I did love this book on the first read and was so caught up in the way it described their love of horses that I researched where they were located. I understood from a website I found through the book, that they conducted seminars on their ranch. One of the gatherings was described as examining the mystical/spiritual connection between horse and rider. It looked so interesting that I decided to attend. Over a period of two days in a "spiritual" retreat I attended at their private ranch, I found 2 people who seemed deeply steeped in the bloodsport of bullfighting. They had a very detached view of humanity that I found totally opposite of anything I understand as spiritual or mystical. As an example, when we ate lunch, there was large artwork over the buffet table of a cock fight. It was quite disturbing to me and the first hint of where their beliefs would take us.The professional backgrounds of the author and her daughter, who led the group seminar, dealt with severely psychotic types of patients. It seemed to have desensitized them to normal people and for what most of us spiritual seekers understand as spirituality. As a result, many of our group left feeling like the horses were beautiful, but the people were strangely promoting their seminars in completely the wrong category. They were using their gifts of horsemanship to further the sport that tortures for entertainment . . . bullfighting. This was NOT a spiritual/mystical retreat. It seemed to be a vehicle that fed their PhD egos but not their horses. One that was brought out accidentally, needed to be removed by the SPCA it was so starved.During the last half of the last day, they began to defend their love for the ring. When I understood this, I almost stopped breathing at one point. I cannot remember ever leaving someplace with such a need to shake the dust off my feet and move on. Read the book and you run the risk of supporting efforts to resurrect a terrible sport that is outlawed in many parts of the world now, but for whom this group glorifies as noble.Personally, I prefer autistic children and those who are disabled on the backs of horses, not those looking for blood. We are NOT in the dark ages anymore!There are much better spiritual books through, I would look for them. Such as:Zen Mind Zen Horse, Spirituality Through HorsesTao of Equus.

Readers take note: The author is not an American. If you purchase this book, you need to be aware of that and realize that not everyone is eligible to move to and live in Ireland - especially those who are most likely to want to do that, retired Americans. It is not an easy process and you must go through it annually, and since changes to immigration laws in 2015, it is even more difficult - and for many, impossible. I think that should be made very clear in the book description. Lots of helpful info for those eligible to live there, but for most, 90 days is the limit.

I fell in love with the Tao Te Ching when I discovered it nearly 45 years ago. I was so enamored with the book (which I had checked out of the library) that I created a copy for myself on a manual typewriter. (This was back when the book was not readily available in bookstores.) When the Feng-English translation came out, I enjoyed it immensely because it was poetic and accompanied by terrific photographs. It was my favorite for many years. But after years of reading this text as well as many other translations, I have found that Derek Lin's translation and illuminating annotation seems to get closer to the heart of Lao Tzu's message better than any other rendering. It is now my go-to book when I want to recall what Lao Tzu said about a particular topic.

I've read many different translations of this classic text, and recommend doing so to others. Each different translation will give you something different. However, if I'd have to choose only one, or one to start, I'd choose this one. A very readable, clear translation, that still holds close to the more literal ones out there.I also find very helpful the notes that come immediately after each chapter/verse. The notes are highly ordered with numbers pointing to the text.For those with a Kindle: I have this book in print and on Kindle. The Kindle version used to have terrible organisation, with the whole Tao Te Ching being one entry, and I returned it. That is fixed now. There is a proper content page, with a section for each chapter, and a separate entry for its notes. So it is much easier to go back and forth and read favourite chapters when you want it.Highly recommended.

