About the Author

Larry Scheckel taught high school-level physics and aerospace science for over 38 years. He was named Tomah (Wisconsin) Teacher of the Year three times, and Presidential Awardee at the state level for six years. Scheckel has authored articles for The Science Teacher magazine and The Physics Teacher magazine, and for a number of years has answered science-related questions in the twice-weekly Tomah Times, out of which this book grew. Scheckel has been a Science Olympiad coach, robotics mentor, organized star gazing sessions, and given orientation flights to students, and he has given presentations to thousands of adults and students in such venues as Children's Museums, Boys and Girls Clubs, Rotary, and conventions.He lives with his wife in Tomah, Wisconsin.

Larry Scheckel was my high school science teacher. I can easily say he was one of my best teachers ever. If every teacher taught with the passion Scheckel did, our country would be in much better shape. It has been over 30 years since I sat in Scheckel's classroom (OMG!), but after reading this book I can tell he still has that zeal. And he hasn't lost his sense of humor. I'm not sure if that is a good thing...Scheckel covers a wide range of subjects, from the human body, earth sciences, space, technology, physical sciences plus several other topics. This book is not a heavy read. It is not a textbook. Scheckel uses a pleasant conversational style and presents information in tidbits that makes this book easy to read. It is written to help both students and adults understand the world around them. Just as he did in the classroom, Scheckel makes learning fun in this book.He has written a column in his local newspaper for many years. This book is a compilation taken from those columns. As such, there are a number of references to places in Wisconsin, but even if you've never been to the land of cheese and never heard of Tomah, Wisconsin, I still think you'll like this book. Highly recommend!

This book is great for anyone - people with a science background, teachers, those with layman knowledge of science topics, and anyone who is just curious about "stuff." The topics range from everyday/common to more in-depth science questions. You can take what you want from the explanations... if you want a very basic explanation, it is there. However my favorite part about this book is that the author offers more scientific details. I'm a biologist, and I truly appreciated the more scientific details of items relating to life sciences and chemistry. Some of the physical science questions got into some details that would require some more research for me to truly understand, but that's great! If one of the topics really interested me, I would have the basics from which to stem my further research. For topics that I didn't care too much about, I got my basic answer and moved on to questions that really struck my attention.If you are a teacher, there are items from any of the science disciplines that can tie into specific lessons/topics. Sometimes giving a simple explanation is the most difficult part of explaining concepts to kids. For others, maybe the specifics are tougher. This book has both, and it can be adapted to many age groups. It is certainly scientific enough for supplementing high school and college lessons. I couldn't put the book down. As a side note, I bought the Kindle copy and there weren't any goofy typos or formatting issues with this book - it was great!

This book would be great for those who have chosen non-science paths, and want to do some catch-up learning. I gave the book a lower score, not because of the content generally, but because the content was too basic for me. Mea culpa. The book is a series of reprints from newspaper columns, so the subject depth is understandably limited. The topic choices are wide ranging and interesting. Kudos to the author for making science understandable and interesting.

I've enjoyed this, some parts more than others. I find it a bit simple for my tastes, but I have to remember that the target audience is high school students, not adults with college science classes. However, there will be some questions I'm sure where I will need simpler instructions.

This book is very well written and is concise in the answers to the questions, that young people and even some adults have occasionally wondered about. I have purchased multiple copies and hand them out to adult friends, teenagers and even little childrenthat can read. I always get a wonderful response to this gift....many men and boys in my family just can't resist reading some of thequestions/answers immediately. Every family should have this book because it's a perfect introduction to the magical world of sciencefor both genders. The book also, provides a good background for various science fair projects over the years; that elementary andhigh school students usually participate in for extra credit or competitions. Engineers, Biologists, Chemists, Mechanics,Physicists all have a basic curiosity about science that usually lasts a lifetime. The author does a great job with the question and answer format, you don't have to read the entire book just one idea at a time. I will continue to surprise someone with this bookas a Unbirthday, UnChristmas, Unspecial occasion gift....just randomly, like a concept in the world of science.

Very nicely done. Broken into specific questions, you can open this and read if you have only 10 minutes or 10 hours. This is science written by a person knowledgeable in the scientific method. You will learn many fun facts and also learn about how science works. Great for any age!

A lot of information to process for sure but these types of books are more for "remembering" and clarification than it is to grasp under one read through. Fun book.

