Such an easy read for a difficult subject, had lots of tips, including how to make sure to get someone served. And actual practical tips. It makes it feel like a much less scary thing to do. The tone is friendly, and as many Nolo books, avoid legalese.

If you've never gone through the court system before this book will help take some of the "mystery" out of it. Helps you in preparation for your case and how to deal with some unexpected situations. I do recommend it.

I found the book interesting and informative. I plan to test the information within the next couple of months. I felt a little research was needed prior to using the system and at this point I feel this book was a good choice.

The thumbnail shows this book with the light green/blue cover, but the book I received has a dark green cover. After comparing with the instructors light green covered book, there are differences in the text. The lighter covered book is the more recent edition. However, the ISBN and copyright date are identical. That shouldn't even be possible!Make sure you get the light green/blue cover!

worst radiation book ever, attix does a MUCH better job!author does not explain anything. material which should have been covered in 40 pages is condensed to 5-8 pages in each chapter...don't buy unless you can't survive your class without this book.

This textbook has a lot of information, but it is not a good teaching book. I had one of the authors as a professor for a Radiation Protection and Shielding class, and although he definitely knows his stuff, he teaches out of this book. The only thing I got out of this book is how to derive equations. Using this book alone, I couldn't tell you where to use the final equations or how to even apply them or the concepts in the book to a real life problem. There are no examples on how to solve some of the end-of-chapter problems, which are trials in themselves (I had no prior knowledge in this subject before taking the class that used this book). This book's failing is lack of applications of the concepts and equations provided. This book doesn't belong in an undergraduate class. I give it two stars simply because it contains a good deal of information. Bottom line though, it doesn't show you what to do with the information. I had a 4.0 in nuclear engineering until the class that used this textbook.