The translator has put a lot of thought into this translation. As I read it, the translation masterfully uses the english language device of the strong verb, which enables the text to carry through its rhythm throughout the 81 chapters.I have just two overall criticisms, about the annotations, and about the purpose of the text. The annotations are more introductory narrative expositions than critical analysis. They are meant to prepare and open the reader to the chapters, not necessarily to elucidate the completeness of each line. To give just one example, chapter 11 discusses , in a nutshell, the nature of activity, creativity, and space, of which the annotations hardly provide an analysis (to give just one example). I would read the chapters as they stand, and look at the annotations only if there is a real question or lack of clarity about the chapters. Reading the other way around, or beginning with the annotations, and then moving to the chapters, risks screwing up the genuine experience of the complexities of the chapters that at the same time are also simple truths.Obviously, an entire world view on metaphysics and cosmology is used or presumed by the original author, and if this were to be defined or discussed in the one page annotations, it would raise the annotations beyond the introductory level for the purpose of which I am understanding them to have been written.Regarding the purpose of the text, it must be kept in mind that this book is a treatise on good government, which means it was written for someone who wants to rule. This makes the text doubly interesting. The book indicates that to rule well, the ruler must know the people s/he governs. This also means that the people, in order to live well, must understand the ruler in his/her different manifestations (see, for example, chapters 17 ff.). So the book must work both ways. More details could have been provided on this, in the foreword or in the annotations.

Derek Lin has performed an outstanding job of helping the Tao to reach out reportedly from a sage Lao Tzu about 2,500 years ago, to the present and still resonate clearly.While the online text found here is missing the annotations that are integral in understanding the translation in today's terms it can be very useful and helpful in that it provides a glimpse for comparison purposeshttp://www.dereklin.com/Tao-Te-ChingOf the ten translations have been reading, I find this to be easiest to follow. Where a meaning differs from some the other translation, in the annotations he explains why. It's really refreshing to read a story that gives such an accurate depiction of what it's like to be a 12 year old girl. In the book Sam struggles with her confidence and it's nice to watch her grow. The book is realistic because Sam isn't immediately amazing at water polo. She works really hard at getting better and it's satisfying to see all her hard work pay off. The story has many lessons, but I think the most important one is that it teaches teens to not give up on what they're passionate about just because they might not be amazing right off the bat. It's also really nice to see such a positive group of young girls who, despite all their differences, support each other.

This book does an excellent job of showcasing how a young girl can grow and learn through any challenge. The main character, Sam, sets an example for how kids can find strength independently to overcome obstacles, and end up with new friends and a new hobby in the process. It is well written, entertaining and unique. I recommend it for any kids ages 9-13, especially for those who are still trying to find themselves. It's a fun read about a cool sport that deserves to be talked about more. Hope you can enjoy it too!

A great read about perseverance for pre-teen girls. It's encouraging to see books about young girls that are active, engaged, and driven. I like that the heroine of the book learns not to take adversity personally. I think the depiction of progress is realistic as well - for girls learning the struggle and importance of hard work I would definitely recommend this book!

This cookbook has favorites like Pizza, and Chicken dishes with included ingredient sizes and serving sizes. My favorite thing offered in the book aside from the dishes are the knowledge on cooking ingredients, it reminds me of my favorite Gordon Ramsey cook book because he does exactly the same thing. Reading this I have learned about tomato sauce, pasta, cooking times, yeast, flower, and many other cooking things worth knowing. My favorite dish that I will 100% be making is the Baked Ziti with Ricotta, I loved Baked Ziti but I always use recipes from google and never a cookbook. I will also be trying the Chicago Deep Dish Pizza. The only downside of the book is that the author does not provide pictures of the food. When I am reading this book, I imagine the food looking beautifully cooked but not everyone knows exactly what they are cooking is supposed to look like as a finished product.

This inexpensive Italian Cookbook is really nice. It starts out with an introduction to the book, a bit about the author, kitchen safety tips, recipe abbreviations, recipe equivalents which come in handy, cooking conversion. The reader learns about using quality ingredients, cheese tips and more. Learning about what flours to use for what, the different yeasts. Plus, which in my mind is very important is the different kinds of pasta and cooking times. The best tomato sauces are important too in any great Italian dish.The recipes include pizza's, chicken recipes, meat recipes and even a few dessert recipes. If you are looking for a great Italian recipe, this book will give you a great start for that perfect meal. No complicated instructions to follow. Servings, cooking level and instructions. A perfect cookbook!This review is done strictly voluntarily and thoughts are my own.

The recipes specify the level of complexity, and how many people they will feed. Strangely, the recipes in this little book are mostly for dishes which I already cook frequently, and even the recipes are very similar to m own. I will probably use his recipe for pizza dough, though, because the one I usually use is in a paperback cookbook which is almost as decrepit as I am. I will also probably try his recipe for panna cotta, since it looks easy and good and uses ingredients and techniques I'm used to.