I purchased this to enjoy reflective reading and applying to my life while hoping for some inspiration. I admit that much of the poems considered "great poetry" leaves me scratching my head, and feeling disappointed in not having the type of intellect to grasp the whole or primary message the poet is trying to convey.I purchased this book to repeat the reading of some of the great poems we studied in Literature class in High School. So far I am very pleased with having especially the "giants" to read and I'll, admit, if you won't tell anyone.....primise? ....that I hope with my old age now, I'll finish reading some of these and respond with an enthusiastic, "Ahh! I get it now!"

We ordered this book for my elderly mother in law who was confined to bed the last 8 months of her life. She wanted to keep her mind sharp and her childhood memories included memorizing poetry offered a diversion from just watching TV. I recommend this book to teach kids some of he classics they are not learning any more

I'm proud to be an American because our poets like Walt Whitman. Edgar Allen poe and Emily Dickinson are one of my favorite poets poetry is great

I like the great diversity of poems in this edition and that is part of why I gave it such high marks. I enjoyed a great number of these poems. As one who received a degree in English with an emphasis in creative writing, I can say i have studied and enjoyed many of these poems while also not enjoying a few that have bothered me over the years, LoL.I was happily surprised to find that Abe Lincoln was even in here. I like the poem that was chosen by the editors that he wrote.A few of the poems i sifted through were a few of my least favorite. While I enjoy T. S. Eliot, I do not like The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock! Perhaps it is because I had to spend so much time studying that poem, but it just is not one of my favorites. I also am not a fan of the poem The Red Wheelbarrow! However, as a poet myself, I do respect the man as an author no matter how much i dislike that poem.Some of my favorites like Ars Poetica, Fire And Ice, and The Raven far exceed any poems I do not have a passion for. I highly recommend this book for anyone that loves poetry!

This is a great little book. I was interested in American Poetry and this selection of authors was very good. We have so many talented people in the good ole USA and this makes me proud. I remembered so many of the poems in the book and had not thought about them for years. I heard a quote from an old poem and looked it up online and then searched Amazon and this little book was the dose of poetry I needed. Thanks...

I guess I expected too much. I enjoyed reading some of them, however, isn’t poetry an objective subject!Have several hand held books at home, so I can’t honestly compare.

I've used this anthology in several of my classes. While it doesn't have every poem I'd like to cover (what anthology does, though?) it is an excellent place to start, and a fine way to introduce many of the great American poets to students. Since it's so cost effective, too, I recommend that students purchase their own copy so they can write in it as they dissect some of the poems. All in all, a great little book. Plus it's light, making it easy to carry in a backpack or purse.

I am a WordPress noob and getting further meant learning the languages and tools that were used to construct it. Even though I've bought other books, this is the one that wraps everything together. Probably not the only book you'll ever need, but I've found that true for every programming language I've studied.The book is written well and takes into account that you might not know much when you picked this up. That's something I wish other writers would learn. Often, even books written for beginners have expectations cooked into the writing. The CSS book expects you to know HTML or the JS book expects you'll know programming in another language. Even though I do know other languages and have read other books on these languages - it was nice not to have those expectations thrust on you.The other aspect of the inclusive nature of the material is often, especially in the case of web programming, new programmers learn bits and pieces of the languages as they modify existing sites. They learn the how, but seldom the why. That works until you want to create something new instead of modify what already exists. So they aren't exactly noobs, but they don't have real experience. This book will not only "take you to the next level" but fill in the holes of the levels you already know. That alone can be worth the price.If you decide to go further - to write sites from scratch or create complex web apps, you will need more than just this volume. If you're working with WordPress or other frameworks, this might be all you need to make you an expert in your craft.

I think it could be more practical. I want more examples. Moreover, I want all of the languages to be present even in the smallest examples. Instead of giving me info about syntax - which I can easily find on the web, it would be better if the textbook was based on real life challenges and solutions to see how all these tools work in action. Let's say, short (!) introductions on how to start with all of these tools and then small examples of, for instance, a subscription or subscription form which would include all HTML - actual form, PHP - for MySQL script, JS - for some beautiful dynamic form, CSS - to style the form, MySQL - to store the data from the form. And instead of telling me about booleans and etc, just include them into such examples.

