Flashpoint. The event of mid 2011 that completely altered DC's timeline to give a very weird reality as well as set up for a new universe altogether. Reading the event itself, Flashpoint, will help give a reader an idea why this world is the way it is. But these mini series are not necessary to Flashpoint itself, they just expand and build on the event and the world itself. This collection has: the three issue, "Abin Sur: The Green Lantern", "Frankenstein and the Creatures of the Unknown", the one shot, "Green Arrow Industries", and the three issue, "Hal Jordan"."Abin Sur: The Green Lantern" is about the green lantern of sector 2814, Abin Sur, assigned, by the Guardians of the Universe, to go to earth and find the white entity to fight a crises spreading across the universe. Abin Sur defies the Guardians, and puts off this monumental quest in order to save earth. He hits a snag and crashes on earth and tells his ring to prepare for a successor. That does not play out as green lantern fans are accustomed to and he is hailed as earth's new champion. This story is really cool. I am biased towards a story that plays out a, "what if" scenario where Abin Sur fights on and Hal remains a test pilot. The cameos by other characters (alien) of the green lantern universe are well used and fun. The only problem with the story is Abin's defiance of the guardians' mission. He tells them off and that he will help earth instead of helping finding something that will save the entire universe, a universe that includes earth! And the guardians did little more than bicker with him about it, instead of, I don't know...sending in more lanterns to get the job done! Uggghhh. This one catastrophic plot issue still does not take away from a fun adventure. Awesome art as well. They choose to model after the Green Lantern movie and it worked out great."Frankenstein and the Creatures of the Unknown" tells the tale of old Frank coming back to fight a great evil rising in the world, the NAZI's. He is used by an American science/military team comprised a few other classic horror movie icons. They also make their way to the modern era just in time for Atlantean/Amazon war. Jeff Lemire knocks this one outta the park and makes me so much more excited to read his run on, "Frankenstein: Agent of Shade", of part of the DCnU. But with this story you get a great one with a cast of characters that do not get too condensed into one dimensionalness given that there are a handful and it's a three issue mini-series. Really gorgeous art and great covers by Doug Manke to give tribute to the mini-series, he drew with crazy-good scribe Grant Morrison, "Seven Soldiers of Victory: Frankenstein."Green Arrow Industries". Oliver Queen is arrogant, speaks his mind, and loves the ladies. He also is the military's biggest weapon producer. Ollie is on the other side of the socio/economic equation in this timeline and he loves his trick bombs! Problem is someone is on his private test facility island, trying to kill him. Good thing this is a one shot but a fun look at Ollie on the other side of things and once again really good art."Hal Jordan". He did not get the ring but he still is the same fearless airplane pilot. He still works for Ferris industries and they still have that on again off again relationship. But when the Amazons attack, he is ready to step up to be the hero he needs to be. Another great story with fantastic art! Powerful ending. Sigh, but two gripes with the plot. First, in all the rest of the Flashpoint mini-series including the series itself, the amazons are never mentioned attacking the United States. That one I can somewhat forgive because maybe it was a sneak attack that happened at the end of Flashpoint so it is happening as the final battle is. But, second, if the Amazons are located in Great Britain, why would they attack the U. S. west coast? The east is kinda less of a trip, plus no Outsider ruled east Asia or Red Tornado protected Japan to fly over. Maybe they felt it the most vital point to hit, maybe they were mass assaulting. Meh, it is not that big of a deal...All in all this collection is the most solid of all the Flashpoint collections. It comes close to edging the Batman collection, but that Batman story is just too great. Awesome stories (a few minor plot complaints) supplemented with some awesome art!

this was an ok read but not great it was a mix of action and story I just was not my type of book on a personal level still a good read though.

Abin sur lives. What if Jordan never got the ring find out in this collection. Fun collection for any dc fan

I really like the new style, but it's a major change from the normal DC universe. Not a bad read and I liked it.

Great graphics. Multiple stories.