I so looked forward to be able to use the Kindle version because I like to cut/paste into my own notes on the computer. BUT you cannot use the search tool to find the main word that you are trying to look up - the search index only shows where that word is used in the descriptions, but not he main entry! That is really dumb!Revised rating (from 1 star to 3 stars). (By the way, I wrote Dr. Mounce about the complaints about the indexing lack, and he replied that he had no control over the Kindle version.)I found a way to get around the lack of an index. Since the entries are in alphabetical order, it is fairly easy to slide the "progress bar" at the bottom of the page to get to the word you want - just as fast as flipping through the printed book. The other feature that ought to be added, however, besides an index or searchable key words, is to activate the cross references within the book so you can easily get to the related entries.Revised back to one star - every time I go to the Kindle version, I get upset for the same reason it has gotten so many one star ratings.Whoever is in charge of this edition, please revise it!! Thank you.

As others have said (how I wish I had read their ratings before getting the Kindle version!!), the kindle version is not worth anything. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THE E BOOK, since is cannot be used as a dictionary or reference work is meant to be used. What an utter and total waste of money AND a greedy rip-off by the kindle folks. Utterly disgusting. They should refund all kindle customers who spent money on something useless, or at least give them a discount so they can get the book form. Their actions in this are merely self-serving, without any demonstration of consideration for the customer. We deserve an apology and the book form of the work. This makes me hesitate to buy anything like this from them ever. I was a Nook user before someone gave me a kindle. they each have their advantages and disadvantages. I imagine the Nook devices have advanced much since I was given mine, but my oldie does the necessary. One feature I REALLY like on the Nook is the ability to sort by price, which makes it possible to get a huge number of post-copywrite books, though one must beware of the OCR books. Maybe the Amazonians will get wise and reformat Mounce's book for easy searchng so that it can be used by a kndle ser..

The kindle's version don't have an interactive table of contents for finding the words in the dictionary that one would want to find which is a very bad thing to lack. To get around this short coming one will have to use the "progress bar" at the bottom of the page to get to the word one wants to get at, which is effective enough for doing so. Also one can do a word search as well which effectively helps somewhat as well.The table of contents very sadly is only link to the different sections of the dictionary but not to the words.

I teach adult classes at the church attend and bought this book as a teaching tool. In my opinion, the Kindle version is virtually useless as a resource for teaching because you cannot search for specific words. I would like to get my money back because I do not believe the site fully disclosed how useless the Kindle version is for those who want to use it as a teaching resource.

I would not recommend this in the Kindle format! It is not set up as a Kindle Dictionary. Hence, you cannot reference it from other Kindle books. It seems very "clunky" to look up words in this dictionary on a Kindle device. You have to use the search option.It seems that it could have been set up as a Kindle Dictionary. I have the same book in The Olive Tree app. There it acts as a true dictionary being able to be referenced from other books.

This book turned out to be better than what I had hoped for. English-to-Hebrew dictionary is very helpful. The definitions and word type (noun, verb, etc.) provided for the Hebrew words are informative and I especially like the included transliteration which helps with the reading of the Hebrew word.The list of Biblical Hebrew words is also useful although it would be good to have words which appear less than 50 times in the Bible included as well.The short introduction on how to do Bible word study is helpful.

Whether you're a pastor or a new believer, get this. It helps to know Greek and Hebrew but is absolutely not necessary. Look up an English word, see the Greek/Hebrew spelling, and then be given a phonetic spelling in English! Mounce carefully explains how the word is used in the original languages, but doesn't do so in a way that's overwhelming! Highly recommend this book.

