I really like this book. Had the author stopped at Chapter 19, I would have given it 5 stars. Honestly, 21-23 floundered and she seemed out of her depth. I think she could have taken highlights from those chapters and just added it to her "What Next" section. A number of statements not properly backed up with references to support the claims and so forth. That said, the book is very insightful and motivating. I have a number of highlights throughout and it has motivated me to continue my Feng Shui journey. As I am clearing my clutter, I am adding elements of Feng Shui as I go. I will definitely go back, once my house is finished and re-read the book entirely, or at least the highlighted areas. I have already recommended this book to friends.

A couple of years ago I bought eight books on de-cluttering (but not this one -- I didn't yet know it existed) to help me go through my own stuff; plus half a century of stuff I had inherited the job of sorting through. (A deceased friend had also inherited stuff from others, so, the job I faced was really de-cluttering belongings from not just two people, but from a lot more people than that.) With two of those books I had bought back then, I had made very good progress for quite a long while. My two favorites of those original books I had picked up -- ("Soul Space" by Xorin Balbes and "Breathing Room" by Lauren Rosenfeld and Dr. Melva Green) -- were very inspirational and helpful to me ... but after a while (a good long while!) my de-cluttering work hit a plateau, or a slow-way-down point, for reasons that I didn't fully understand. (I think, in hindsight, it was partly that such a mega-big improvement had been made already, at that point, that I couldn't imagine that much more needed to be done? More was arguably needed, but it felt like "diminishing returns" had set in, at some point.) Part of me had wanted to go further with discarding more stuff, but I couldn't get overly enthused about continuing -- so I found myself "resting on my laurels". Despite huge improvements in many areas, overall, something still felt somehow "off" -- but I couldn't logically pinpoint what or why, until I got this book. Within hours of getting a used copy of this book, though, and randomly flipping through it to get a quick overview, I found myself all excited about getting back to the task(s) at hand. I got right back into the swing of things once "flow of energy in a household" and "clotting" and other concepts were how I was thinking, instead of just "is there space for this item". I happily found myself quickly picking things, in my head, that I wanted to take another look at: to see how I felt about them, in energy terms. By the time three hours had past, I had not just looked, but had made two or three trips to the dumpsters. When thinking of it in terms of a home's positive energy flow, and seeing the examples and analogies used in this book, it suddenly became easy to part with the "hardest items". When viewed strictly as "do you have room for this" and "is it stored neatly" I couldn't (formerly) get rid of some things; because I did actually have enough room for them, and they weren't in my way. Once I began seeing keeping the items as a "clotting" problem or a "flow" problem with a household's hidden or invisible energy, then that's what it took to get me to "flow" those items elsewhere. I should say that with my deceased friend (and her relatives and friend's) stuff, I had also found that a book called "Past and Present" is also very helpful. (Especially if you are the only person working to declutter a half-century's worth of a deceased friend's belongings; and the stuff that person had inherited from others, and had kept, just because so-and-so had owned it.) Those four de-cluttering books made a very good team, I thought! (Again, I should note: if it was just my own stuff, I wouldn't have needed that many books! Decluttering my own stuff is easy enough that I might not have needed any books? But this isn't the first time that I got "stuck" with the job of going through a dead friend's stuff, and trying to respectfully find homes for anything worth saving -- so to me, having four favorite de-cluttering books, plus a few others that had okay ideas, made solid sense in my situation.) Anyway, those four favorite de-cluttering and life-changing books give me a very well-rounded series of ways to tackle big jobs. Soul Space and Breathing Room were good "logical books" that worked, I thought, very well for facing the sort of problems that systemic logic and your five senses works so well on perceiving and analyzing. This cool little book, and "Past and Present," helped me a lot, though, to go beyond that -- especially when "visible logic" had failed to give me a good enough answer as to what to do next with a particular series of items. I'll also be checking out this author's other books, before too long!

I read the original long ago and have bought copies over the years as gifts. This time I sent the revised edition to a friend who is getting ready to move and needs support for getting rid of stuff! GREAT BOOK

This book will stay with you long after it's read. This book is tremendously insightful on how to allow good energy to flow through your home while removing objects that are obstacles to the path of serenity. It deeply motivates you to take action.I've always enjoyed living in an aesthetically pleasing environment. An environment that I enjoy coming home to and reluctant on leaving. This book has deeply motivated me to continue my Feng Shui journey. Removing clutter and aligning what I own to enhance my life. It's a book worth reading and re-reading (at least various highlighted areas) refreshing one's energy.I believer it would have been more effective if certain chapters were omitted but I can see the value of adding those chapters, they simply didn't enhance me personally. It doesn't take away from the fact that it's an Amazing book for de-cluttering one's life by using the Feng Shui techniques.