Originally published in single magazine form in Flashpoint: Abin Sur-- the Green Lantern 1-3, Flashpoint: Frankenstein and the creatures of the unknown 1-3, Flashpoint: Green Arrow industries 1, Flashpoint: Hal Jordan 1-3 a world where hal jordan never became the green lantern and where abin sur survives to become a white lantern and repair the damage done to the flashpoint earth

2011's Flashpoint was the main event in which was about changing DC's 70+ years of continuity and storytelling into an new timeline, which would become "The New 52". The main event dealt with the primary story and important aspects of what happened, and for the most part it worked, yet it left many of the supporting characters a bit 1-dimensional in there causes. "World of Flashpoint" are the stories from the support characters to give better insight on their actions. These books are mostly supplemental and are not needed at all to enjoy the main event. So it's suggested you read the main Flashpoint event first, and if you want to further your knowledge on the world and characters, then you may decide with books to do so.WORLD OF FLASHPOINT: GREEN LANTERN collects "Abin Sur: The Green Lantern #1-3", "Frankenstein and the Creatures of the Unknown #1-3", "Green Arrow Industries" One-shot issue, and "Hal Jordan #1-3"."Abin Sur: Green Lantern" is about the idea that Abin Sur never died his space craft, so his ring never passed on to the earthling Hal Jordan. Due to the war on earth with Wonder Woman and Aquaman, the guardians want Abin to go to earth to retrieve The White Entity that is the White Lantern to save the universe, while Abin has other plans. What we get is Abin's point of view of being a GL and the ideals he stood for in life. And yes, Sinestro is in this Flashpoint world...and he's still just like his old self. Seeing as there isn't too much material published on Abin, it's quite interesting to give him the spotlight for once, which surprised me. It's not great, but it's interesting. The overall look and feel of the GL in Flashpoint is identical to the Green Lantern movie release last year. Are they implying the movie as reference to the FP event? Maybe."Frankenstein and the Creatures of the Unknown" is about the time period of World War II and the creation of monsters (a vampire, werewolf, and a sea creature) paired with Frankenstein to stop the Nazi's. Then the story flashes forward to the present FP event where the team has to find out what's going on in the world and hopefully stop the treat. Had I never read or heard of Jeff Lemire after the New 52, I probably wouldn't have cared about these issues. But since Lemire is doing a great job on the current Animal Man Vol. 1: The Hunt (The New 52) and Frankenstein, Agent of S.H.A.D.E. Vol. 1: War of the Monsters (The New 52), then this worth checking out. What we get is a great monster team book, that's a great ode to monster films creatures. Not a spectacular story, but probably the best part of the book."Green Arrow Industries" is about Oliver Queen where he's a weapons maker of super-villains weapons for the public. Here he's just made the "Green Arrow Missle" to go into production for future wars. This all changes when the factory gets attacked, with Ollie on his own to defend his property and life. A decent story, but nothing special. Ollie is still the play-boy here, but he has none of his fighting skills, so he plays off of his gadgets. We also see some of the social issues GA is known famous of dealing with in his comics. But overall, it's a fairly average story."Hal Jordan" is about our favorite lantern warrior if he never achieved his power ring, making him just another jet pilot, which is pretty much the whole summary of the story. He's still the Jordan we know and love, just without the ring. This makes it an average story. Most GL fans who've been following Geoff Johns run on GL won't find anything new here, but new readers might get a good summary about Hal Jordan the man, over Hal Jordan the Green Lantern. Now here's the setback in the book. Unlike the other WOFP books, in that, I consider this (and Wold of Flashpoint: The Flash)the most supplemental of the books. What I mean is the books like Flashpoint: The World of Flashpoint Featuring Batman,Flashpoint: The World of Flashpoint Featuring Superman,Flashpoint: The World of Flashpoint Featuring Wonder Woman, and Flashpoint: The World of Flashpoint Featuring The Flash had characters like Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, and even Reverse-Flash which all were included in the FP main event and had some time to shine in that book, all the characters here in WOFP:GL had little to any impact add to the event. Whereas Batman was the costar of the event, so reading more about him in his book is compelling. Seeing as Wonder Woman and Aquaman were the prime disaster makers in the event, so reading how they got to that point and why they're at each others throats is intriguing to read in their book. Abin Sur, Frankenstein, Green Arrow, and Hal Jordan offer little to the event, so I wasn't as enthralled to read about them, I admit. Abin Sur has a mere cameo and one sentence in the main event; Jordan is summed up really well in less then 2 pages in the main event; the only appearance of Green Arrow is the GA missile in one shot; and Frankenstein and crew are not even in the main event altogether. This makes WOFP:GL (and again, WOFP:The Flash) the least interesting of the books. Not at all bad, just if your one that wants some character connection to the event, it's not here.WORLD OF FLASHPOINT: GREEN LANTERN is not a bad book at all. It's fairly well-written and well drawn, and it has plenty of content for your money. But compared to the other WOFP books, it and The Flash are the least interesting or impactful of the bunch, and no story here really stands as must reads. So I recommend you pick this up when you have the other 4 books first and, of course, if you're a Flashpoint completionist.

