Dr. Kaveny's book is a welcome addition to the discussion of how Americans have viewed and interpreted civil law mostly as prevention from doing wrong, "law as policemen," a view argued recently by Joel Feinberg. Unlike the "law as policeman" model, she suggests that we look at our current way of making and interpreting our laws as "law leading to virtue." Instead of punishing doing wrong and viewing law as strictly puntative, she uses the model that Aquinas offers where the pursuit of the virtue of justice, promoting the common good should be considered in creating and interpreting our laws. Her argument is compelling, practical, and positive, as we continue to face the absolute deadlock we have reached as a society regarding such continuing hot button issues as abortion laws and euthanasia. Dr. Kaveny offers solid expertise both as a leading attorney and as a well-regarded theologian. She also weighs equally the importance of the legal and ethical issues of autonomy and nicely, I think, brings in John Paul II's proclamation on solidary; the idea that as humans we need to work together to see the unjustices placed on the marginalized and work together as people of faith and as Americans to solve these unjustices, while not infringing on equally compelling individual rights.Like the clear, concise thinker she is, she presents the history and arguments for the ways we have dealt with our laws in the past and in many ways the present, and intelligently points out her views of the strengths and weaknesses of the arguments. Then she offers her suggestions on how they could be accomplished in our pluralistic society, points out the challenges, and empowers us, not as liberals and conservatives, but as good people who want to make this country better for all Americans, to consider her proposals. I never thought I would want to read another essay about abortion as I'm weary about how the issue has divided people of good will for too many years. Dr. Kaveny addresses it head on and offers a way for all of us to consider this issue as we move forward in a way that may not be so hateful and devisive.Even though this book is in the very fine Ethics in Modern Life academic series, Dr. Kaveny writes so clearly, offers such illustrative examples, and presents others' work in clear, non-judgemental language. And don't be afraid of her discussions of moral theology, especially her discussions on Aquinas. As an Aquinas fan, who knows first-hand how difficult he can be, it is great to see his work explained so well and his ideas considered in our present day struggles in coming to terms with very hot contemporary issues that continue to divide us. I'd strongly suggest this book for those interested in how theology (not just Catholic or Christian) is used in considering the impact of how our civil laws can help us listen to each other instead of scream and denigrate each other. I thought it was a great book and can't wait for Dr. Kaveny's next discussion on the issues she presents so intelligently and convincingly in Law's Virtues.

It was a thorough analysis from within the Catholic tradition. Professor Kaveny is speaking to secular legal theorists and to conservative Catholics who see that one issue should take precedence in our political discourse. Again agree with her or disagree with her, every informed Catholic should read this book. It will inform your thinking and you will develop your own theological developments within a political and legal context. Professor's Kaveny's approach to law will be in contrast to the liberal theory often embraced by political liberals and libertarians. However, it is much worth the time and effort to read through.

The book was new and reached me in good shape. I enjoyed reading it; it is written in clear language. Prof. Kaveny is really an astute author! I will definitely recommend it for people interested in philosophy of law, or in law in general.

I had to pick this up for a class I'm taking this semester, and I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised by how thought provoking it is. I went into it thinking I'd read about some crazy religious ideas regarding to how we should live moral lives, but it takes a very realistic and down to earth approach. If you want to learn about all sides of different issues, whether you agree with them or not, this is worth the read.

This book, to judge from what I can read here, has a better tone than most moral/legal theory books produced by Catholics nowadays. That is no small thing, and worth commenting on. But I always wonder how anyone is really supposed to take seriously the contention that the author is somehow not putting forth a view that is, as she writes, "endorsed by a religious...authority." It is in the very nature of the rational tradition like that Of Isidore of Seville and Thomas Aquinas, who are the lodestars of this effort from the start, to be based in the authority of Catholic revelation. This is not an optional or detachable part of the tradition. Catholic theorists have a right to believe that it is in someway useable in a more generic sense, even by those who do not share those ideas on revelation. Yet they do NOT have the right to require that others should accept as coherent that a legal tradition that was and is heavily belief-based should be accepted for more general use. And also note that had the election gone the other way that is precisely what might be happening right now, with nicely-toned works of studied inoffensiveness used as grids for a more didactic morality of their choice. Please note, even if they happen to agree with some or even most of the arguments, which some might, There is the essential wrench for Catholic views on this matter, and it seems essentially insuperable for many who do not accept the parameters. The author seems to think it is just about explaining differing "premises" No, it is more basic than that, and devolves to a matter of what counts as coherent. One might agree with plenty in such a book, and still find the basic Thomstic base incoherent for this society. Period. The simpler way of putting this is that author's like this, though well intentioned and probably quite decent people to judge from the tone, really just want their cake and to eat it too. They want to have their own beliefs grounded in their faith become the guide for society, and yet believe that they embrace pluralism. Concomitant with that is the only thing I found offensive about the book. Namely the predictable contention that any other view is necessarily "atomistic". A huge jump, and one that Catholics love to make. Therefore, the clarity which the author seeks in legal understanding is made essentially vague from the start, at least for non-adherents of Catholicism.. And that is OK, because some level of vagueness is a frequent companion of democratic and/or pluralistic praxis. It is not surprising that quoters of Isidore of Seville may be discomfited by such realities. Still, however the author got to her better tone, it is a good thing.

