If you thought the Church was a simple collection of people trying to worship the same God that has always existed and with the same understanding of what it is all about, then read this book. It is a superb narrative of the evolution of the Church over centuries and it makes clear the complexity of the Church and its structures today. Superbly researched and written in a way that captures the reader, even though some of the names of the major players are difficult and similar and very ancient. This objective recounting of the story of the Church as it developed and sought to clarify complex theological issues is very helpful for those who do have some misgivings about some of the taught Mantras of our own day. The author has done a marvellous job in making the debates and the philosophical issues that impacted on Church doctrinal developments comprehensible and he does it in a non judgemental and objective way. Our beliefs are not simple, never have been, never will be. Our God is not understandable in the way we would like Him/her to be.

This is the second I have read this book and I enjoyed it more the second time reading it. It is dense with information and the language is on the esoteric side. It explains the struggles, decisions and life of the early church. The author does a good job of bringing to life important moments and issues of the early church using carefully chosen quotes and examples from ancient texts.

Chadwick's history of the early church is widely regarded as the standard work on the subject, and it's easy to see why. It's a dense, dry read, jostling with facts and ideas about the development of Christianity between the ministry of Jesus and the Iconoclasm Controversy in the Early Middle Ages that marks the sundering of the Eastern and Western Churches.Chadwick explores the complex interplay of social, political, and doctrinal forces that worked together to drive the history of the church forward. It's not easy reading and I wouldn't recommend it as a place to start. It greatly benefits from some familiarity with the historical context, particularly the late Roman Empire, and familiarity with the core disputes of early theology, such as the early Trinitarian controversies and the conflict between Catholic and Gnostic forms of Christianity.By and large, the facts are presented without much context of big-picture-building. I was frustrated to find a serviceable presentation of the big picture only in the final pages, in the book's conclusion - it would have been helpful for me if his broad interpretation had been integrated into the story as he was telling it. I would recommend that most readers start with the conclusion, since it's not exactly going to give anything away, and possibly even refer back to it periodically throughout the read.The book evidences several ignominious flaws, which, although commonplace in Christian literature, are no less tedious for it. Women receive little consideration, for example. One might think that not a single woman lived in all of Christendom between Monica and Hildegard of Bingen, reading this book. While the roots of monasticism are considered at length, the origins of the orders of nuns receive not a single word.It probably goes without saying that extra-canonical views are generally treated unsympathetically, to say nothing of so-called "pagans." In the opinion of this reader, it is high time for that imprecise polemical term to be rejected by academic literature.Despite all that, Chadwick does an admirable job in coolly surveying the various forces at work, and is often judicious in recognizing a meaningless political spat in theological guise for what it is. Armed with a general familiarity of the topic, any reader will certainly come away enriched.

The Early Church by Henry Chadwick is a survey of early church history from the time of St. Paul to the schism between East and West. Another question and dispute was a definition of Christ's relationship to God and as God. Is it like water: being solid, liquid, and steam; or something else. The discusion made many upset and there was a lot debate and rivallry between Rome, Antioch, Constantinople, Alexandria, and Jerusalem as well as Carthage until Islam swept all of Rome's competition away (Islam stealing much of Christendom away) and Rome basically won by being the sole survivor and by successfully converting the German barbarians to its way of seeing things, or something close to that.The effect of Music with the Christian's cause and it's admiration and contribution to conversions was also something noteworthy. The Early Church had very convincing musical effects on convincing unbelievers as well as their sense of community and helping those on the fringe.The early formation of one's religion and the early formation of one's country, especially its laws, seems to be two of the most important areas of history one could study.The early Christians were a spiritual people and they radiated something including hope that created many followers. Lisa Genova, the author of Still Alice, has done it again. She has taken a every serious medical issue, combined it with a believable, intelligent main character and created an informative, realistic and hopeful story. I had never heard of Left Neglect until reading this story. Sarah, our main character seems to have everything she wants, a high powered job, a loving husband, three children, a beautiful home and an unending schedule, on which she seems to thrive. Genova describes beautifully, what that life is like. Sarah's life is a whirlwind of "must dos". She revels in the fact that she can do it all, although sometimes her subconscious is telling her otherwise. This life abruptly changes when Sarah is involved in an automobile accident that leaves her with frontal lobe brain damage. While she survives the crash and is physically recovering, her brain no longer recognizes the left side of her body. Genova takes us through Sarah's responses beginning with denial that anything is wrong, through realization of her situation and on to adjustments that alter her life and, in the process bring her a new happiness. A side story of particular interest is her relationship with her mother. We learn that Sarah lost her brother in a drowning accident when they were children and that her mother was never the same after that. Sarah felt abandoned and alone and as she grew and married, she lost touch with her mother in every real sense. Following the accident, her mother comes back into her life, offering help. We can see ourselves in Lisa's characters. We can feel the emotions and the disappointments and we can only hope that we can rise above our challenges, much as Sarah does in this book.

This book was recommended by my neurologist. I suffer from left neglect due to a recent stroke, but didn't understand it.. The author is a hoot. She can take a subject that's so serious and make it so relatable.By the middle, I was thanking my lucky stars that I didn't experience anything as severe as the subject of this book did. I didn't read Still Alice, another of this author's novels, but I saw the film. The author is doing a great service by writing about these neurological conditions in such a human way. By the end, I understood left neglect do much better than I have from just reading medical websites, or having therapists who haven't experienced it tell me about it.Highly recommended.