The idea of Flashpoint is interesting but this particular collection shows both sides of the good/bad with the idea. The lead story featuring Abin Sur is really good both art and story. While it was predictable it was good to see Abin being a hero we heard he always was. The Frankenstein story was simply a pale version of Hellboy set in this new DCU. The art was mundane and the plot was weak. The Green Arrow one-shot was beyond bad. The artist did a terrible job of properly displaying any of the characters ages as they all looked like they were in their early 20s. The Hal Jordan tale was touching but didn't seem any different than the normal DCU version. Overall, a roller coaster that equals out to be an average book.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of April 2019: You could label The Parisian as historical fiction, but it seems silly to limit it that way. This is just a great novel, and Isabella Hammad is an ambitions, sensitive, and abundantly talented writer. The Parisian is the story of Midhat Kamal. We first meet him in 1914 Marseilles, while he is on his way to Montpelier to attend medical school. He is also about to fall in love for the first time. Within a year, he is studying in Paris, absorbing the culture; but as a Palestinian living in France, he is always an outsider. Eventually, Midhat returns to his hometown of Nablus, where his father, a wealthy textile merchant, rules his days, and where Britain now rules the land. Midhat must answer to his father’s expectations at the same time that he is trying to make his way in a changing Palestine—and still there are tendrils that reach back to France. The Parisian is, almost unbelievably, a debut novel—a moving personal story set against a sweeping historical backdrop—and Isabella Hammad is an exciting new voice in literature. --Chris Schluep, Amazon Book Review

Praise for The ParisianA 2019 Barnes & Noble Discover SelectionAn April IndieNext Selection“Reminiscent of Michael Ondaatje’s The English Patient and Sebastian Faulks’s Birdsong, 27-year-old Isabella Hammad’s epic debut novel surpasses both in its scope.”―New York“Stunning…a lush rendering of Palestinian life a century ago under the British mandate and a sumptuous epic about the enduring nature of love.”―Vogue“In her exceptional debut, Hammad taps into the satisfying slow-burn style of classic literature with a storyline that captures both the heart and the mind….Richly textured prose drives the novel’s spellbinding themes of the ebb and flow of cultural connections and people who struggle with love, familial responsibilities, and personal identity. This is an immensely rewarding novel that readers will sink into and savor.”―Publishers Weekly (starred review)“An assured debut novel… closely observed and elegantly written.”―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)“A hugely accomplished historical sweep of a book… a novel of immense skill and confidence.”―Guardian“The Parisian is a gripping historical novel, a poignant romance, and a revelatory family epoch. Above all, it is a generous gift. There is a kind of joy that can hold not only pleasure, but struggle, and even sadness. This novel tells that kind of joyful story, and evokes that kind of joy in the reader.”―Jonathan Safran Foer“The Parisian is a sublime reading experience: delicate, restrained, surpassingly intelligent, uncommonly poised and truly beautiful. It is realism in the tradition of Flaubert and Stendhal – everything that happens feels not so much imagined as ordained. That this remarkable historical epic should be the debut of a writer in her mid-twenties seems impossible, yet it's true. Isabella Hammad is an enormous talent and her book is a wonder.”―Zadie Smith“The Parisian is extraordinary―wise, ambitious, and lavishly rewarding. With luminous prose and rare compassion, Isabella Hammad offers her readers an absorbing story of war and identity, of love and independence, of hope and history. It’s an astonishing novel, heralding the arrival of a major talent.”―Bret Anthony Johnston“The Parisian is a lushly imagined, beautifully written, expansive powerhouse of a debut. Isabella Hammad is a great new voice.”―Nathan Englander"An exquisite, intricate and wise novel. I was utterly gripped from the first page until the last. This sweeping, historical epic marks the arrival of a wonderfully gifted author. Isabella Hammad is a marvel and The Parisian is an unforgettable read."―Irenosen Okojie“With masterful lyricism and unflinching insight, The Parisian captures the personal passion and political violence of a nascent nation’s struggle for independence. Hammad has written a profound and intoxicating epic, brimming with unexpected, vivid imagery and unforgettable characters. Hers is a fresh voice of the first order.”―Bradford Morrow“A model of what the short story can do…[A] most ingenious and openhearted work.”―David Gates on Isabella Hammad’s “Mr. Can’aan,” winner of the 2018 Plimpton Prize