Danielle Ofri, MD, PhD, is an associate professor of medicine at the New York University School of Medicine and has cared for patients at New York’s Bellevue Hospital for more than two decades. She is the author of, most recently, What Doctors Feel: How Emotions Affect the Practice of Medicine, as well as the critically acclaimed Singular Intimacies, Incidental Findings, Medicine in Translation, and the e-book original volume Intensive Care. I found it refreshing that a doctor would be so concerned with communication with patients that she would go to this much trouble to research the literature, interview patients and doctors and suggest that this simple tool is as valuable to successful medical outcomes as any other medical procedure. Dr. Ofri invites us to witness the lives of several remarkable people who are defined not by their illness but rather by their character and she highlights how a clarity in understanding of the patient's needs is far more important then knowing just the person's malady. She juxtaposes the barriers doctors face in communicating with patients with the desire of patients to be given the best possible treatment . On the patient's behalf, she quotes the author Anatole Broyard who wrote "To the typical physician, my illness is a routine incident in his rounds, while for me it's the crisis of my life." She goes on to say that rather than seeing the conversation between doctor and patient as the utilitarian humdrum of a visit, the conversation should be viewed as the single most important tool of medical care. The book is written in an engaging style with perhaps a few too many forced metaphors. I enjoyed reading it and wish it became widely read by those in the medical field.

When I recently came across Dr Danielle Ofri's book "What Patients Say, What Doctors Hear," I was particularly interested because as an internal medicine physician who is also a chronic pain specialist, I am very aware of the importance of communication between doctor and patient, and the value of getting to know the patient and his/her life and activities as part of the evaluation of the patient's needs and determination of appropriate treatment. In fact, I also teach a nation-wide remedial opioid prescribing course primarily to physicians and nurse practitioners who've been disciplined by the state professional licensing boards related to their prescribing of controlled substances. In my course I repeatedly emphasize the importance of connecting with the patient and engaging with them, all too frequently a missing piece. I was thrilled to read what Dr Ofri had to say; her book gives several detailed examples of the value of engaging with the patient, how easily misunderstandings take place, and the problems that ensue when inadequate communication is present. . This is particularly important when it comes to "difficult" patients, patients who especially need a doctor who is willing to ask questions, listen to the answers, and to problem-solve with the patient. I think this is a very valuable book, much needed, and one that can really help health professionals to do a better job.

Dr. Ofri has written another great book about the importance of doctor and patient communication (I also loved her book, What Doctors Feel). Apart from being a great writer, Dr. Ofri has the ability to articulate the "inner voice" that all doctors possess. As a doctor reading this book, you will find that your own inner voice will come to life. It is also a great book for patients to read. The book demonstrates the powers of empathy and humility on patient care. It sets a standard for what patients should expect in their relationship with their doctors. Readers will come to see that healthcare consists of much more than medications or procedures. All this is done through interesting and well written stories that make the read effortless.Through these stories and anecdotes, a philosophy of patient care will emerge for the reader and alter the way he or she looks at medicine in the future. The reader will also be touched by the book's poignancy.

Another fascinating book by Danielle Ofri. She argues persuasively that the conversation between doctor and patient is the key to successful diagnosis and treatment. In addition to vignettes of her interactions with patients, she includes a fascinating discussion of "listening" that begins with advice from her cello teacher. There are other moments when she raises ethical issues of deception that provoke more thought in her readers.

I am a retired internist and medical school professor who devoted much of my career to teaching communication skills to medical students. I found Dr. Ofri's book refreshing, informative, and emotionally compelling. The threads that she skillfully weaves together are the data collected by scientists , the heartfelt stories told by patients, and her own experience as a listener and caregiver. The author gives a master class in listenng that is a must read for health care professionals and their students, and for anyone with an interest in interpersonal communication .

