All the financial/investing books I've read urge readers to enlist the services of a "certified financial planner." That may, or may not, be helpful; all financial advisors will assume that you wish to be heavily invested in the market. The average fee charged by these experts is around 1% of the assets they manage for a client. But, that's not the end of it: there will usually be other fees such as those for 3rd party managers, custodial fees, possibly sales fees, etc. Given the way the market goes up and down, gains can be quickly lost and may not amount to much more than 4 or 5% a year net, even with tax managed funds. When you subtract the advisor's fee, plus other miscellaneous fees, a person might do better to put their money in CDs, even at today's paltry rate of return. (Although, a 3.25% 10 year CD is available at Cit Bank as of this writing.) So, it is entirely possible than I could hire a CFP and pay him/her to lose money for me. I can do that quite nicely without paying someone else for the privilege! That being said, there is some good information in this book regarding asset allocation, diversifying your investments, recommended percentages to invest in each asset class, etc. He even refines it into subgroups of investments, i.e. value stocks vs. growth stocks; foreign investments vs. U.S., and how they tend to move in opposite directions. The author also imparts useful information on how different types of stocks/bonds tend to behave under various market conditions. All in all, this book is more informative than most others I've read.

It is geared towards people who are already retired, or who are planning to retire in the near future, and provides a systematic approach on the best ways to invest your money. He cover topics like how to invest for income, why common investment strategies often fail, and how to assess your personal financial situation. Thurman also breaks down the three main types of investments, explains how equity investments are important for long-term retirement income, and describes different investing styles.Though I am years away from retirement, I found this information to be extremely useful and it helped me to revise the way I think about saving for retirement. I also appreciated all the practical information Thurman provides, such as steps you can take to ensure you have income for life, how to know if you need a financial advisor and the questions you need to ask before you hire one. He also gives some valuable resources at the end of the book, when he answers the most common questions about retirement portfolios and gives eight recommendations for further reading.For anyone of retirement age or planning to retire, this book is definitely a must-read. I also feel that even people who are years away from retiring can really benefit from it as well.

The author Randy Thurman takes much effort to help the readers make the perfect retirement portfolio for themselves. The book is targeted towards new retirees and people who are planning to take a retirement in the next few years because it is based on the current financial market. The author guides the readers in many ways to plan their portfolio such as asking some relevant questions and the type of portfolio that they want. The author strives clarity by giving live examples of his conversation with his clients. The only negative thing about the book was that the introduction was a bit long and the author could have made the book shorter. Still it is a well researched book and highly informative.
I guess I’ve never actually thought of how important is to have a long-term perspective of where I put my money into, but the more time passes by, the better I understand that there is no better time than now to start doing the work. Only planning just won’t do the trick! Since the promise of a solution that works regardless of the economic climate you find yourself into is mentioned in several chapters of this book, I guess this author understands something about people’s psychology around money! He is very right about more than one thing - the fact that we live longer and that retirement as a “cost of living only†solution is not enough; the various investment styles and the right questions to ask to pick the right financial advisor. Since the latter would be the preferred option for many, that only makes the book worthwhile. There are people’s stories that might just resemble yours. There are example portfolios and explanation on how finances in the world work now, and how to keep an eye on thriving and growing economies. Carefully chosen data about financial associations and regulations are also a great lesson for your portfolio. In one sentence, after you close this book, you can say that you are financially confident and literate enough to start a good plan and keep going without catastrophic mistakes.