Review

"Much is said about using the very best ingredients to make the very best food, but few can boast having the undisputed queen’s voice in their head when shopping or preparing a dish… Marcella’s blues-singer voice is as clear in this indispensable tome as it was when we shared lunches over the years. Her wit, her supreme and hilarious sarcasm and most of all her complete confidence in choosing the precise and exact best ingredients from the infinite number of things available to the modern cook make this book the perfect handbook to carry shopping everywhere and anywhere." (Mario Batali)"This book serves as a warm tribute to Marcella, who had passion and high expectations for sourcing the best ingredients for her soulful cuisine. A timeless reference for any serious home cook.” (Daniel Boulud)"An indispensable reference volume forprofessional and home cooks." (Publishers Weekly)"Marcella Hazan inspired a generation … This little volume offers a treasury of lifetime observations to serious, inquisitive cooks.” (Booklist)"INGREDIENTI isn’t so much a cookbook as it is a manual, with evocative descriptions, about choosing even commonplace ingredients with care... The small white volume epitomizes Marcella’s lifelong devotion to simplicity.” (Danica Kirka Associated Press)"A wonderful, practical and deeply poignant book... the perfect retroactive companion to [Marcella's] cookbooks. Ingredienti is also laced with occasional asides from Victor, which come like beautiful footnotes to their long life together." (Amy Scattergood Los Angeles Times (Cookbook of the Week))"A compact trove of sound, personal advice about selecting, storing and using produce, condiments, cheese, cured meat and other marketbasket essentials."  (Florence Fabricant The New York Times)"Leave it to Marcella to help me see standby ingredients in a whole new light... you'll feel like you're rubbing elbows with her in the kitchen." (Anna Roberts PopSugar)"A new little handbook from an old master... you will find bushels of guidance to help make you a better cook... Hazan's words stay in the head. They give steady encouragement to the hand reaching for the glory of the season." (Debbi Snook Cleveland Plain Dealer)"A simple, modest summary of how to choose, prep, and store a selection of Italian [food]... it got me thinking." (Eugenia Bone Wall Street Journal)

Not a cookbook, but a book for cooks. The concept of food, it's history, and how it becomes, are far more important than a mere recipe. I have been cooking almost 47 years now and, for the most part, recipes are behind me now. Technique is embedded. It is the ability to envision a meal from what is at hand, what is offered in the market, and what the seasons hold for me that raises the experience of making and sharing food past the point of mere cooking and towards artistry. This book offers an approach to creating food, something at once so ethereal, so fleeting, to an experience as old and profound as our history allows. So read about the reverence for food and its components from an old hand. Learn that, whether you prepare Italian or Japanese or whatever food you eat, that the common thread is your knowledge and abiding honor of the meaning you give to food and that food gives to you.

Whether you should purchase this book not will depend on why you are buying the book. If you are a fan of her work, as I am, then you definitely want this book. I own every book written by Marcella Hazan. Her comments and opinions are a joy to read; and I love her emphasis on real, unpretentious Italian cooking. However, if you are thinking you will learn new insights about Italian ingredients or that this book has recipes then you may be disappointed. There are no recipes and the information contained can be had in other sources. Having said that; if you love Marcella's candor and strong opinions then this is a must buy book. The culinary world lost a true advocate for honest cooking and tradition..

Each chapter discusses an individual ingredient, spinach, parmesan cheese, pasta, anchovies, etc. and describes how to find the best ones, suggestions for simple preparations and her own bias for and against how to use them. It's delightful. I plan to buy more copies for gifts for my friends. I have it by the bed and read one or two chapters each evening. This is NOT a cook book.

"Ingredienti" surpassed my expectations. And I expected a lot from Marcella and Victor Hazan.I have a pretty good working knowledge about ingredients and cooking, having spent a fair amount of time cooking and reading about such things over the years, but, still, there is much to be learned in this book.I also found this a touching tribute to her by her husband, friend, and partner for sixty years, Victor.

I received this small, but rather thick, book which is chock full of information about vegetables eaten in Italy as well as here. Don't be put off by the fact that there are no recipes. Each vegetable is so finely described that you ( well, me) will come away from reading with a firm grasp about how to shop and use each one. A perfect addition to my cookbook library which will will teach me what I need to brush up on. Grazie, Marcella.

This is such a charming book! I originally bought it as a gift, but I liked it so much that I kept it for myself. Reading it makes me feel like I'm sitting at the kitchen table with the author, sharing a cup of coffee and swapping culinary know-how. It's alphabetized according to ingredients, and includes vegetables, meats, spices, and other items. Marcella shares her wisdom and experience regarding each ingredient - whether it's storing/handling, prepping, or cooking it. This is a great little reference to keep on my cookbook shelf!