This is a great book. I bought a few copies: one for me, one for a doctor who listens and treats her patients they way they should be treated (as a thank you) and one which I slipped to a doctor who hasn't heard a word I've said for 9 years. I trust that all three of us understand that listening, truly hearing what each other are saying in a medical setting, provides the best health outcomes.

As someone who has both worked with medical students and been a patient advocate I believe Dr. Ofri has nailed it! She tells stories and provides evidence to back up the idea that communication is key to a patient/health care provider relationship. I highly recommend this book for the layman, such as myself, who wants to better understand how to navigate the world of clinics and hospitals. The book is around 290 pgs. long, and has a very good 'time-line' section before the first chapter.Paul Volcker was Chairman of the Federal Reserve for 8 years, 1979-1987. During most of that time Ronald Reagan was President. The national economy was in a pickle when Volcker took over. Monetary inflation was over 10%. Dr. Volcker is best known as the Fed Chairman who stood rock solid behind the corrective course of maintaining high discount (interest) rates (up to 20%), long enough to break the back of high inflation. (High discount rates are painful to businesses but pleasurable to savers).Mr. Volcker remained active as chairman of various boards and in other ways. For example he chaired the board behind the successful investigation of corruption in the "Oil For Food" program (involving Iraq) launched in 1996. Another example of post-Gov't. work is as chairman of the so-called "Volcker Commission" that successfully investigated alleged irregularities involving Swiss Banks as holders of unreported assets that had belonged to Jewish victims of the WW 2 Holocaust.Though Paul Volcker still lives (over 90) as I write this, he is unlikely to be remembered now (2018) by younger generations unless they are involved in the subjects of economics and the Federal Reserve. In that the aforementioned subjects don't generally interest the 'man in the street' or perhaps not even the general reader, I don't see this book as being a knockout of a seller other than to libraries, bankers, financial advisors and contemporaries of Dr. Volcker. I hope I am wrong about this.Readers will learn of the 'Triffin Dilemma' pertaining to the gold supply, and about Volcker's 'Three Verities' which he considers (and any citizen should consider) highly important to this country. They are (1), Stable Prices; (2), Sound Finance, and (3), Good Government.A certain revelation in this book that I was completely unaware of is the fact that President Reagan, in company with and via Chief of Staff Jim Baker, made an embarrassing demand of Chairman Volcker - a demand involving the interest rate level. (Pgs. 118-119).I highly recommend the book.

A great book by a great man. A legend in financial history. There is a lot of history here and Paul Volcker looks back on some of these events-what he did right and what he delayed in doing. While he may have his critics, the reader is left with Volcker's strong desire for public service. Paul Volcker knocks the ball out of the park through his autobiography, published at the advanced age of 90. There’s something endearing about Volcker’s style: he comes off as a chip off the old block, approachable, a wise and simple man.Fiscal standards became unbridled proceeding August 1971 when the last vestige of the US Dollar Gold Convertibility Standard was dismantled by fiat. The money supply grew like never before and it eventually set off a wave of price inflation in major markets including the price of gasoline and cost of borrowing. Geopolitical events unraveling in the Middle East weren’t helping, and the US Dollar itself risked being speculated into oblivion.Paul Volcker may be considered “The Fed’s Last Hawk”. As chief of the Fed, he administered the medicine necessary to extinguish the United States’ epoch of inflation, or as he termed it, the Great Inflation. As the newly appointed Chairman of the Fed in 1979 with the inflation rate over 13 percent, Volcker wasted no time, immediately raising interest rates. His mission: “lead a war against inflation.”“I suppose if some Delphic oracle had whispered in my ear that our policy would result in interest rates of 20 percent or more, I might have packed my bags and headed home.”Indeed, at its peak: “the rate on three-month Treasury bills eventually exceeded 17 percent, the commercial bank prime lending rate peaked at 21.5 percent, and, most sensitively, mortgage rates surpassed 18 percent. Those rates had never been seen before in our financial history.” The unemployment rate proceeded to creep over ten percent, and a wave of bankruptcies pounded the Savings & Loans lending industry, crippling the economy into recession as the wicked chimera of stagflation roared.Stagflation is the economic phenomenon where price inflation and economic recession intersect. As a central banker, it is the most difficult balancing act, a central banking conundrum: do you raise the interest rate to combat inflation, or do you lower it to combat the recession? If you raise it to calm prices, you also cause the cost of borrowing to go up. If you lower it to stimulate financial facilities, money supply growth continues and the price level never ceases to increase.History proved Volcker right. Leading the Fed, his aggressive approach against inflation got prices under control, despite the severe market disruptions it caused. This then set the stage to combat the recession, and by the end of his term in 1987 both inflation and unemployment were normalized.“Now the environment is quite different. The generation with direct experience of stagflation is passing on.”