I am in the middle of reading this ebook on my iPhone Kindle app at lunch. This book has inspired me to clear a lot of my clutter (old clothes I never wear, old books I don't like, makeup I don't use, etc.) - and I feel better and have more room in my condo as a result.

Excellent book. As a therapist I have recommended this book and as people begin the process of clearing out the physical junk, much of the mental issues begin to clear up and people do begin to move on with their lives.

In my view, this is the best clutter-removal helper that I have found. I have given this book as gifts to at least six friends. In one case, it completely turned my friend's life around. That said, if one wants to clear clutter, the best questions to ask oneself are:: "Am I going use this in the next ten years of my life? Does this make me happy? Can someone else derive pleasure from this more than I can? I look at my kitchen, my home office, my library, my garage, etc. I am currently casting so many things away. As I do so, I feel much freer. I finally discarded the rest of my PhD materials today! I gave them to Salvation Army. Tomorrow will be the third day of disengaging from many of the things that were crucial to me before but are no longer. I am happy to think that some how these things will find happy homes! I have been intermittently involved in this de-cluttering for the past ten years. Today I have found myself to be ruthless I love the feeling! Have I had any regrets? Only a few. But then I will never again be the size of the dresses I gave away!

I bought this book several years ago and it was so good, I got her Sacred Spaces book, too. After taking her concepts to heart, I had a garage sale and grossed $3,000. So I know they work. Thank you, Karen. Everyone should read your book. We would be a better species for it.

Review

"Donovan combines his masterful research skills and narrative gifts in recounting the full story of the most famous Apollo trip...Donovan's history is a powerfully written and irresistible celebration of the Apollo missions."―Booklist (starred review)"Exceptionally researched, this exciting, sometimes harrowing book highlights the work not only of the pioneering astronauts but also of thousands of technicians and engineers. This is a perfect volume to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first lunar landing and all that led up to it."― Publishers Weekly (starred) "This is the best book on Apollo that I have read. Extensively researched and meticulously accurate, it successfully traces not only the technical highlights of the program but also the contributions of the extraordinary people who made it possible."―Mike Collins, Command module pilot, Apollo 11"A gripping yet wonderfully detailed account of one of humanity's greatest achievements. Shoot for the Moon gives a fascinating insight into the golden age of space exploration."―Tim Peake"It was one of humankind's greatest achievements, and here, perhaps for the first time, is the whole story, fastidiously reported and elegantly told. With Shoot For the Moon, James Donovan captures it all-the science, the engineering, the clashing egos, the Cold War politics. But what's even more impressive, he does it without depriving us of the essential magic that was Apollo, this Promethean program that dared to aim as high and as far as man could go."―Hampton Sides, author Ghost Soldiers, In the Kingdom of Ice, and On Desperate Ground "With a brilliant eye for detail and an elegant sense of historical narrative, Donovan's Shoot the Moon is sure to be a space race classic."―Annie Jacobsen, bestselling author & Pulitzer Prize finalist

If you think you know this story or if you are new to it, you will be captivated by this gracefully written book. The research is impeccable, and the complicated scientific material rendered comprehensible to all by the author's straightforward and clear prose. This is a book worthy of the heroes who reached for the stars and left to their nation and the world a record of extraordinary achievement.

I'm more into history than science, and with the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing coming up, this feat definitely qualifies as history, even though I remember watching it as an 11yr. old kid on the B&W TV in the corner of our living room. The scientific details described here are understandable to--and appreciated by--this non-scientist. And I love the narrative style that reads like a good fiction novel. The hold-on-to-your-seats description of the actual moon landing had me doubting they'd make it even while knowing that they did. If you have any interest at all in the space race and Apollo 11, get this book. Command module pilot Michael Collins says it's "extensively researched and meticulously accurate" and he would be the person to know if any detail is missing or inaccurate.

The Apollo program was vast and complicated, yet this absorbing narrative gets to the heart of the story and makes it human. James Donovan’s focus is on the men and women who gave their all to the mission, whether it be the countless technicians or the famous astronauts themselves. His writing is infused with energy and purpose—he has a great eye for detail and atmosphere, and the narrative never gets bogged down by the enormity of the mission. Every reader knows how this ends, but it takes a special author to make it suspenseful and interesting nonetheless. A spectacular read.

Donovan's Shoot for the Moon is an instant classic. From the Mercury and Gemini missions to Neal Armstrong's triumphant first step on the Moon, it's all here. A truly great read. And, as a bonus, it's chock full of photographs, many in full color. Highly recommend.