This is a lovely little book which expounds on notes left by Marcella Hazan. Although useful in term of cooking, it is a fun read even if without the time in the kitchen. I have been cooking fairly complicated Italian dishes for 30 years and learned a lot. I am giving it as a gift also

When I first saw this book, I knew it would be a good gift for Veronica, my son's fiancee. She's an excellent cook and this book is everything you want to know about ingredients used in Italian cooking.

Luckiest Man: The Life and Death of Lou Gehrig, by Jonathan Eig

Amazon.com Review

Lou Gehrig started his professional baseball career at a time when players began to be seen as national celebrities. Though this suited charismatic men such as Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio, Gehrig avoided the spotlight and preferred to speak with his bat. Best known for playing in 2,130 consecutive games as well as his courage in battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (a disease that now bears his name), the Iron Horse that emerges from this book is surprisingly naïve and insecure. He would cry in the clubhouse after disappointing performances, was painfully shy around women (much to the amusement of some of his teammates), and particularly devoted to his German-immigrant mother all his life. Even after earning the league MVP award he still feared the Yankees would let him go. Against the advice of Ruth and others, he refused to negotiate aggressively and so earned less than he deserved for many seasons. Honest, humble, and notoriously frugal, his only vices were chewing gum and the occasional cigarette. And despite becoming one of the finest first basemen of all time, Jonathan Eig shows how Gehrig never seemed to conquer his self-doubt, only to manage it better. Jonathan Eig's Luckiest Man: The Life and Death of Lou Gehrig offers a fascinating and well-rounded portrait of Gehrig, from his dugout rituals and historic games to his relationships with his mother, wife, coaches, and teammates. His complex friendship with Ruth, who was the polar opposite to Gehrig in nearly every respect, is given particularly vivid attention. Take this revealing description of how the two men began a barnstorming tour together following their 1927 World Series victory: "Ruth tipped the call girls and sent them on their way. Gehrig kissed his mother goodbye." Eig also shares some previously unknown details regarding his consecutive games streak and how he dealt with ALS during the final years of his life. Rich in anecdotes and based on hundreds of interviews and 200 pages of recently discovered letters, the book effectively shows why the Iron Horse remains an American icon to this day. --Shawn Carkonen

From Publishers Weekly

Although his record of playing in 2,130 consecutive Major League baseball games (from 1925 to 1939) was eventually broken in 1995, Gehrig is still remembered as one of the sport's greatest figures. But Eig, a Wall Street Journal special correspondent, shows that the life of the"Iron Horse" wasn't quite as squeaky clean as Gary Cooper portrayed it to be in the 1943 film Pride of the Yankees. Still, the blemishes are strikingly minor in comparison to those of today's star athletes: the worst anyone can really say about Gehrig is that he didn't like spending money, or that sometimes he'd just barely appear in a game in order to continue his streak. This meticulous biography also tracks the Yankee first baseman's close family ties and the tensions between his German immigrant mother and his publicity-savvy wife, as well as Gehrig's friction with teammate Babe Ruth. There's a certain monotony to the seasons during Gehrig's peak years, but Eig manages to find lively anecdotes. Moreover, the final chapters, in which Gehrig slowly dies from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, present his story's medical aspects with powerful sensitivity. Holding its own against recent high-profile baseball bios (e.g., Richard Ben Cramer's portrait of Joe DiMaggio), Eig's book reminds readers that Gehrig's accomplishments are inseparable from the dignity of his character. A superbly told tale of the life and death of one of baseball's all-time greats. If you thought you'd heard everything there is to know about this powerful yet gentle man, grab a copy of this book and start reading. From Lou's early family life, through high school and then into baseball at Columbia and finally the Yankees, Gehrig's story is compelling, star-studded and wonderfully presented. His tragic battle with ALS, still at an age where he could easily have rewritten baseball's record book, unfolds in heartbreaking detail. Through it all, we see what an amazing soul Gehrig was, and how his understated lifestyle compared with most of the ballplayers of yesterday and today set him apart. Jonathan Eig's treatment of this amazing story makes this a biography for the ages. Again, no matter how much you thought you knew about Lou Gehrig, even after seeing the Gary Cooper film about his life, you'll enjoy and learn from this fine book.