We learn in this book who inspired Volcker and how he became the person he became. There are numerous inside stories of a remarkable career that spanned many administrations. It was interesting to hear how monetary policy worked in the days well before I was born.Being a lifelong student of economics, I really enjoyed the insight to some of the problems Volcker faced too, so if you also like econ, this will be great for you, though it does not really go too deep, and shouldn't be a problem for people who aren't much interested.Really touching stories behind the numbers, and funny insights to a lot of things you never knew about. Volcker had and still has an incredibly unique perspective on public service and the financial universe. His memoirs provide fascinating insight into what a motivated person with a fabulous intelect can contribute. There are just so many twists and turns in the book, that I honestly did not know what was going to happen from one page to the next.As an avid fan of Jeremy Robinson's books, I would have to rate this book as his best yet. Where he comes up with these ideas is beyond me, and how he has the creative genius to write a story that is so complex and detailed, yet so very very human, is nothing short of a gift.I should add that I received an ARC of this book in return for an honest review. I loved it so much I bought a copy anyway.

In the afterward the author writes that the book was written in a very difficult period of his life. Writing a critical review feels a bit like kicking him when he was down. I'll also note that something like 73% of the readers gave the book 5 stars. So lots of readers liked the book. I am not one of these readers.I have a hard time finding anything good to write about the book. The book is boring with shallow characters. The writing is not very good and the book just goes on and on. I finished it, but only by skimming through pages and pages. The author seems to think that he has something interesting to write about the nature of reality. Unfortunately he is wrong.The author writes that he spent more time than he usually does writing this howler. I can only imagine what his other books are like. Perhaps it goes without saying that this is the last book I plan to read by this author.

Is there a “real” reality, or is reality merely whatever our perception of it is?Compared to the majority of Robinson’s catalog, this novel is a large departure – both in style and content. “Infinite” is the 38th novel I’ve read from Robinson, so I feel pretty qualified in making an honest assessment of the book. Robinson typically is an action / adventure guy. His novels are usually filled with exciting chases and battles, mutated monsters, and edge of your seat action. There are exceptions of course, but for the majority, this is his typical formula. And he’s good at it. Robinson has delivered, time and time again, books that provide big enjoyment worthy of becoming summer blockbuster movies. If there was an area where his catalog was lacking it was probably in the deeper more thoughtful and introspective novels. He helps fill that void with “Infinite”. In this one Robinson shows a deftness in the way he handles both William’s own thoughts and feelings, as well as his relationship with Gal and Capria.To be honest, I was unsure of my feelings on this one for much of the book. It’s starts slowly (particularly for a Robinson novel) and then seems to split off in several different directions as the story continues. Three quarters of the way through the book, I was feeling like Robinson had tried to include too many plot lines into one book because certain aspects of the story seemed forced. But then, I finished the book. And Robinson reminded me why he’s the author and I’m just a reader. The twist towards the end of the story was so good and it was there all the time and I didn’t pick up on it. He not only uses the twist to surprise, but to also tie in all of the other elements of the story that seemed a little out of place before. Suddenly everything in the book made perfect sense. It was very much like an “Ender’s Game” moment as you realize that all of the clues where right there and you were so caught up in the story that you missed them.This is not just a great science fiction story, I could make the argument that it is one of Robinson’s best novels to date.

This is without any doubt the most meaningful scifi/fantasy I`'ve ever read, and I`'ve been reading them for more than 50 years. The reason, I think, is the soul and the fact that I agree with every one of Will`s decisions throughout his fascinating experiences. One can identify, mourn, fear, and love right along with him. It could have ended with "So. Are. You." And been a very good novel. Extending it to "Engage" made it a great novel. This is proof, one doesn`t need swords and sorcery, inter galactic battles, has been Seals saving humanity, or gamers murdering everyone in sight. One or two great characters and a single POV with "Intelligent Imagination" is all one requires.Thanks for this wonderful adventure, Jeremy Robinson, you are my new author of choice.

Too many pop culture references and glorification of programming. Not enough extrapolation of what an immortal human has to come to terms with.
