is less reviewed but it's my favorite out of the three. This book gives A LOT of information. I personally believe that anyone who has trouble "taking things personally" would GREATLY benefit. Why? Because not only do you learn the Six traditional warlike approaches in communication BUT you also see how people poorly format their words in a way that their words are offensive. Will this solve your problem of taking things personally? Maybe not (that's a decision and determined path you have to choose for yourself) but this book is a really good start to see how language and your emotions have been preventing you from seeking the happiness and resolve you desire.After you're done finding out what's wrong with language, you learn how to use it correctly. I especially enjoyed the breakdowns of statements, questions and predictions and HOW TO USE THEM (wish I could increase font size more). Unfortunately, with most brilliant systems and ideas, I feel sad that most people will read the first section of the book, label someone a counter-attacker and never seek resolve.You won't be a master of communication after reading the book, but you will know what you said wrong or they said wrong after an disagreement. For those who read all the way to the end, study and try to apply this as much they can everyday only good things will come.My life is significantly better and I have been self-aware enough to disable many rough situations from happening after reading this book plus the two others I've listed.

This is an excellent book for learning how to help find consensus in difficult situations. The first part of the book explains what we usually do when we come into conflict with other people, and usually with less-than-desired results. The second part of the book explains different techniques to use to help the other side not be put on the defensive so that real communication takes place.I have used these techniques when I teach my students, dealing with co-workers, even when talking about internal issues with family members. In the past, any discussion would end up in a shouting match and someone would always get their feelings hurt. Now, I use the techniques in this book and we all have real dialogue -- not just a bunch of monologues.I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone who is interested in conflict resolution.

This book is not a quick read. It is a thoughtful read that must be read as if it is a text book. I am not saying that it is difficult to read. It is not. For me at least, I am having to unlearn decades of personal interaction and communications reflexes that were ingrained in my thought process from my earliest days. I don't have to be combative and confrontational. I can learn to be a better communicator.

I keep "Taking the War Out of Our Words" nearby. Sharon Strand Ellison does a comprehensive job of breaking down our communication to its most basic forms and then does a masterful job of building practical techniques to make communication non-defensive and, dare I say--kinder and gentler. It takes practice--likely a lifetime commitment -- to break some of our most "war-like" default habits of communication. Ellison also is very clear about how to ensure healthy boundaries when things get out of hand. The main point is to make communication better between you and the people you interact with everyday. There is a completely selfish reason to take this work on--your life will improve. I highly recommend this book to anyone serious about practicing good communication.

It takes some doing to really learn the approach to negotiation that this book outlines. You'll need to study and practice, since it requires a new way of thinking about interactions with others. The techniques outlined are very powerful. Highly recommend this book to anyone who is frequently in negotiations of some kind. But practice, practice, practice!

This is an excellent book. I am a member of the Collaborative Family Law Association of St. Louis. We chose this book to use for a study group to help us talk more effectively in our team approach in helping people divorce in a non-adversarial way. It has been a great help to us in organizing our thoughts on how to communicate in a non-defensive manner. Take your time to read it and digest it as it takes a couple of pass through readings to really understand it. I love the summaries at the end of each chapter. Start with those to get the overview and then the chapter will make more sense on the first read. Then use what she suggests for a more peaceful world.