The book as a whole can introduce you to PHP, MySQL, HTML5, etc. but gives outdated advice for their use.The project at the end of the book gives a very wrong direction for building a website.

As I see it, Robin Nixon’s Learning PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, CSS, & HTML5 is the web programming equivalent of a well-stocked toolbox. It’s not going to have what you need for all possible situations as a web programmer, but it packs a lot of utility into a compact space.The core of the book is Nixon’s concise coverage of the basics of PHP, MySQL, and JavaScript. The book then delves into each of these topics in a further chapter or two– giving some further ways to use PHP, or tips on working with MySQL databases. Along the way, Nixon covers many of the most common ways readers are likely to want to use these tools: working with forms, cookies, sessions, and authentication, for example. For such a comprehensive book, it does an admirable job of thoroughly explaining topics (such as AJAX) that other books often skim over with a few code snippets. The coverage of topics as substantial as these in a single book enforces brevity, and might suggest that topics get less coverage than they merit. It is to Nixon’s great credit, I think, that there are far fewer gaps than one might expect. The only really egregious one, to my mind, is that jQuery only merits a brief mention (on p. 420).The second major part of the book moves from the web programming side of things to consider CSS and HTML5. Aspiring web designers should be aware that– despite the book’s occasional claims to be for those who want to learn how to “style and lay out” web pages (p. xxii)– this is not the book from which to learn the nuances of web design with CSS and HTML5. The book’s chapters on CSS could serve as a helpful primer or refresher for the web programmer who needs to do some light web design work, though. The coverage of CSS3 and HTML5 is good; Nixon discusses many of the ways that HTML5 and CSS3 are changing (and often simplifying) the way to do things on the web, from streamlining layout and display to displaying audio and video, while still explaining how to support older browsers.This may not be the final word on web programming– given how much things are in transition at the moment, it is hard to know how any single book could be– but as an introduction and a practical set of tools, this book is recommended.(Full disclosure: I received a free copy of this book from O'Reilly as a part of their Reader Review program.)

Best practices and clarity dictate the use of; 1.) curly braces regardless the number of statements, and 2.) one statement per line. Unfortunately, in this book it was decided (ironically, clarity being sited as a reason on p85) to sometimes omit the use of curly braces if there is only one statement, and, if they fit, to sometimes run multiple statements on one line. As a result, if a beginner wants to use curly braces but is uncertain where to place them, or gets confused as to where one statement ends and another begins, they might set this book down and consult a different resource, which begs the question, why use this book in the first place? Unfortunately, concerning such issues, the apparent cheapness of the publisher has needlessly diminished the quality of this book.Otherwise, compared to a other LAMP/WAMP books, the author does a good job of covering a sizable amount of material in the space given without omitting too much of the details/nuances.In sum, am reluctant to recommend this book on the basis of the apparent need of the publisher to cut costs at the expense of delivering a higher quality product.Steve