There's a lot of good information in here but it's scattered and the writing style is more narrative than I would prefer. I don't mean to be harsh but I think this book would be significantly better if it was organized better and was boiled down to about 100 page instead of 400. As another reviewer mentioned, you don't even get to the "master recipe" until page 53. For my first few attempts, I found myself hunting back through the first few chapters, making sure I didn't miss some briefly-mentioned tidbit. The same is true for other recipes too. For example, the pumpernickel recipe on page 123 mentions applying a cornstarch wash to your dough before cooking. So how do you make cornstarch wash? It's not in the index. The answer turned out to be a side note on page 104. Troubleshooting so-so bread also takes a good bit of rummaging.The book shows you how to make a lot of different types of bread with the same dough. Considering how much dough you make at a time, it's good to have options. There are good ones but it seems like the authors are stretching the content when some of the options they present are essentially "big round loaf" vs "long skinny loaf."Like others, I also find the book's "bread in 5" slogan misleading. Even if cooking a loaf took five minutes of hands-on work, it's not like you spend five minutes getting a loaf into the oven and then come back in 45 minutes. The work is broken up between preparing a loaf, coming back to preheat the oven, coming back to do last minute prep work before putting the loaf in the oven, removing the parchment paper 20 minutes later, letting it bake the rest of the way, taking the loaf out and letting it cool a bit before digging in. It certainly beats making a fresh batch of kneaded bread but it's still a fairly long process that needs your attention. That's not bad but it's something to be aware of.One last thing to mention is that this also took more of an investment than I imagined. To do it right, you will need a sealable 5-6 liter/quart container, a pizza stone, a pizza peel and the book gives you a few options for creating steam, to give your bread a crispy crust. I ended up buying a small brownie pan to hold water for steam. You can forgo some of those things if you want but I added it up and including the book, I'm $115 into this little experiment. I'm okay with that but it's something to consider.