This is a terrifically well researched and well written biography. Especially the way the author has corrected various previously published accounts of Lou Gehrig's life and times. The reader is drawn in to Lou's psyche exceptionally deep; his interaction with his teammates, for example, including and especially Babe Ruth. And the author knows baseball too, and understands the situations where a double or home run is just another home run (like where your team is already up ten runs in the eighth inning), and where it's a game changer. The included photos don't display on the Kindle as well as a reader would like, as you already know.I highly recommend this book. I've read several biographies of Gehrig which don't do much more than recite his baseball career.Did you know that there is actually no recording of Lou's final farewell speech? But the author was able to painstakingly piece together what Lou actually said by reviewing what the dozens of reporters wrote afterwards. The stadium, including the press box, was dead silent as Lou spoke. No one thought to record the speech.

This book is many things. I came to it knowing almost nothing about Lou Gehrig other The the iconic facts. Obviously I knew his fate before starting the book, but the author’s ability to describe his life and times put that into the background until toward the end. Then the haunting knowledge of what was to come seeped in. I wanted to believe “50-50” along with Lou.It is a heartbreaking story in many ways but it is poignant, uplifting, fun, heartwarming, historically interesting, and much more. Thank you Jonathan Eig for allowing me to get to know this outstanding person.

When Amazon emailed me about this book as a daily deal, I realized that I didn't know anything about Lou Gehrig except that he was one of the Yankee superstars and that he died of Lou Gehrig's disease. So, I gave it a try and I'm glad that I did. This is such a well written book that I felt as though it were the story of a dear friend and his death. I cared about him in a way I didn't expect. For example. during the time before he got married, when, according to the author, Gehrig wanted to meet women but was so shy he couldn't get up the nerve to talk to them, I wanted to grab him and introduce him to my single friends. I liked Lou a lot.I've always felt put off by Babe Ruth, he was just too drunk, too much of a womanizer, too much of a glutton for me to care much about him. But in this book, I even started to see the caring side of Ruth and actually ended up liking him a bit. A totally unexpected result of reading this book. Some reviewers seem to feel that there is too much about ALS and not enough about baseball. I would have liked more about ALS and less play-by-play, but that's a hard call to make and I think the author did a good job keeping a middle course.I am not giving this 5 stars because of the formatting errors/typos on the Kindle edition. In many places a long quote starts correctly indented than becomes unindented making you have to really work at figuring out what is a quote and what isn't. Towards the end I was so moved that I was crying, then i'd hit one of these "is this a quote or what" places and get annoyed. Maybe that was good because it stopped my crying, but ...

Lou Gehrig was one of baseball’s greatest players, yet for so long the tragedy of his short life has been a notable characteristic of his legacy. With the discovery of personal letters to and from one of his doctors the normally reserved Gehrig provides special insights to his life. The wonderfully crafted narrative includes comments from players that played with and against him, and some were interviewed during their final years. A fine range of other sources all combine to construct Gehrig as a humble man with incredible baseball talent. He was grateful for all that life gave him and it is impossible to not be inspired by such a remarkable person.Nicholas R.W. Henning – Australian Baseball Author

If you consider yourself to be an open-minded white person who is interested in understanding race in America today, read this book! Better yet, choose it for your book club, as it will spark really lively and boundary-busting conversations. Allen writes in a personal, frank voice that is vulnerable and pained at times, frustrated and angry at others. She pulls no punches as she walks readers through a contemporary reality that is a difficult blend of Millennial challenges and enduring racism. She doesn't provide any easy answers, but tells the complex stories of dozens of real people who are navigating their 20s and 30s in the best way they can. I found myself breathing deeply as I read, in order to stay with the discomfort of recognizing my white privilege in these pages.... Now I have to go form a book group!

Reniqua Allen's debut book, It Was All a Dream, is an eye-opening work on racial disparities. In flowing, clear prose, Allen intersperses objective narratives, first-person observations, and subject interviews to explain why "equality" is not a given in contemporary America. Despite the errant beliefs of many people that discrimination no longer exists and that minorities would succeed more if they just pulled themselves up by their boot straps, Allen shows how hundreds of years of prejudice continue to weigh heavy on the shoulders of Black Americans in particular--and how that prejudice continues in insidious forms today.

Amazing book that provides an insightful look into black millenialhood. Ms. Allen provides a voice to a generation in the most beautiful manner.

The book itself was well written and kept you reading. It open your eyes to what this generation really thinks.

Very engaging read on a very important and under-reported topic. A must read.