I don’t think it’s hyperbolic to call Carlos Hernandez’ Sal & Gabi Break the Universe a mold-breaker. Any expectations you bring to the book based on the publishing line it’s a part of, the genre it falls into, or the age reader it’s aimed at, are likely to be mistaken. The main characters also don’t fall into expected roles from similar stories.Rick Riordan’s various series have been mythology-based, and most of the initial titles in the Rick Riordan Presents line have stayed in that mold while lifting up the voices of marginalized peoples to tell stories from their own cultures. In Sal & Gabi, Hernandez makes full use of his heritage, but there’s almost no mention of mythology or gods. Instead, the author immerses us in modern Cuban-American language and cuisine, and … sleight-of-hand magic? Yep. Sal’s goal is to be a different kind of hero: a magician who brings joy to sick kids stuck in hospital just like the magician who did it for him. There’s no demi-god lineage, no monsters waiting to attack. The little bit of the past that impacts Sal’s present is not a mythological past but rather his own.In fact, there are no fantasy/magic elements at all other than Sal’s sleight-of-hand. The book is, I think, the first under the RRP umbrella to be science fiction. But rather than the far-future we often see in MG and YA books, this is a near future that is recognizably our own world with some hints of advanced (if not openly available) technology. And rather than dystopia, we get loving families, helpful adults, and a sense of community and hope. Even at the book’s darkest moments, and there are a couple, I didn’t feel despondent or mired down.Hernandez also manages to avoid one of the problems I struggle with in the few middle-grade books I’ve read, including the early Percy Jackson books (as much as I loved them): his characters act and sound like thirteen-year-olds. So many MG characters either read much younger than their supposed age, or much older. Reading the banter between Sal, Gabi, and their classmates, I felt like I was listening to my own nieces and nephews.At first, the characters seem like they’re going to fall into traditional roles: Sal as the titular chosen one, Gabi as the too-smart-for-her-peers outcast, Yasmany as the bully and “big bad.” But here again Hernandez subverts expectations. Yes, Sal can do something remarkable (rip holes between universes and pulls things – and people – into his own), but he’s not a Chosen One. Nobody is spouting prophecies about what he can and will do, and even the most scientifically-adept characters in the book don’t know why Sal can do what he can do, or what effect it will have on the fabric of the multiverse. Gabi is smart and sassy and a little bit feared, but also well-liked by her peers. Yasmany starts out as the bully, but he’s neither a snob nor a jerk, and his character shows immediate depth that characters like Draco Malfoy only wish they could have exhibited in the first book of a series. Not only is Yasmany not the “big bad,” the book doesn’t have a “big bad” at all! It’s so refreshing to read a MG/YA book where the conflict is situational rather than staged, and where the tension comes from wondering what new situation is going to complicate things rather than wondering when the hero is going to punch the villain. Other than the initial Sal-Yasmany encounter, which never gets as violent as it threatens to, I’m not sure there’s a single fight scene in the entire book.Sal, Gabi, Yasmany, and their classmates enjoy school, are creative without being falsely eccentric, and are polite even when they’re arguing. Sal’s and Gabi’s parents are involved in their kids’ lives rather than absent, curious and supportive without being pushovers. The other authority figures (principal, custodian, teachers, nurses) are likeable and engaged rather than stern and unyielding roadblocks. Again, there’s that sense of family and community, with good (but not untroubled) relationships almost all around. And people actually apologize when they make mistakes or false assumptions.Anyone who has heard Carlos read any portion of this book at various conventions and reading programs over the past year or two will not be surprised at the amount of humor the book holds. Everything from slapstick to fart jokes to more intricate wordplay is present, but the characters never engage in humor that is denigrating, embarrassing or vulgar. Even the snark and sarcasm teens are known for is delivered gently.Finally, I have to acknowledge how empowering it has to be for Cuban-American kids to read this book and “hear” their own language, the beats and rhythms and slang. There were even bits of dialogue completely in Spanish with no direct translation into English. I don’t read or speak Spanish but was able to pick up context clues and go back later to look up translations, but I was happy those moments exist in the text, because they will reach the intended audience and make those young readers smile and feel represented.Also: the sequel has been announced, and I cannot wait to find out how Sal & Gabi Fix the Universe and what happens before they do.

I love this book. It has been a long time since I carried a big 400-page hardcover with me everywhere I went so I would have more time to read - but this book is that sort of book. It is also the sort of book that I wanted to slow down reading as I neared the end and realized how long I might have to wait to read more about Sal & Gabi and their parade of family and friends.One part Little Brother snark, one part Wrinkle in Time universe weirdness, two parts clever teens finding their way through the challenges life throws our way. I enjoyed learning more about Cuban-American culture. I particularly loved the way the author slowly reveals how things work in the universe he has created.Sal & Gabi will make you laugh out loud - and might even make you wipe away a tear or two. You are in for a great ride, be you an adult with a soft spot for middle-grade fiction (like me) or a kid looking for something new to read.

Sal arrives at his new school in Miami and ends up a frequent visitor in the principal's office. Gabi shows up in the office to represent Yasmany, the other student involved. Perpetual hijinx ensue with an undercurrent of sadness. Sal's mom died yet still "visits." Sal can open portals into other universes. Gabi is the only one outside his family who knows. Sal's school is a very special place where kids can pursue their passions and help each other. The Miami setting with Spanish speaking characters adds the perfect aura. This book is unforgettable. Luckily there will be a sequel.Thanks NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. You have a winner!

I think that this is incredibly important for the Latino kids who weren't raised speaking Spanish for whatever reason (like, say, my kid brother, who is adopted from Guatemala and barely even knows Dora-level Spanish--not for a lack of trying on the part of our parents and myself). Not knowing Spanish doesn't make these kids any less Latino than their fluently bilingual peers, and highlights diversity of families and lifestyles.