Negatives: The beginning was pretty slow for me (though that may be partially because I was reading too many books at the same time). Once the book did pick up, I still had a hard time getting into it because I'm a bit squeamish. Some of the recovery details were vividly described and I just had a hard time reading a lot of chapters at a time.Positives: I learned a ton about a condition I didn't even know existed and once I got about 40% of the way through I couldn't put it down. Also, it was so inspirational and in the end was more about perseverance and family than the actual tragedy. I loved all the family dynamics; they felt real and very nuanced. Sarah felt genuine with all her varied and conflicting emotions; she's proud of her success but feels guilty for the time it takes away from her family. I can relate to that, even if I don't actually have kids yet. Sarah and Bob's relationship was strong but they had their own issues throughout. The deep-seated turmoil between Sarah and her mom was probably what I connected to most and I thought it was well done. I guess my point is that this wasn't just a dry medical story to teach us about a relatively unknown condition: we get to truly see how a person with this condition would experience life.

I wanted to love this boo but it just didn't happen. As someone with left neglect, although not as bad as the book's main character, I would say that the portrayal is unrealistic.Firstly, Sarah must have been in the worst rehab hospital in the country. When I was in rehad they had an alarm on my bed and on my wheelchair to make sure I didn't get up without professional supervision. Even using the bathroom required someone to go with me, door open. Sometimes this was a man, which was embarrassing, but hey, there is no privacy when you're in the hospital. When I started walking, my therapist always used a support belt on me until they were sure I was stable enough to walk on my own. I NEVER fell down. They NEVER let me walk into things. THey NEVER left me alone in the therapy room/gym.Also, why wasn't her head bandaged after surgery? The test they gave her to see if she was blind would not have proved that she wasn't blind to the left (left homonymous hemianopsia, which I have). In either case, the finger would have disappeared as soon as it went to the left of the midpoint. Why didn't she complain or mention the extreme pain after brain surgery? I had a brain hemorrhage which is probably not as painful as being in a car crash since you would probably have other injuries. Brain surgery is the most painful thing I can even imagine, and I really try not to remember it. But I did have a double crainiotomy so maybe mine was more painful than average.She doesn't mention running into walls, doors, people, whatever except at the beginning. This is something I deal with everyday. When she lost Linus, she was able to "run" down the sidewalk without running into anyone, something I can't imagine. She is also able to scan to the left with a lot more success than I have. It's very hard to remember to do something when you've forgotten about it pretty much by definition. She also never mentions that your brain makes up excuses for how things make sense without the left side. This is almost impossible to fight since it's your own brain so you naturally believe it.I'm giving it two stars (instead of one) because it at least addresses this disability which few people know about.

The revolution also marked the victory of Islam over secular politics, and Iran quickly became the aspiring model for Islamic fundamentalists around the world.This book explains in clear, straightforward prose the causes, actions and effects, both short term and long term of this revolution. Little understood and frequently misunderstood, the world was stunned and shocked that such a religiously driven revolution could succeed so quickly, and last well beyond expectations. As the author points out, this revolution proved to be starkly different from past revolutions. Having at it's core a fundamentalist, ultra orthodox, non secular, Islamic principles. This resulted in a complete overhaul and restructuring of the age-old political, economic, social, religious, and ideological orders in Iran.This book is informative, insightful and balanced, providing context and perspective that can be applied to our understanding of our worldwithout the fog of emotions.

This is a fairly detailed yet concise overview of the Iranian revolution: a Islamic revolution which also came to being because leftist protests aligning Marxist with Islamism. A revolution in which many French Intellectuals endorsed a cleric against a "progressive" U.S. backed Shah, who floundered between reform and severe repression. The tone is fair as the author neither demonizes the West nor denies their crimes, and the author paints a complicated picture of the Supreme leader centralizing power in himself and the ulama. Not bad for a novella length write-up in a fairly dry style. It is short, and the implementation of the revolution is sped through way too fast; however, it does give one a grasp on the issues at hand in Tehran in both 1978 and now.

I've been struggling with learning mixing on my own for the past 2 years....and John's books have made a huge improvement on my mixes. This is another excellent and straightforward book from John. Well organized and easy to apply to my mixes...for immediate results. And if you don't already have it....you should also get his Mastering book.

Another gem of a book! by author John Rogers. He walks you through the world of mixing music, which with todays technology, allows for musicians to also shape ones own creations. He explains the tasks and problems one encounters in mixing and provides solutions and explanations as to the reasons. And i love how he does this with his simplified comparrisions to things! This is definitely a must-read for all those who transpire to be better at mixing and understanding the process!

John has a knack for making difficult or hard to grasp concepts easy to understand for the absolute beginner. If mixing seems to be something only a "professional" can do then I recommend getting this book and seeing how much easier it is then you think!

John Rogers does it again! I've read it twice since it came out and have heard magnificent changes in my mixes. Things that I couldn't figure out and did not know how to fix were all in this book! Thank you John Rogers for sharing your knowledge!

I already have John's audio mastering book so I decided to buy this one. I'm so glad I did. It was extremely helpful, an easy read. My song mixes drastically improved after applying what I learned from Song Mixing Secrets.

I highly recommend this book. The author has fulfilled his promise that this book will help you better understand how to mix music well using techniques he has developed over his over 19 years in this industry. As a sound tech for my church I personally love the problem and solution section.