Public-facing writing about millennials is plentiful and varied: "Millennials are selfish;" "Millennials are tech wizards/start-up geniuses/egregiously wealthy;" "Millennials aren't politically engaged;" "Millennials are post-race and possess fewer biases than previous generations." However, rarely are millennials disaggregated along axes of social difference. Moreover, many observations attributed to millennials at large are actually mined from the lives of white, upper-middle-class millennials. How then should we understand the social location of Black American millennials? This question is of particular importance since many came of age during the first decade of the 21st century. That moment, marked by the election of the United States' first Black president, was once deemed the dawn of a new post-racial era. The Movement for Black Lives has shown that such a statement is far from true...Allen begins with the 'American Dream,' the promise that determination, faith, and hard work make upward mobility and economic abundance accessible to those who work diligently for it. Do Black millennials believe in it? Have they found it applicable to their lives? Relying upon interviews with Black millennials across the country from a variety of regional, ethnic, class, educational, and professional backgrounds, Allen draws a portrait of Black millennial life that unveils how myriad policy, laws, and institutional practices have made the American Dream inaccessible to the majority of Black American millennials. The book's strongest chapters are the ones on student debt, the working-class, and housing. In these chapters, Allen deftly integrates historical analysis, quantitative data, and ethnography to show how inaccessible higher education has become for Black millennials; those who do manage to complete undergraduate degrees still find themselves drowning in debt and unable to cross the threshold into the middle-class. Allen discusses the importance of possessing generational wealth in establishing economic security, something that has eluded Black Americans for centuries. In her discussions about housing, she critically examines how the global recession of 2008 functioned as a devastating depression for Black American communities; not only were they victims of subprime mortgage lending, but they also lost the majority of their wealth when the housing market turned.I expected a few chapters to be a bit bolder, particularly the chapter on love and the chapter on politics and activism. The former didn't discuss how much colorism and anti-Black bias permeate dating life and shape notions of desirability and the latter was too focused on the three interviewees/didn't provide enough analysis and observation of the wider context. I also wish that there had been more discussion of why Black immigrants and their children tend to fare better than multigenerational Black Americans in the labor market. The stereotypes of multigenerational Black Americans as "lazy," "lacking ambition," or suffering from "broken households" conveyed by some interviewees weren't addressed and debunked. The chapter on Hollywood felt a bit out of place in the text as a whole; I wonder whether a chapter about arts and culture more broadly would have tied in more seamlessly.Nonetheless, the text serves as a great primer to understanding the depth of inequity in the current moment. It does a great job of unpacking the structural without obscuring personal narratives. In this way, Allen *visceralizes* the data. 'It Was All a Dream' would fit very well into the readings of an Introduction to Sociology or Introduction to American Studies course.

A true masterpiece that encompasses the REAL DEAL trauma that the diaspora of Black Americans are suffering as much today as we have been since the beginning; when we were brutally forced here from our original homeland. A powerful validation that we're not crazy; we're living in a dream that has traumatized us to our core! And the only way we can survive is to wake up. This book evokes a new call to action; a realization that if we're ever going to heal, we MUST do it from within and stop waiting for, fighting for, organizing for, etc... the things around us (outside of us) to change. We must empower ourselves - from within! WE MUST WAKE UP! No problem can be solved at the level of the problem. This BAD dream will end when the dreamers wake up! No one is excluded.

I run white ally group in my school and I highly recommend you get copies of this book into your school libraries and into the hands of any people interested in understanding the socially constructed "black experience" today.Very readable and relatable this well written book makes for a great group read.

This book by Tim Richardson is certainly a great read. Well worth the read and is great value for money.

Excellent!

For garden lover, i found it well written, and explain... I love it... A book I like to have it next to me!