These stories relate the amusing world of the fanatic! Harmless, befuddled, confused or misguided, or worldly wisdom that has found a way of life in the hitting of a tiny ball.Actually, these stories could apply to anyone with an obsession which makes the object of your eye, in essence, the world for you. Star Trek weirdos; Star Wars weirdos; people who think collect dolls--really creepy : Well, the point is: if you can't play golf, why bother being human. Therein lies the art of these tales. They apply to everyone. We all become the "Oldest Member" when we drone on and on about some particular interest that tingles our synapses to the very brain stem! And so, through this Sage, we encounter the lives, the loves and the heart-aches of those who play golf--and the infidels who do not!Recommended set of Wodehouse shorts; but the last three are interconnected into a sort of novelette within a book of short stories themed around the only truly human endeavor worth following whilst here on planet earth: Golf!Light-hearted. heart of a goof is vintage wodehouse, the language as perfectly controlled as a tiger woods putt, spicy with deadpan humor and priceless social commentary. unlike one reviewer i found the ensnarement at the beginning of each story, in which the Oldest Member deftly secures his unwilling audience, different each time, and very funny. the use of golf as a metaphor for life is nothing new but wodehouse had a perfect ear for dialog and a sense of character that carries these little stories beautifully into this century. i hate golf and i still loved this book.

A very funny group of short stories by a masterful comic writer. I find myself returning to this book and re-reading it periodically because it is just so enjoyable. And it makes me want to play golf.

PG does it again. Even if you don't play golf, it's a dandy story. I bought it for a golfer pal.

Well read/acted by the narrator.

Magnificent tales told in the inimitable Wodehouse genre. Particularly appealing to golfers or shall I say hackers!

Ok, first off I have to give a disclaimer that I am a rancher in Texas. This book aggravated me. First of all, people in Texas do NOT talk like these book characters. We don't call people feller, eat chicken for breakfast, or get up at 4 am. And no one ever plows a field their first few times on a tractor!!Now that my rant is done, I had high hopes for this book. The story synopsis seemed clever and the book cover is precious. But it just did not do anything for me. I started skimming at 40% because I had started and put it down several times.I never figured out the role of Rusty, and there was limited character development on Ezra and the moms of the sisters. The romance between Cooper and Abby was not fully developed or believable.There was a lot of promise in the beginning with the funeral scene, and arrival of Abby. I would have like more background on her Army experience and how it shaped her personality.Just not my type of writing. Oh, and for the record; Ranchers raise cattle.....they don't grow them.

I usually like Carolyn Brown novels. Granted the "Texas dialogue" is a bit much. I'm from Texas and we don't talk like this. Yet we have some southern drawl but this book goes to the extreme. I liked the book OK but there was just a little too much angst for me. The heroine is so uptight. Just not my cup of tea I guess. Also, these three half sisters who have never worked on a ranch seemed to step right up and take on the jobs without any complaining. Right, I don't think so. The only one of the sisters who had some experience on her grandparents farm I understand that she could step up but the others not so much. For instance if a thirty something with no experience handling cattle, hops on an ATV along with her inexperienced sisters to try to heard cattle that had just stamped in a massive thunderstorm the story becomes unbelievable. Plus if said thirty something is traveling at full speed on this ATV and hits a hole causing her to be thrown over the handlebars face fits into cow manure just gets up and has no injuries to speak of and continues to heard the cattle. I find this unbelievable also. Just sayin'...!! Ms. Brown's novels are usually funny but this one just didn't rise to the occasion. Mostly the book consists of day to day activities on the ranch. Lots of cooking, lots of conversation around the dinner table and lots of stressing about things they can't do anything about. I like to be entertained when I read guess I'm just shallow because this book did not do it.

Kind of liked the book but had to give it a low rating because I am a veteran and I am pretty sure if I was from the south I would be annoyed too. Seriously if she were close enough to see a girl in the window she would have been killed too. Nobody is ever such a good shot that it is requested they go to sniper school and women aren't allowed anyways. E5s wouldn't have as much responsibility as she keeps saying and even more so no officer would be in charge of punishing her and nobody shrubs floors with toothbrush. She wouldn't wear her BDUs (uniform). Lastly 12 years in the army, pretty female, never been married or had a baby? I call impossible. BUT I don't think the book is bade just annoying.

