A superbly told tale of the life and death of one of baseball's all-time greats. If you thought you'd heard everything there is to know about this powerful yet gentle man, grab a copy of this book and start reading. From Lou's early family life, through high school and then into baseball at Columbia and finally the Yankees, Gehrig's story is compelling, star-studded and wonderfully presented. His tragic battle with ALS, still at an age where he could easily have rewritten baseball's record book, unfolds in heartbreaking detail. Through it all, we see what an amazing soul Gehrig was, and how his understated lifestyle compared with most of the ballplayers of yesterday and today set him apart. Jonathan Eig's treatment of this amazing story makes this a biography for the ages. Again, no matter how much you thought you knew about Lou Gehrig, even after seeing the Gary Cooper film about his life, you'll enjoy and learn from this fine book.

This is a terrifically well researched and well written biography. Especially the way the author has corrected various previously published accounts of Lou Gehrig's life and times. The reader is drawn in to Lou's psyche exceptionally deep; his interaction with his teammates, for example, including and especially Babe Ruth. And the author knows baseball too, and understands the situations where a double or home run is just another home run (like where your team is already up ten runs in the eighth inning), and where it's a game changer.The included photos don't display on the Kindle as well as a reader would like, as you already know.I highly recommend this book. I've read several biographies of Gehrig which don't do much more than recite his baseball career.Did you know that there is actually no recording of Lou's final farewell speech? But the author was able to painstakingly piece together what Lou actually said by reviewing what the dozens of reporters wrote afterwards. The stadium, including the press box, was dead silent as Lou spoke. No one thought to record the speech.

This book is many things. I came to it knowing almost nothing about Lou Gehrig other The the iconic facts. Obviously I knew his fate before starting the book, but the author’s ability to describe his life and times put that into the background until toward the end. Then the haunting knowledge of what was to come seeped in. I wanted to believe “50-50” along with Lou.It is a heartbreaking story in many ways but it is poignant, uplifting, fun, heartwarming, historically interesting, and much more. Thank you Jonathan Eig for allowing me to get to know this outstanding person.

When Amazon emailed me about this book as a daily deal, I realized that I didn't know anything about Lou Gehrig except that he was one of the Yankee superstars and that he died of Lou Gehrig's disease. So, I gave it a try and I'm glad that I did.This is such a well written book that I felt as though it were the story of a dear friend and his death. I cared about him in a way I didn't expect. For example. during the time before he got married, when, according to the author, Gehrig wanted to meet women but was so shy he couldn't get up the nerve to talk to them, I wanted to grab him and introduce him to my single friends. I liked Lou a lot.I've always felt put off by Babe Ruth, he was just too drunk, too much of a womanizer, too much of a glutton for me to care much about him. But in this book, I even started to see the caring side of Ruth and actually ended up liking him a bit. A totally unexpected result of reading this book.Some reviewers seem to feel that there is too much about ALS and not enough about baseball. I would have liked more about ALS and less play-by-play, but that's a hard call to make and I think the author did a good job keeping a middle course.I am not giving this 5 stars because of the formatting errors/typos on the Kindle edition. In many places a long quote starts correctly indented than becomes unindented making you have to really work at figuring out what is a quote and what isn't. Towards the end I was so moved that I was crying, then i'd hit one of these "is this a quote or what" places and get annoyed. Maybe that was good because it stopped my crying, but ...