Hoi lanu, hoi lanu -- Woe unto us, woe unto us -- there are, as yet, no truly educational, useful, practical textbooks from which to learn the discipline of radiation shielding.This book by professors Shultis & Faw is a valuable reference work, but not a practical textbook to teach a course on radiation shielding from. I have taught postgraduate modules in Radiation Shielding, Radiation Protection and Nuclear Physics for Nuclear Engineers, annualy since 1991, and this textbook is simply not an ideal teaching tool.Like most other books on radiation transport & shielding, this book derives, with great travail of soul, a rather bewildering succession of hundreds upon hundreds of usually approximate, analytical formulations to enable "approximate calculations by hand" of radiation behaviour, radiation attenuation, dose rate, and more. In end-of-chapter exercises, students are then required to apply these approximate, inaccurate analytical expressions to solve an equally bewildering variety of problems with approximate manual calculations, in order to gain experience in the subject.The real-life situation in the 21st century, is that shielding analysts use powerful codes running on fast digital computers to solve radiation transport and shielding problems. The practicing shielding analyst therefore requires the following knowledge and skills:1) A broad, encyclopedic mastery of the physics concepts that govern ionising radiation emission, radiation transport and radiation dosimetry;2) A broad, encyclopedic mastery of the characteristic abilities of engineerinmg materials available for radiation shielding;2) The ability to model radiation transport problems using a range of state-of-the-art radiation transport codes, e.g. SCALE 6.2 and MCNP6 as well as material activation codes such as FISPACT-II.Because powerful and accurate radiation transport codes are available, it is not particularly meaningful to teach students a series of rather useless approximate analytical techniques. These techniques were valuable in the period 1940 to 1975, but have become obsolete and therefore rather irrelevant. To me, a parade of approximate formulas are simply irritating. The radiation shielding analyst who is employed in the nuclear industry, performs analyses and writes reports that become technical addenda to "License Application Safety Cases" submitted to TOUGH nuclear safety regulators. Nuclear Safety Regulators will NOT accept reports that employ old-time approximate formulas. No, the regulator wants analysts to use MCNP, FISPACT-II, MONACO, KENO, ORIGEN and ENDF/B-7.1 cross-section data. Not vintage model approximate analytical formulas. The parade of such formulas in this textbook, may be seen as an educational exercise, but it is NOT directly useful training for a Nuclear Safety Analyst working in a post-2015 world, who has to perform calculations at a standard acceptable to TOUGH Nuclear Safety Regulators.The preferred methodology to be followed in any modern course on Radiation Transport & Shielding is as follows:1) Guide the student to understand and become highly skilled in the foundational concepts of the transport of ionising radiation. A conceptual, encyclopedic mastery of the subject is required to guide the practicing shielding analyst.2) Present a clear formulation of the physics principles underlying radiation transport and the characteristic shielding abilities of important materials;3) Give the student a feeling of how radiation transport codes work, by carrying out some steps of numerical solution techniques by manual computations. Let them write a simple 1-D, 1-group discrete ordinates code, a simple point-kernel code, etc.4) Expose students to radiation transport codes used in the nuclear & radiation industry, notably SCALE (MONACO, ORIGEN, KENO), FISPACT-II and MCNP.5) Teach and guide the student to begin building up a "toolbox" of calculational techniques, using e.g. MathCAD, MatLAB or Mathematica. Such a calculational "toolbox" is one mark of a professional scientist. The moment a topic is mastered, the calculations involved in the analysis should be coded in e.g. Mathematica and be added to the scientists' calculational "toolbox."I present a 2-year In-House Training course in Computational Radiation & Reactor Analysis, to MSc & M.Ing graduates who start working in the Nuclear Safety Sector. Unfortunately, I can not use this Shultis & Faw textbook directly, because it is a bit of a museum piece. On the other hand, this same two gifted professors wrote an EXCELLENT "Introduction to MCNP" lecture, which is directly useful. Their textbook needs a total overhaul to make it relevant and directly useful, as we approach 2020. Rogue states and states driven by irrational religious apocalypticism, may use nuclear weapons in acts of war before the year 2030 (may it never be...) and then knowledge of radiation shielding, radionuclide transport and effect mitigation will become essential survival skills.(Physicists and applied mathematicians who develop radiation transport codes, of course, do need to master the numerical techniques required to solve radiation transport problems, in detail. Special textbooks deal with these topics.)

Outstanding book. For graduate level research or reference it is a must have tool. Some seem to struggle with it at the undergraduate level, but I find that it is very comprehensive. In particular, it covers the majority of case work you're likely to find in the real world. Only drawback is that there is less emphasis on derivation (likely stemming from the author's mathematics background; the proofs are sometimes over-trivialized)

I have read 'Radiation Shielding' from cover to cover,and I must say that Shultis hit the nail on the head for almost every question I wanted answered.This book was very helpful in that it provided great detail for shielding procedures, step by step,unlike many other books I read.The only problem I found with this textbook is that the binding on it is weak,and comes off easily. Plus the pages have a strong smell of sulfur(fart) .This was probably due to a problem with the manufacture of the paper,but don't worry,it's not that bad.Thumbs up.Great book.

I read this used in paperback then bought it on Kindle to keep and read again. Lots of readers have expressed distaste at the violence against women and children depicted in the novel. I grew up in Texas. In small towns. Went to a segregated school. Pretending bad things didn't happen to women and children of color in these small towns is just willful ignorance. The people who want to hide from this reality and find it distasteful are unwittingly acting and talking exactly like the "good folk" who ignored it in the communities where I grew up. It took courage to write this book; I hope more readers find the courage to read it and reflect on it.