Before reading this book, all I knew about Apollo 11 was “One small step for man….” But in Shoot for the Moon, James Donovan takes us on a dramatic journey back to the “space race” of the 20th Century — through all the drama that led to the incredible moment when the Apollo 11 astronauts — and hundreds of thousands of others involved in the effort — made President Kennedy’s ambitious goal a reality. (In 1961, to a joint session of Congress, Kennedy had said “I believe this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to earth.” [p. 98] I love where Donovan quotes astronaut Gus Grissom commenting “It’s as if somebody had said, ‘Let’s build New York City overnight.’” [p. 99]I was fascinated and overcome by all that was involved in taking each step toward the ultimate Apollo 11 mission—and both entertained and enriched by the fabric of details (personal, technical, and historical) that Donovan, a master storyteller, managed to weave into a history book that reads like a novel. (Perhaps worth admitting that I teared up at least a few times in the book.)I’ll share with you one detail toward the end that warmed my heart (but didn’t make me cry). Included in the small packet of items that the astronauts left on the moon for posterity were “two medals commemorating Vladimir Komarov and Yuri Gagarin, a nod of respect to their [Russian cosmonaut] rivals….” [p. 376] I love that. After reading this book I felt some pride: remembering that it was indeed possible for America to achieve great things, with talented, committed people working together on ambitious goals. And I’m still gobsmacked by the fact that this incredible feat took place 50 years ago—when the computers NASA used didn’t have a fraction of the power of our smart phones. How on earth (and the moon) they did that….Michael Collins, one of the Apollo 11 astronauts, says “This is the best book on Apollo that I have read.” (A safe bet that he’s read them all.) I’m no space buff, but I take his word for that. This book is not only an impressive contribution to the literature of US history, but, lucky for us, also a great read.

On May 25, 1961, in a joint session of Congress, President Kennedy made perhaps the boldest statement ever uttered in that arena: “I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth.” Kennedy promised “a major national commitment of scientific and technical manpower, material, and facilities . . . a degree of dedication, organization, and discipline which have not always characterized our research and development efforts.” Donovan does a dazzling job of chronicling this national commitment by first reminding us of the circumstances and actions that preceded Kennedy's bold challenge to the nation. He then captivates us with a vivid account of the Herculean efforts that went into successfully achieving this lofty goal ahead of schedule, focusing on the brilliant, skilled, and sometimes colorful, cast of personalities responsible.

A very well written historical narrative that really brings that period in history to life.

Review

"Dangerous Games presents a detailed and multi-layered history of the social realities surrounding Role Playing Games (RPGs), analyzing a complex legacy of cultural and religious epistemologies, in order to argue that the corresponding moral panic over such games is itself a form of dangerous corrupted play. ... Overall, Dangerous Games is an important read for students and scholars of contemporary history, religion, popular culture, and mythology." (Nova Religio)

From the Inside Flap

"Joseph P. Laycock's book delves into the minds of both avid gamers and evangelical Christians and returns with surprising and unsettling conclusions. Gaming, Laycock shows, teaches social and psychological strategies to resist cultural authority and to view reality from radically new perspectives. This book affirms the transformational power that motivates this increasingly popular activity, and thus it is essential reading for scholars of both contemporary popular culture and American religions."―Bill Ellis, Professor Emeritus, English and American Studies, Pennsylvania State University “Laycock’s book brings a robust, theoretically informed eye to a topic that has been understudied by sociologists. His case is presented in such a way that other scholars could apply his method and understanding of moral panic to other aspects of popular culture. This is a crucial aspect of scholarship. Laycock writes engagingly, tells a deft story, and advances our understanding.”―Doug Cowan, Professor of Religious Studies and Social Development Studies, Renison University College “Laycock provides an in-depth, theoretically informed analysis of fantasy role-playing games that will both help scholars interpretively and further allow instructors to provide students with a more sophisticated view of their culture. This book more broadly examines the social construction of reality, particularly religion. Laycock's approach makes a much-needed contribution to the understanding of the human need and capacity for creating and inhabiting multiple realities. A truly novel interpretation.”―David G. Bromley, Professor of Religious Studies and Director of the World Religions and Spirituality Project, Virginia Commonwealth University Â