Public-facing writing about millennials is plentiful and varied: "Millennials are selfish;" "Millennials are tech wizards/start-up geniuses/egregiously wealthy;" "Millennials aren't politically engaged;" "Millennials are post-race and possess fewer biases than previous generations." However, rarely are millennials disaggregated along axes of social difference. Moreover, many observations attributed to millennials at large are actually mined from the lives of white, upper-middle-class millennials. How then should we understand the social location of Black American millennials? This question is of particular importance since many came of age during the first decade of the 21st century. That moment, marked by the election of the United States' first Black president, was once deemed the dawn of a new post-racial era. The Movement for Black Lives has shown that such a statement is far from true...Allen begins with the 'American Dream,' the promise that determination, faith, and hard work make upward mobility and economic abundance accessible to those who work diligently for it. Do Black millennials believe in it? Have they found it applicable to their lives? Relying upon interviews with Black millennials across the country from a variety of regional, ethnic, class, educational, and professional backgrounds, Allen draws a portrait of Black millennial life that unveils how myriad policy, laws, and institutional practices have made the American Dream inaccessible to the majority of Black American millennials. The book's strongest chapters are the ones on student debt, the working-class, and housing. In these chapters, Allen deftly integrates historical analysis, quantitative data, and ethnography to show how inaccessible higher education has become for Black millennials; those who do manage to complete undergraduate degrees still find themselves drowning in debt and unable to cross the threshold into the middle-class. Allen discusses the importance of possessing generational wealth in establishing economic security, something that has eluded Black Americans for centuries. In her discussions about housing, she critically examines how the global recession of 2008 functioned as a devastating depression for Black American communities; not only were they victims of subprime mortgage lending, but they also lost the majority of their wealth when the housing market turned.I expected a few chapters to be a bit bolder, particularly the chapter on love and the chapter on politics and activism. The former didn't discuss how much colorism and anti-Black bias permeate dating life and shape notions of desirability and the latter was too focused on the three interviewees/didn't provide enough analysis and observation of the wider context. I also wish that there had been more discussion of why Black immigrants and their children tend to fare better than multigenerational Black Americans in the labor market. The stereotypes of multigenerational Black Americans as "lazy," "lacking ambition," or suffering from "broken households" conveyed by some interviewees weren't addressed and debunked. The chapter on Hollywood felt a bit out of place in the text as a whole; I wonder whether a chapter about arts and culture more broadly would have tied in more seamlessly.Nonetheless, the text serves as a great primer to understanding the depth of inequity in the current moment. It does a great job of unpacking the structural without obscuring personal narratives. In this way, Allen *visceralizes* the data. 'It Was All a Dream' would fit very well into the readings of an Introduction to Sociology or Introduction to American Studies course.

A true masterpiece that encompasses the REAL DEAL trauma that the diaspora of Black Americans are suffering as much today as we have been since the beginning; when we were brutally forced here from our original homeland. A powerful validation that we're not crazy; we're living in a dream that has traumatized us to our core! And the only way we can survive is to wake up. This book evokes a new call to action; a realization that if we're ever going to heal, we MUST do it from within and stop waiting for, fighting for, organizing for, etc... the things around us (outside of us) to change. We must empower ourselves - from within! WE MUST WAKE UP! No problem can be solved at the level of the problem. This BAD dream will end when the dreamers wake up! No one is excluded.