Ruby is the first book that the newly established book club I joined, picked to read. When I pick a book I read a description of the book and I read the reviews. Having read both bad and good reviews of this book, I wasn't sure that I could follow through and read Ruby. I am so very glad that I did. The rape, degradation, humiliation and indignity of children and women was extremely hard to read about. Yet, I feel that it is important to read this book. It should make us, as human beings look into ourselves, and see the cruelty that has and continues to go on in our world. Difficult though it is to read, this is a beautiful written story, I can not understand why anyone could call this Boring. Emotionally draining, yes. Thought provoking yes, uncomfortable yes, angry yes. It would have been easy to put my head in the sand and not read this book, that would have been a huge mistake. The ugliness in the world needs to be confronted, looked at and changed, and to know that their are good people like Ephram. And that there is hope no matter our situation. Pam

This is the darkest and most disturbing book I’ve ever read. There are scenes I wish I could unread. While I understand that this book gives awareness to the evilness of men in regards to sexual assaults, it seems the author included details of these scenes for mere shock value.Ruby’s life of sexual abuse starts young. Ruby defines herself as someone unlovable and deserving of all that happens to her. Her story is about the demons of sexual abuse that follow her throughout most of her life until she finally confronts them. Ruby’s story takes place in the African American town, Liberty, Texas where the reader is exposed to the town’s religious hypocrisy, gossip, KKK terror and the 1 man who sees Ruby for more the town’s promiscuous resident.This book is not for sensitive readers. There are many elements in this book that even most readers will find dark and disturbing. Sexual abuse scenes are grotesquely detailed. Strong language is used throughout the book. Elements of voo-doo and satanism are also part of the story. There is domestic violence and lynchings, physical abuse, and murder. This is not a book that I recommend to any and everyone. The only reason I read it was because it was a book club choice. The member has since apologized for the referral as she had no idea it was as dark as it is. Our book club doesn’t typically shy away from such books but we do try to give warnings when the story contains such disturbing scenes and material as this book did. I persevered through it hoping there would be a redeeming end. It was mildly redeeming, at best.However...in spite of the disturbing elements and scenes in the book, the book is well written. It obviously had some effect on me as I kept turning the pages with a desire to know how it ended and to know if Ruby was to ever overcome the life she had endured thus far. Ruby’s life can very well mimic the life of a girl who has endured years of sex trafficking or sexual abuse in her own home. Ruby’s story isn’t just one for a fiction plot, but certainly one that can, sadly, be told in real life conversations. And may God appoint the Ephram’s of this story who have a heart to listen so that the storyteller may find healing:“He (Ephram) whispered in her ear, ‘I ain’t going nowhere. If you brave enough to live it, the least I can do is listen.’”If one chooses to read this book, I hope the reader will walk away more aware of the brokenness sexual abuse leaves a person. But also with the hope that abuse doesn’t define a person and that if one believes in God, there is always hope for healing.“Ruby knew then that a lie could only control a person if they believed it.”

I have rarely been so conflicted in writing a review. This sometimes graphic depiction of small town racism and religion in the black township of Liberty, Texas was at times brilliant and deserving of the highest praise. So many times I caught myself hoping I would remember a particular phrase or form of expression that was so creatively perfect in capturing the language and nuances of the time and culture in this very provincial part of small town, black America.The author's prose was often brilliant, and this may well become a classic piece of literature at some point in the future. For me, however, I was too often confused by the narrative and the attempt to keep the cast of characters straight. It was also never clear to me what was the overriding theme of church and religion. Some mix of Christianity, and what bordered on witchcraft, for lack of a better term, was sometimes difficult to sort out for this reader. Ruby was either crazy, inflicted with the devil or just a lost, abused soul. There was much talk of trees, birds and the spirit of murdered children.I must confess that I struggled through the book, and that it often felt like I was in a fight of my own. There was no chance I was putting it aside though. Like I said, it was too often brilliant and poignant. While I ultimately decided on a three star review, I think it is worth your time to struggle with this thoughtful and disturbing work of fiction. Please read it and make up your own mind.

I very seldom read a book twice, as there are so many books and so little time. This book was a choice for my book club. It may be the darkest book I've ever read, but I couldn't put it down. My book club meets every month and even though we had already discussed this book, we ended up discussing it again at the next meeting. It was brilliantly written, even though it made us sad and mad at the same time. Horrific things are going on in a small town setting that will make you crazy, once you get into it, you will have to finish it and you might even have to read it twice like I did.

