This is a great book for ideas and methods for embroidering flowers. This isn't a 'how-to' book, but it does tell you which stitches to use. I'm really pleased with how my embroidery turned out. (I'm a beginner)

I attribute the bulk of this to the mindset shifts achieved through Kym’s methods. This book is a must read.

I have been acting for 7 years with the one and only goal of becoming a working actor and never realized how hard it is to get some direction on what to do first, or second, or third.When this book showed up I felt like I was at a stand still. I want to get out of Baltimore and take my talents to LA but didnt know where to start. No one ever told me that trying to get help can sometimes be like pulling teeth, or even worst, trying to get information on auditioning in LA is almost like a secret society. This book is now my new acting bible! I take it everywhere!Buy it! Buy it! Buy it! You wont regret it!I am adjsuting my resume. Excellent Do-It-Yourself style book that explains things as if you were a child, or maybe a teenager. This is the type of zero-BS manual that could be your prime textbook in your first film-making class or semester of film school, to be read just before picking up the camera and beginning shooting your first narrative film.As someone who orders a lot of books and then reads and highlights the first chapter, then puts them on a shelf, I was glad that I was actually able to read this entire book. Most of it is very useful information, and best of all no extra padding. Shows a lot of respect for the reader's intelligence.Definitely one of the best books I've found on making films, out of at least fifty I've read. This is the actual logistics, for instance how to move the camera and how to transition between shots, AND extremely simple explanations of why that way works when other ways don't work as well.Great hand-drawn illustrations and visual explanations, sort of a 1980's style, though the information is more up to date.Should be essential reading for anyone who wants to get involved in film-making or wants to understand how films work. Highly recommended!

After I just received the book, I read though it (read skimmed), it covered stuff I already know as a photographer. But as I got into the video portion the book clearly and quickly explained why you do certain thing when doing video. I misplaced the book for several weeks, and only found it this morning. In the meantime I had been watching youtube tutorials (lots of them) on shooting video. This book even makes more sense to me now.It's a quick read so you think there is not much substance to it, but there is. If you were buying a camera as a gift to someone new to photography, this would be a great book to add as an "accessory". It does not get very technical, and the illustrations are quite simplified, so it is not intimidating when explaining photographic concepts. The best $8 I've spent in a while.

It's good in conjunction with a class. It has the problem that a lot of books like this have, it goes too into detail in some areas, and not enough in others. I suggest Professor Know-it-all's illustrated guide to film and video making by Bill Brown. It covers a lot of the same stuff and is much more fun to read. I will say that this is the bible for film students, so if you want to do the film curriculum, this is the beginning.

If you are looking for a super thorough, technically in depth manual to filmmaking, this is not the book. It is, however, chock full of the basics...and if push came to shove, you could certainly make a decent indie flick off the principles and basics covered in the book. In fact, this was a required text book in one of the film classes I took in College. Like the book suggests, Bare bones...but full of marrow!

I'm currently reading this book for a video class and find it very easy reading, with illustrations that accurately describe the basic fundamentals needed for shooting. At first I thought it looked a little "too" basic, but when you're learning how to capture the right shot for video, it's much nicer to have a book describe it in lay terms rather than industry jargon that confuses you. That being said, it defines some of the jargon for you that is needed for future education courses in Video.

This book is excellent read for potential film students.

A classic. Really bare bones. No fancy photos or spectacular images, just simple diagrams and drawings, but a solid base for filmmakers or videographers. The technology changes, but this basic important elements remain. The real value of the book, in terms of knowledge is invaluable.

For an introductory field guide to film and video, this is as good as it gets. The author condenses years of practical production experience into a short, simple manual. A pleasure to read and return to. I wish all instructional books were so clear and concise.Thank you, Tom Schroeppel.

I did love this book on the first read and was so caught up in the way it described their love of horses that I researched where they were located. I understood from a website I found through the book, that they conducted seminars on their ranch. One of the gatherings was described as examining the mystical/spiritual connection between horse and rider. It looked so interesting that I decided to attend. Over a period of two days in a "spiritual" retreat I attended at their private ranch, I found 2 people who seemed deeply steeped in the bloodsport of bullfighting. They had a very detached view of humanity that I found totally opposite of anything I understand as spiritual or mystical. As an example, when we ate lunch, there was large artwork over the buffet table of a cock fight. It was quite disturbing to me and the first hint of where their beliefs would take us.The professional backgrounds of the author and her daughter, who led the group seminar, dealt with severely psychotic types of patients. It seemed to have desensitized them to normal people and for what most of us spiritual seekers understand as spirituality. As a result, many of our group left feeling like the horses were beautiful, but the people were strangely promoting their seminars in completely the wrong category. They were using their gifts of horsemanship to further the sport that tortures for entertainment . . . bullfighting. This was NOT a spiritual/mystical retreat. It seemed to be a vehicle that fed their PhD egos but not their horses. One that was brought out accidentally, needed to be removed by the SPCA it was so starved.During the last half of the last day, they began to defend their love for the ring. When I understood this, I almost stopped breathing at one point. I cannot remember ever leaving someplace with such a need to shake the dust off my feet and move on. Read the book and you run the risk of supporting efforts to resurrect a terrible sport that is outlawed in many parts of the world now, but for whom this group glorifies as noble.Personally, I prefer autistic children and those who are disabled on the backs of horses, not those looking for blood. We are NOT in the dark ages anymore!There are much better spiritual books through, I would look for them. Such as:Zen Mind Zen Horse, Spirituality Through HorsesTao of Equus.