Abby Malloy has grown up knowing who her father is but not knowing him personally. She never even met him. Upon her father's death she is summoned to his funeral and then his ranch. She meets two sisters she never knew she had. It turns out that her father wanted a son to pass his ranch down to. Unfortunately each of his three wives only gave him a daughter. He then gave up on having a son.In his will he stated that the three girls were to live together on the ranch. The last one standing would then inherit the ranch, lock, stock and barrel. Should they leave before the year was up they would be given a cash settlement and forfeit all rights to the ranch. There is also a cowboy, Cooper Wilson, who owns the Lucky Seven ranch next door. There is an instant attraction between Abby and Cooper.This is a wonderful love story about two people fearful of commitment. I loved every minute of this story and was sad for it to end.

This is the second book in the series, but can be read as a stand alone. Abby, Bonnie & Shiloh are 3 sisters, who all had the same father that they never knew, and didn't know about each other until his death. His will stipulated that they all stay in his ranch for a year if any of them wished to own it. Abby is the oldest sister & has just left the Army. Her mother had passed away previously & she has no family & hasn't decided what to do with her life. I love the way she & her sisters form a bond & work together on the ranch, each having their own special skills. Abby quickly falls for a neighboring rancher, Cooper, who is also the local sheriff. Things get hot & heavy immediately - they are drawn to each other from the first meeting. They both fight it because Abby may not be staying. Sweet love story for this couple & hoping we get the stories of the other sisters in upcoming books!

I absolutely loved this story from beginning to end. Abbey and Conner were perfectly matched-IMO. Loved the sisterhood. In the beginning I had my doubts of how this would work out, but I really shouldn't have because Ms. Brown spun the perfect scenario. The funniest part of this story is when the sister got hammered, just too funny. I hope she plans to add to this series, Because I would love to learn more about what happens with the other two sisters.

A good romance, with a little more to it. Very interesting story about 3 strong sisters thrown together under very unexpected circumstances. I enjoyed the way each of the characters was developed and their backgrounds were revealed. The romance between the oldest sister and the sheriff was woven throughout, with lots of ranch work, humor, food, and family history blended in. A good quick read that kept me interested and left a definite opening for sequels (I hope) to learn more about what happens with the other two sisters.

I have an incredibly difficult time finding books I can finish. I read most of this book on a single flight while on work travel and finished it at the hotel that night. It's incredible that I even finish a book -- but all in a day -- that's how good this book is. It's told in first person, which is a preference of mine and reads about in a manner that pleads you to find out what happens. Without ruining the plot I'll say it ends in a very unexpected manor and is an exceptional journey which you'll feel a part of. I loved this book and while this isn't much of a "book" review -- I can only say READ THIS BOOK.

Christopher John Francis Boone is a fifteen year old boy who lives with his father, loves animals, and doesn't understand human emotions-including his own. With help he has learned what makes him feel :) good, like orange crush and licorice laces, and Toby his rat and starring up at the stars at night. And he knows what makes him feel :( bad, like new places, people, too much information, or anyone touching him. But he doesn't understand a lot of the faces that Siobhan from school shows him or Mr. Jeavons the school psychiatrist asks him about. Christopher is different from a lot of other teenage boys and he goes to a special kind of school with other special students. He doesn't like to be compared to them because he thinks a lot of them are stupid, but he's not allowed to use that word or call them that according to what his mother used to say or Siobhan at school, he's supposed to say they have learning difficulties or that they have special needs (but that's stupid too because everyone has learning difficulties). But it is his book so he can write what he wants in it. He's keeping this book for his investigation. He's investigating like Sherlock Holmes and he is investigating a murder. There was a murder on his street of Wellington the big poodle at Mrs. Shears house, which is right down the street from his house and Mrs. Shears is a friend of their's and so was Wellington because Christopher likes dogs. The Police and Siobhan says that killing a dog isn't the same thing as killing a human and they don't investigate or search as hard for things like that because it isn't a human, but Christopher liked Wellington and he thinks dogs are just a good as humans, in fact he likes them more.This is a book written from the first-person point of view of a fifteen year old boy with autism and a very good understanding of facts and numbers (maths). He focuses and relies on the here and now, the real things of this world, and math problems. He doesn't like idioms, similes, metaphors, slang, or imagination. Facts are much more preferred, thank you. The book starts on the night that he finds Wellington skewered with a garden fork on Mrs. Shears front lawn, an event that he is later blamed and questioned about. He determines that he has to find out who murdered Wellington and the life that he thought he knew and was comfortable with swiftly begins to unravel. For a boy who doesn't understand human emotions a lot of events puzzle him and he has a hard time coping and understanding why some people do and choose the things that they do, it's not logical, even if it is human.Mark Haddon does a remarkable job at capturing the mindset and ideas of an individual with autism and expressing it in a way readers can relate to. This book illustrates how some mindsets can be different. Where some individuals focus on feelings, others enjoy literature, and still others are focused on numbers and facts, things that are measurable and recordable, like Christopher. Sometimes different mindsets make certain things easy for individuals to understand while other topics and ideas are alien and something that makes ones' head spin. This is a tale of murder, mystery, a hidden past, and an unsure future of a boy who likes to deal in absolutes and certainties. But all it takes is one variable in the equation to change for the outcome be to a different world entirely.Overall this book is really well-written and an interesting read. Highly recommended for those working with individuals with autism or other neo-neurological learning disabilities. Also a good read for those looking for different perspectives or books that make you question the writer/reporters point of view.