Long, long ago, back in the ancient junior-high days, I played Dungeons & Dragons. This was back in the old boxed set era — what I still think of as the glory days of D&D — and I’ll freely admit it was a weird game. Most game sessions involved exploring underground dungeons populated by nothing by seemingly random collections of monsters living in squalor but surrounded by treasure. Wizards weren’t allowed to wear armor or carry weapons more significant than a dagger, and their spells disappeared from their minds as soon as they were cast — unless they’d memorized the same spell more than once. And there was some sort of armadillo that had somehow evolved the ability to cause metal to rust. But the weirdest thing of all was how many people believed that playing a game of pretend could cause you to worship the devil.I was lucky, because while my parents surely thought D&D was weird, they never believed it was evil, and they never told me I wasn’t allowed to play. But there were lots of people who bought into that ridiculous story. But why did people believe it? Why did people push it? What were they getting out of pushing something so utterly deranged? That’s what this book is about — why was there a huge moral panic about D&D (and roleplaying games in general), why were people so eager to believe that bookish teenagers were devil worshipers, who were the people helping to fan the flames, and what benefits did they gain from inventing conspiracy theories that made no rational sense?Laycock’s book is exhaustively detailed, detailing the history of the game and the panic from the beginning, setting down the names of a vast number of conspiracy theorists, and analyzing not just the motives of the theorists, but the many ways they were actually very similar to the teenagers they were targeting.Let’s start out with this, though — this isn’t an easy, two-nights-to-finish pop-psych skimmer. This is a pretty serious academic work. There are hefty chunks of the book devoted to professorial discussions of play, religion, and the imagination. Those may sound easy and fun, but when you’re analyzing the research into these academic areas, they can be a bit of a slog to get through. There are pages of this book you may have to force yourself to get through, particularly if you’re not well-versed in these academic areas. This may sound like a bad thing, but it ain’t really. You learn stuff going through these sections, and learning this stuff helps you appreciate Laycock’s analysis later in the book. This is the nature of academic works, and it don’t make it bad just ’cause it ain’t easy. What are some of the things we learn in Laycock’s analysis? One of the key discussions is about play and imagination — particularly when it’s healthy and when it’s unhealthy, and what happens when people can’t tell the difference between their imaginations and reality. I don’t think it’ll come as a great surprise to anyone who’s followed this phenomenon before, but there are some serious similarities between D&D players and the conspiracy theorists who persecuted them. D&D players played at being brave heroes battling against monstrous horrors to save the innocent. And the conspiracy theorists like Patricia Pulling, William Dear, and Jack Chick also played at being brave heroes battling against monstrous horrors to save the innocent. Now which ones do you think knew they were playing a game, and which ones do you think had mistaken their game for reality?Even then, there are some items in here that still surprised me. I never really imagined there were people who were actually opposed to anyone using their imagination — but there are, because imagining things means thinking of things that God didn’t create. And this distrust of the imagination actually extends back centuries — some Greek philosophers didn’t trust fiction or the arts at all, and even Thomas Jefferson hated novels because he thought books should only convey things that were true, not falsities and fictions. There’s a lot of excellent stuff to learn in this book. If you’re an old-school gamer with a taste for the hobby’s history, if you’ve got an interest in moral panics, if you love learning new things about how humans use and abuse play and religion, you’ll probably really enjoy this book.

This book is a mix of RPG industry history, and sociology/religious studies text. The sociology parts are presented as an academic view of the various moral panics that have been associated with role playing games. The religious studies aspect includes an analysis of how RPGs are and are not similar to religion, and why this comparison was so often made in society at large. You may or may not agree with the author's conclusions but I feel it these are mostly a fair analysis and not merely a cheap shot at religion generally. The book is well written and the author keeps the subject matter interesting. For RPG fans, the history of TSR and White Wolf is worth the price of admission alone.

Excellent book! I highly recommend it if you remember all nonsense hysteria around D&D and wonderful what was going on. Its well researched and covers the clamour around Role Playing games in the 1980s and 90s. There is a lot to unpack in this book and honestly I will have to probably read it twice. Mr. Laycock lays out both the history around Dungeon and Dragon and the groups like BADD that claimed games such at it , were going to corrupt the young.

When I first saw this book I thought it was going to simply present the connection between the satanic panic and rpgs (with a focus on d&d). Having heard that story many times before, I was reluctant to read this book. But it actually has a lot of interesting insights, a unique methodology, and compelling argument that can be read profitability by scholars who are not gamers, and by gamers who think they already know the full story.Surprisingly, most gamers I know who have read the better known popular history books on gaming (like playing at the world) haven’t heard of this book.

Very insightful look into the root causes of the "Satanic panic" of the '70s-'90s, as well as the birth of TSR and White Wolf games. Yes, it's written with sociologists and religious studies majors in mind, but this is one of the few academic books on gaming that deserves a wider audience. The most enjoyable book on gaming culture I've read since I, Avatar by Mark Stephen Meadows.

Superb, thoughtful, well-researched. If you're interested in the history and culture of role-playing games, the nature of moral panics, or the sociology of religion, this is a fascinating read. Makes a good companion piece with one of my other favourite books about RPGs, Daniel Mackay's The Fantasy Role-Playing Game: A New Performing Art.

Excellent book, explored why people are afraid of such RPGs