As far as culinary skills go, I'm just an average guy in the kitchen. For years my wife has done the majority of the cooking, because she's better at it and much faster than I am. We typically divide the duties with me outside at the grill (if the meal requires anything to be grilled) and her inside doing the real work. Because of some work schedule changes, I've had to up my game a bit in the kitchen, but I still just consider myself a B student in the kitchen.This cookbook completely changed my "average" image though. I've been baking bread with the original edition of Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day since January 2011 and I have literally become renowned in my neighborhood and at work for baking amazing bread. One by one I've had half the dads in my neighborhood over and taught them how to bake amazing bread.It couldn't be simpler.For the basic recipe, you mix yeast, salt, water, and flour in a big tub and put it in the fridge to rise and chill overnight. Then the next day you can start baking. Bake however much you want, and then leave the rest of the dough covered in the tub for up to two weeks. You never have to kneed or punch the dough. And besides the initial rise, you only need to let the formed loaves (I always bake more than one) rest and un-chill for about a half hour before you bake them.I can whip up a batch of dough in less than ten minutes. I store all my ingredients in plastic storage containers out in the garage, so I just grab what I need and bring it into the kitchen. I always mix the double batch recipe that they describe as the "6-2-2-13 rule" in one of the sidebars. That way I have plenty of dough to make loaves for my family and make enough to take in to share at work.I rarely make the dough and bake it on the same day, because the dough is stickier and harder to work with at first. Although you CAN form and bake the loaves after the initial three hour rise, it's a lot simpler to let the dough chill overnight before you try to bake with it.The results are amazingly beautiful and delicious (and cheap) loaves of bread. I wish I could post pictures here, but I don't think I can add images until after the book is released to the public in October.The book has a great variety of recipes. I love making the deli rye and pumpernickel. Or if you prefer the simplicity of the master recipe, it's easy enough to stick with the master recipe and just slightly modify it by adding other ingredients. You can add fresh rosemary to make herb loaves. My wife's favorite is for me to add a cup of sunflower seeds before mixing. Another favorite of mine is to substitute dark beer for half of the water and add a cup of grated cheese and a cup of chopped fresh jalapenos.I think what I like most about these recipes is that they have a very wide margin for error. It's pretty hard to botch this up. Plus it's very easy to modify the recipes to suit your taste. If you like the flavor of yeast, then use more yeast. If you're watching your sodium, cut back on the salt. If you find that the dough is coming out too dry, add just a touch more water and cut back a half a cup of flour at a time until you find your perfect blend.Another simple thing to do is start with the master recipe and just add your favorite seeds to the top before you bake. Sesame seeds are my favorite. Flax seeds are also delicious. It's such a simple way to completely change the flavor of the loaf, all with the same batch of dough.Once you feel comfortable with the basic "master" recipe, it's very easy to branch out to the other recipes in the book. I've enjoyed all of the recipes that I've tried: whole wheat, semolina, English granary with barley malt and malted wheat flakes, and more. They're all amazing.What do you need to get started? Not much really, but I found that some extra accessories like a baking stone, pizza peel, and parchment paper really made things go better for me. Individual yeast packets at the grocery store are probably the most expensive ingredient (about a buck per packet). It's a lot cheaper to buy a pound of yeast for under $4 at Smart & Final. Same goes for the flour: buy big bags of flour at Smart & Final to save money.For any of the difficult ingredients like rye flour (which is nearly impossible to find in my neighborhood) I just buy it here on Amazon. Anything I can't find here at Amazon I can find pretty easily (but not as cheaply) at King Arthur.What's new in this edition?I've been using the original edition of this book for years. The "New" edition has some nice new changes.* Weights & Measures: All of the measures for the ingredients are now listed in tables. Instead of just listing the measurements in cups, they are listed in U.S. units (cups, tablespoons, etc.), metric units, and also by weight. The most exact measurement is the weight, because regardless of how firmly or lightly you pack your scoops (resulting in different quantities), the weight is what it is. If you pack your cups densely, then 13 cups of flour will be more than is intended. But if you measure by weight, it doesn't matter how many cups you scoop.* More photos: A picture is worth a thousand words. The original edition had good photos, but this one has even more. They really help.* More recipes: The authors have a very active website with a thriving base of fans. They've done a nice job in this edition of adding some extra recipes suggested by or inspired by these fans.* FAQ: This edition includes a great list of Frequently Asked Questions that have come up on their website.* Gluten free: They've added an entire chapter of gluten free recipes.* Tips & Techniques: They've expanded the contents of the Tips & Techniques chapter to provide even more helpful items.* Improved index: The authors' description mentions an enhanced index. The advanced reviewer copy that I have doesn't include the index yet, so I'll just have to take their word for it. I thought the index in the original version was pretty strong, so I'm eager to see what they've done to improve it. Sadly the table of contents is still really bad. It just lists the chapters without any details. (Was pumpernickel listed under The Master Recipe or Peasant Loaves? Gaaah!)I am obviously a huge fan of this technique and these recipes. I've personally coaxed dozens of my friends to buy the first edition and try baking for themselves. I've also given many copies of the first edition as gifts to friends. It's been a blast to see regular guys like me learn to bake amazing breads for our families. A bunch of us even got together and had a huge "Dad's Bake Sale" to raise money for one of our kids' sports teams. This book is a serious game changer. I am not kidding when I say that I haven’t bought bread from the store since buying this book. I have tried 4 different recipes so far, and they’ve all been great! The instructions are very easy to understand, and the process is very hands-off.I have a toddler and can easily whip up some dough while he eats lunch. I then let it rest and put it in the fridge until I want to use it (at least overnight). I usually will make up a loaf before he wakes up in the morning, and we have fresh bread for dinner that night!So, so easy, and I can’t stop telling people about this book! I highly recommend checking out their YouTube video (channel is called “Bread in 5”) about gluten cloaking. That was the trickiest part for me, but the video helped a lot.I’m including pictures when I first made up the dough, two hours later, then when I made a loaf the next day, and the finished product! This is the light wheat bread.

I have baked so many loaves of bread after getting the original book - and I've given this book away so many times i had to get the revised edition. This was a transformative book series for me - I grew up in a household (Italian) where I thought fresh bread meant all day baking, kneading, flour everywhere. In this system (check out a Youtube video from their channel to see how easy it is) you make everything in a single bucket and can really have fresh bread very quickly. My friends demand I bring bread to parties, and it is cheap enough (about 50 cents a loaf for artisan bread) that I pretty much make bread for everyone. I was so happy to learn I could have healthy, fresh bread in my life - no preservatives, no weird stuff - just flour, water, salt and yeast, and it was easier than I ever imagined.