There are many curious things about Mark Haddon’s book, “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, “ besides the title. Foremost, perhaps, is the author. Starting in 1987, Haddon, a Harvard graduate, wrote and illustrated mostly children’s books. During those days he was also a screenwriter, winning numerous awards for both disciplines. In 2003 his first adult novel, “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.” hit the market to great acclaim winning awards in both the adult and children’s categories. His thought processes are mind-boggling.I’d certainly not consider this a children’s book, although it was published in both categories, a fact curious in itself. It is called a mystery novel, although that, too, is strange, because the only mystery is not a scary mind teaser. It’s about a dog that was killed and who-dunnit. Christopher Boone, a 15-tear old boy who describes himself as “a mathematician with some behavioral difficulties”, narrates it. Indeed he is and does, being a genius with Asperger syndrome. That fact is never stated in the book, giving the reader a chance to hear Christopher’s description of his life and thoughts and to cogitate on the actions that take place and how they happen.If one were to go through a thesaurus and select all the adjectives and adverbs that glorify, reviewers in their reviews would have used every one. I’m going to try to abstain from that because there are no modifiers left. But this book has earned them all. Haddon’s story is well told, innovative in its approach, and totally absorbing. I challenge anyone to read it and not be moved beyond words.Christopher Boone finds a dog with a pitchfork through its innards. In his swirling mind of fears, likes and dislikes, trust and distrust, he knows he likes dogs but not people who kill them. It makes sense to him that he needs to find the murderer. Unfortunately most people disagree with him, including his father, but those displeasures mean nothing to him because he has a mission he intends to see through to the end. Unfortunately, the end is the beginning of new mind worms for him to deal with.Haddon is clever in his writing, mixing simple thoughts with complex scientific and mathematical theory. Christopher can wend his way through this maze with ease, even if he becomes somewhat disoriented as he does so. Probably most readers will get lost in the technical details but the author surely knew that. It adds great authenticity to Christopher’s struggle for answers to the many questions and problems that plague him.All I’ll tell you is that you must not fail to read this book. I have been intrigued by the title since I heard about its run on Broadway. Friends who saw it gave glowing reviews for the sets and lighting. So, of course, I had to read the book. Now I have to see the play to offer a glowing review; the book is very good, but not not excellent!The autistic narrator is amazing. You can witness and sympathize with the pain and aggravation. Autism can break up a family. The love and despair demonstrated by the father and mother of the boy is very effective. The boy wants to be loved by cannot be touched!It is a good read, it is never boring or tedious, and occasionally humorous. When Christopher finds the dead dog in the neighbor's yard, killed with a garden fork, he picks up the dog and holds it tenderly. This is the clue for the perfect ending.Now that I am analyzing the recently read book, I have just changed my review to 5*s. Books are read and enjoyed; however, they should also be shared. Ideas and comments of fellow readers can enlighten, 'Wait a minute, I never thought of that! The author brought it all together and I just realized it."The joys of reading!!!