"The New English Garden" by Tim Richardson might easily be mistaken for just another lushly photographed coffee-table book describing well-designed gardens, the "garden porn" that gardeners love to curl up with during the cold winter months when they dream of spring. But "The New English Garden" differs from and is superior to most other books portraying gardens in two ways. First, author Tim Richardson is a knowledgeable garden historian who chose the gardens in his book to illustrate a larger story of the direction in which British garden design has been moving in the past decade or so. This aspect alone places his book a level above the standard "portrait of a garden" collections which simply showcase beautiful gardens of a region or type. However, this book is different in another, even more important way: Richardson is part of a new movement in Britain that is attempting to move gardening from its status as merely a hobby or technical profession to a more widely respected art form, on a plane with visual art, music or writing. This movement insists that for gardening to be taken seriously as an art form, it must be subject to the same type of artistic criticism that differentiates between good and better art, the kind of constructive criticism that pushes artists to improve their work.So after Richardson describes each of the twenty-five gardens in this book and relates why he deems it significant, he then identifies both the most successful aspects of each garden, as well as any weaknesses he perceives. And this last bit is where the big difference lies.It is actually slightly shocking to read something that is not 100% positive about someone's garden, when usually garden write-ups are limited to upbeat, admiring descriptions of both gardens and gardeners. Richardson's suggestions for improvement are of a wholly constructive kind, pointing out specific areas that he believes could be improved or an overall strategy that could make the garden even better than it currently is. But it nonetheless takes a certain amount of chutzpah to say of the Prince of Wales' garden that "the garden at Highgrove does not quite hang together as a coherent whole." And he bluntly states of Piet Oudolf's garden at Scampston Hall that "the overall structure of the new walled garden is a failure."This type of plain speaking will undoubtedly benefit gardening as a whole, as long as it is reserved for serious artistic efforts at gardening - not criticizing well-meaning amateur gardeners' efforts. But just because "The New English Garden" was intelligently-written and added to my understanding of modern gardening doesn't mean it wasn't still a beautiful book with lavish garden photos to drool over. The photographs of Pettifers, Temple Guiting and Gresgarth were particularly magnificently flower-filled. And the photos of some of the gardens planted in the last decade's New Perennials (grasses and large drifts of perennials) style also showed an attractive vision of what these gardens look like at their best. But, in keeping with Richardson's desire for serious criticism, I will point out a couple of things that would have made the book better: First, there sometimes seems to be a disconnect between Andrew Lawson's photos and Richardson's text. One example: Richardson asserts that "perhaps the most successful part of the Tilbury House garden is the walled kitchen garden to the south-west," and describes it at length in appetite-whetting terms, but I could not find a single photo of this "most successful part" of the garden, which was quite disappointing.Another small quibble is the lack of garden maps or plans, which are unfortunately all too rare among garden books. I spent quite a bit of time puzzling out the overall layout of each garden -- something Richardson tries to describe, but not always with success. A picture is worth a thousand words. But these points aside, "The New English Garden" is one of the most important garden books to be published this year in terms of garden writing, and certainly among the more beautiful. This is a book that I will look at many times and read carefully, again and again, in my search for understanding of what makes great gardens great.(For a more detailed review, including photos, please visit my blog: gardenfancy.blogspot)

Beauty is something universally admired by gardeners, as that is a fundamental part of their vocation, and what a supremely beautiful book this is. Written by Tim Richardson and photographed by Andrew Lawson, Jane Sabire and Rachel Warne, it is an intimate tour of 25 visually spectacular English gardens, all of which were either made or re-designed in the last ten years. Hence the “new” in the title. Weighing in at more than five pounds, it consists of 300-plus pages and is ten by twelve inches, and so is a solid coffee table book that demands to be left out for anyone interested to peruse. Each garden is covered in ten to fifteen sumptuous pages, and you could do much worse that to study one garden each day with your morning coffee, in these dark days of late fall and early winter.English gardening is, at the present moment, at a very interesting inflection point. The 1990s saw the zenith of the “tapestry tradition”, the Arts & Crafts, color-blending movement and the beginning of a less floral, more naturalistic wave, led by the Dutch and German designers. Prominent among them is Piet Oudolf, for example and his famous “Dutch Wave”, that gives greater prominence to the whole plant and its structures in all seasons, than to its floral expression at one brief moment of glory. This new style has been met and matched in England by a more relaxed English style of gardening associated with the gardening legend Beth Chatto and others, in what is called the New Perennial Movement. And recently, there has been a reaction against both of these new waves and a return to a more traditional and familiar English style and vernacular. So this book fascinatingly explores this very vital moment of design flux, that is so very rich in inspiration and possibility. Thoughtful and amazing plant combinations and re-combinations are beautifully presented and detailed. Often a garden profile includes pictures of the garden in late autumn or winter, rimed in frost or dusted with an early light snowfall, and how beautiful these pictures are. The colors and the flowers are sculpturally subtracted, emphasizing the inherent beauty of the compositional plant forms, surely a revealing test of any garden’s underlying design. To me, these are some of the most interesting pictures in this book. There are some very famous gardens presented here, such as Christopher Lloyd’s Great Dixter and the Prince of Wales’ amazing garden at Highgrove, but it also presents the brand new massed plantings of the Olympic Park in London from 2012, as well as the sublime Gresgarth (by Arabella Lennox-Boyd) and Bury Court (by Piet Oudolf). It would be heaven to spend the last two weeks of May and the first two weeks of June some year, touring the great gardens of England, and certainly garden tourism is strongly on the rise there. But for now this wonderful book will do. It is sure to be on many Christmas lists and will be enjoyed by anyone with an eye for the beautiful potential of the garden. It is one of those great gifts that is so much fun to give and even more fun to receive.