This was an excellent book that brought to light much of what I did not know or understand. Gloege's thoroughly researched book filled in details of the history of my more conservative Christian brothers and sisters.The detailed history of how the leaders at the Moody Bible Institute were involved in shaping American Fundamentalism explained so much for me. I have been baffled by what ties together so many conservative Christians from disparate denominations and how they came to be culturally and politically aligned. Why do they focus on the culture wars while seeming to neglect the part of Jesus' message to feed the hungry, visit the prisoner, and stand up for the downtrodden? Now it makes sense. Leaders from MBI and their colleagues around the country began a network of people opposed to what was then modern Biblical literary criticism. Those heading up the "Fundamentals" project made their names in marketing, and they knew that they had to focus on what united them, ignoring where they differed. To do this, they needed to craft a unified story, including a focus on a Bible that was the literal words of God rather than the Word of God as written and debated by humans. They stayed away from creeds, for this might bring out the differences in their target audience. And they succeeded beyond their wildest dreams in crafting a bloc that accepted their new conservative focus as being what the Christian faith had always been about. The details of letters and discussions from 100 years ago also explain the tendency for conservatives to discredit and disdain scholars, which makes me wonder if we will ever be able to find common ground.

Dr Gloege's examination and exposition of the history of modern evangelicalism, and role played by Dwight Moody and his namesake Institute in Chicago was eye-opening for me, an Episcopal priest of well over 30 years. As a product of the very "modernist, liberal, German theology" that all the principal actors described in this book abhorred, I was completely unaware of this history. Yet, given the current state of the Republican Party, and the strong role played by the (so-called) "religious right" since the '80's and Reagan Era, it was fascinating to discover the historical roots of a sept of Christianity that is at once fascinating and frustrating for a social and theological liberal such as myself. I highly recommend this book to other liberal church leaders trying to understand the thinking of our conservative (or downright reactionary) fellow Christians, if only to give us a means for engaging in a dialogue - as opposed to a diatribe.

Full disclosure -- I work / teach at Moody Bible Institute.First, the book is an enjoyable read. As far as the author's thesis goes, I will say that I will never be able to see the image of D. L. Moody again without thinking of the Quaker Oats "Quaker Man"! (Both are more or less images of the corporate brand.)Without getting too deeply into the theoretical-historical weeds I would just say the Gloege does not give enough credit to the broader theological commitments of men like Gray and Crowell (and Moody!) True, they were dispensational premillennialists -- but they were evangelical Protestants as well. The latter meant a commitment to more fundamental (pun intended) evangelical concerns; (of course, here one would note Bebbington's quadrilateral -- the four key elements of "evangelical"). This book is, of course, critical history (and a well done in that regard) with the focus of that discipline and all the required "historical objectivity" necessary for such a treatise; still, it seems to me that Gloege (and this would go for Matthew Avery Sutton's "American Apocalypse") does not grasp the mindset and worldview of "genuine believers." That is, in addition to all the motivations Gloege acknowledges (and uncovers) that drove Crowell and Gray he does not give due consideration (in my opinion) to the theology, the beliefs, and especially the worldview of these men as Evangelical Christians. For a better treatment of the history of twentieth century evangelicalism that does give due consideration to those matters (the theology, the beliefs, the worldview of Evangelicals) see Molly Worthen's "Apostles of Reason."

Deep historical of one aspect of Moody Bible Institute.

Excellent Book!! Cannot recommend highly enough. Tells the story of how modern evangelical Christianity was invented. Following notions invented between 1880-1920: "Personal relationship with God", "The Rapture", dispensationalim, and the generic "Fundamentals" of modern evangelicalism (versus the traditional creed based mainline denominations). This book really describes how Moody and his big business financial backers invented and, more significantly, marketed, modern evangelical Christianity.

An interesting look into the history and development of the fundamentalist/evangelical movement, especially its utilization of consumer-orientated mass-marketing. An insightful commentary on the current state of corporate evangelicalism.

A fantastic, thorough, and well-written study about religion and business in U.S. history.

This book is exceptionally written. The depth and breadth of primary sources are powerful. The book takes a realistic look at its subject, although some might consider its depiction as unflattering.