ANDREW LAWSON is widely regarded as England's leading garden photographer. He has provided the photographs for many books, including Good Planting by Rosemary Verey, Penelope Hobhouse on Gardening, Designing Gardens (9780711217577) by Arabella Lennox Boyd, Little Sparta (9780711220850) by Jessie Sheeler, The Garden at Highgrove by HRH Prince of Wales, and The English Garden (9780711226388)by Ursula Buchan and The New English Garden (9780711232709) also by Tim Richardson. He holds the Royal Horticultural Society's Gold Medal for Photography and the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Garden Writer's Guild. "The New English Garden" by Tim Richardson might easily be mistaken for just another lushly photographed coffee-table book describing well-designed gardens, the "garden porn" that gardeners love to curl up with during the cold winter months when they dream of spring.But "The New English Garden" differs from and is superior to most other books portraying gardens in two ways. First, author Tim Richardson is a knowledgeable garden historian who chose the gardens in his book to illustrate a larger story of the direction in which British garden design has been moving in the past decade or so. This aspect alone places his book a level above the standard "portrait of a garden" collections which simply showcase beautiful gardens of a region or type.However, this book is different in another, even more important way: Richardson is part of a new movement in Britain that is attempting to move gardening from its status as merely a hobby or technical profession to a more widely respected art form, on a plane with visual art, music or writing. This movement insists that for gardening to be taken seriously as an art form, it must be subject to the same type of artistic criticism that differentiates between good and better art, the kind of constructive criticism that pushes artists to improve their work.So after Richardson describes each of the twenty-five gardens in this book and relates why he deems it significant, he then identifies both the most successful aspects of each garden, as well as any weaknesses he perceives. And this last bit is where the big difference lies.It is actually slightly shocking to read something that is not 100% positive about someone's garden, when usually garden write-ups are limited to upbeat, admiring descriptions of both gardens and gardeners. Richardson's suggestions for improvement are of a wholly constructive kind, pointing out specific areas that he believes could be improved or an overall strategy that could make the garden even better than it currently is. But it nonetheless takes a certain amount of chutzpah to say of the Prince of Wales' garden that "the garden at Highgrove does not quite hang together as a coherent whole." And he bluntly states of Piet Oudolf's garden at Scampston Hall that "the overall structure of the new walled garden is a failure."This type of plain speaking will undoubtedly benefit gardening as a whole, as long as it is reserved for serious artistic efforts at gardening - not criticizing well-meaning amateur gardeners' efforts.But just because "The New English Garden" was intelligently-written and added to my understanding of modern gardening doesn't mean it wasn't still a beautiful book with lavish garden photos to drool over. The photographs of Pettifers, Temple Guiting and Gresgarth were particularly magnificently flower-filled. And the photos of some of the gardens planted in the last decade's New Perennials (grasses and large drifts of perennials) style also showed an attractive vision of what these gardens look like at their best.But, in keeping with Richardson's desire for serious criticism, I will point out a couple of things that would have made the book better: First, there sometimes seems to be a disconnect between Andrew Lawson's photos and Richardson's text. One example: Richardson asserts that "perhaps the most successful part of the Tilbury House garden is the walled kitchen garden to the south-west," and describes it at length in appetite-whetting terms, but I could not find a single photo of this "most successful part" of the garden, which was quite disappointing.Another small quibble is the lack of garden maps or plans, which are unfortunately all too rare among garden books. I spent quite a bit of time puzzling out the overall layout of each garden -- something Richardson tries to describe, but not always with success. A picture is worth a thousand words.But these points aside, "The New English Garden" is one of the most important garden books to be published this year in terms of garden writing, and certainly among the more beautiful. Beauty is something universally admired by gardeners, as that is a fundamental part of their vocation, and what a supremely beautiful book this is. Written by Tim Richardson and photographed by Andrew Lawson, Jane Sabire and Rachel Warne, it is an intimate tour of 25 visually spectacular English gardens, all of which were either made or re-designed in the last ten years. Hence the “new” in the title. Weighing in at more than five pounds, it consists of 300-plus pages and is ten by twelve inches, and so is a solid coffee table book that demands to be left out for anyone interested to peruse. Each garden is covered in ten to fifteen sumptuous pages, and you could do much worse that to study one garden each day with your morning coffee, in these dark days of late fall and early winter.English gardening is, at the present moment, at a very interesting inflection point. The 1990s saw the zenith of the “tapestry tradition”, the Arts & Crafts, color-blending movement and the beginning of a less floral, more naturalistic wave, led by the Dutch and German designers. Prominent among them is Piet Oudolf, for example and his famous “Dutch Wave”, that gives greater prominence to the whole plant and its structures in all seasons, than to its floral expression at one brief moment of glory. This new style has been met and matched in England by a more relaxed English style of gardening associated with the gardening legend Beth Chatto and others, in what is called the New Perennial Movement. And recently, there has been a reaction against both of these new waves and a return to a more traditional and familiar English style and vernacular.So this book fascinatingly explores this very vital moment of design flux, that is so very rich in inspiration and possibility. Thoughtful and amazing plant combinations and re-combinations are beautifully presented and detailed. Often a garden profile includes pictures of the garden in late autumn or winter, rimed in frost or dusted with an early light snowfall, and how beautiful these pictures are. The colors and the flowers are sculpturally subtracted, emphasizing the inherent beauty of the compositional plant forms, surely a revealing test of any garden’s underlying design. To me, these are some of the most interesting pictures in this book.There are some very famous gardens presented here, such as Christopher Lloyd’s Great Dixter and the Prince of Wales’ amazing garden at Highgrove, but it also presents the brand new massed plantings of the Olympic Park in London from 2012, as well as the sublime Gresgarth (by Arabella Lennox-Boyd) and Bury Court (by Piet Oudolf). It would be heaven to spend the last two weeks of May and the first two weeks of June some year, touring the great gardens of England, and certainly garden tourism is strongly on the rise there. But for now this wonderful book will do. It is sure to be on many Christmas lists and will be enjoyed by anyone with an eye for the beautiful potential of the garden. It is one of those great gifts that is so much fun to give and even more fun to receive.