One of the classics in the field of equine assisted psychotherapy. Provides a solid foundation of the the horse-human bond that is anchored in the evolution of human civilization. Dr. McCormick reminds us that the nature of this bond if as relevant and necessary today as it ever was.

The book is written in a loving manner and some of the stories are heartwarming and inspiring. Most significant for me was the explanation of the connection between developing consciousness through horsemanship as an ancient Atlantean tradition still preserved on the Iberian peninsula

I bought this for a friend of mine who is moving to Ireland and she loves it.

Readers take note: The author is not an American. If you purchase this book, you need to be aware of that and realize that not everyone is eligible to move to and live in Ireland - especially those who are most likely to want to do that, retired Americans. It is not an easy process and you must go through it annually, and since changes to immigration laws in 2015, it is even more difficult - and for many, impossible. I think that should be made very clear in the book description. Lots of helpful info for those eligible to live there, but for most, 90 days is the limit.

I fell in love with the Tao Te Ching when I discovered it nearly 45 years ago. I was so enamored with the book (which I had checked out of the library) that I created a copy for myself on a manual typewriter. (This was back when the book was not readily available in bookstores.) When the Feng-English translation came out, I enjoyed it immensely because it was poetic and accompanied by terrific photographs. It was my favorite for many years. But after years of reading this text as well as many other translations, I have found that Derek Lin's translation and illuminating annotation seems to get closer to the heart of Lao Tzu's message better than any other rendering. It is now my go-to book when I want to recall what Lao Tzu said about a particular topic.

I've read many different translations of this classic text, and recommend doing so to others. Each different translation will give you something different. However, if I'd have to choose only one, or one to start, I'd choose this one. A very readable, clear translation, that still holds close to the more literal ones out there.I also find very helpful the notes that come immediately after each chapter/verse. The notes are highly ordered with numbers pointing to the text.For those with a Kindle: I have this book in print and on Kindle. The Kindle version used to have terrible organisation, with the whole Tao Te Ching being one entry, and I returned it. That is fixed now. There is a proper content page, with a section for each chapter, and a separate entry for its notes. So it is much easier to go back and forth and read favourite chapters when you want it.Highly recommended.

The translator has put a lot of thought into this translation. As I read it, the translation masterfully uses the english language device of the strong verb, which enables the text to carry through its rhythm throughout the 81 chapters.I have just two overall criticisms, about the annotations, and about the purpose of the text. The annotations are more introductory narrative expositions than critical analysis. They are meant to prepare and open the reader to the chapters, not necessarily to elucidate the completeness of each line. To give just one example, chapter 11 discusses , in a nutshell, the nature of activity, creativity, and space, of which the annotations hardly provide an analysis (to give just one example). I would read the chapters as they stand, and look at the annotations only if there is a real question or lack of clarity about the chapters. Reading the other way around, or beginning with the annotations, and then moving to the chapters, risks screwing up the genuine experience of the complexities of the chapters that at the same time are also simple truths.Obviously, an entire world view on metaphysics and cosmology is used or presumed by the original author, and if this were to be defined or discussed in the one page annotations, it would raise the annotations beyond the introductory level for the purpose of which I am understanding them to have been written.Regarding the purpose of the text, it must be kept in mind that this book is a treatise on good government, which means it was written for someone who wants to rule. This makes the text doubly interesting. The book indicates that to rule well, the ruler must know the people s/he governs. This also means that the people, in order to live well, must understand the ruler in his/her different manifestations (see, for example, chapters 17 ff.). So the book must work both ways. More details could have been provided on this, in the foreword or in the annotations.

Derek Lin has performed an outstanding job of helping the Tao to reach out reportedly from a sage Lao Tzu about 2,500 years ago, to the present and still resonate clearly.While the online text found here is missing the annotations that are integral in understanding the translation in today's terms it can be very useful and helpful in that it provides a glimpse for comparison purposeshttp://www.dereklin.com/Tao-Te-ChingOf the ten translations have been reading, I find this to be easiest to follow. Where a meaning differs from some the other translation, in the annotations he explains why.