The toolkit concept, one that is continued throughout the book, spotlights process and analytical assets that are described by the authors as including “guides, frameworks, models, quick calculations, and practical ideas.” The topics covered in the book range from an essential review of Incoterms to a more advanced discussion of Decision Matrix Analysis.It comes as no surprise that the chapter on warehouse management is the first and the longest. While I did not read or review the first edition of this book, I did review Gwynne’s Richards’ other book: Warehouse Management (also in its second edition).[...]The key point in favor of The Logistics and Supply Chain Toolkit is actually made on the very first page of the book – in the 10th line of type to be exact - in an endorsement by Nigel Price, Managing Director, CRP. He says that the book provides the tools as well as the plans for managing logistics and supply chains. As simple as it sounds, that’s all you really need, and it’s harder to find than you might think in the books and other thought leadership published today. Master the basics and their application and the sky is the limit.Another example of a basic concept that is covered and elevated in the book is the Pareto Principle (a.k.a. the 80/20 rule). I expected the authors to dismiss it as a casual approach to data in a high tech analytical world. Not so. In their opinion (much to the relief of those of us working in the real world…) there is still room for proven rules of thumb. The trick is to apply it where appropriate. 80/20 is a big stick to swing when analyzing broad opportunities rather than a precision approach to be used in more detail sensitive circumstances.According to the authors, an example of where 80/20 is appropriate is in managing supplier relationships, separating companies with high spend from those with smaller spend. They then expand their discussion of relationships – particularly the strategic ones – by providing a diverse and interesting list of dimensions that qualify the closeness of supplier relationships. These include information shared, the number of people on both sides interacting on a regular basis, and the approach to problem resolution.One ‘hidden’ gem is something of a mini-essay by Julian Amey (former Vice Preside of Global Supply Chain for Astra Zeneca) in Chapter 4: Supply Chain Management Tools. The caution he provides to readers not to put too much into strategy – especially if it takes away from our ability to be realistic and focus on results – is perfectly placed and convincingly stated. I would have liked to know more about him from the perspective of the authors, and why he was asked to write this mini-essay, but his inclusion was an absolute win.I recommend this book for anyone working in the real world of logistics and supply chain that could use some tools and a plan to use them!

I like to buy the latest update of this book but skip an edition. The prices in this version didn't seem to change much at all for most of the 15 guns I checked on and own, mostly pistols. I know from auctions in the last 3 months at least in South Central Va that prices seem to be increasing on old military arms but vary wildly. Perhaps the prices are from late 2015 or early 2016 and certainly geography sure plays a role. One needs several books to really get an idea and checking final realized prizes at on-line auction sites. The color pictures in the book of rifles was very nice; hopefully in the future even more can be added including pistols. I did notice a Swiss Luger magazine dropped in value which I've also noticed has happened in on-line auctions. But just like "The Blue Book of Gun Values" I often find the prices don't agree very well with the values people around here will pay. Still it's a very useful reference.

These are great to have and as a collector, I find that the prices are pretty spot on in general when I compare with auctions, private sales, stores, and gun shows.This is nice to have if you need to determine the value of your collection for purposes of sale or insurance amount.If you have an old military surplus firearm in decent shape and are thinking of selling it, you really should check with this book first before you possibly let something rare go for cheap

It is interesting-- the prices in Peterson's Guide actually seem lower on average than prices seen at big gun shows. For example Ballester-Molinas seem to be priced at $500-600 at WI shows for a nice one in good condition, the average dogs are priced at $500, but the 2017's guide price is VG $400, good $300. In contrast, the former $79 Turk Mauser rifles at recent shows seem to be priced at $200-300. But in Peterson's 8th edition the 98/22 is valued at VG $175, the 1902/38 is valued at VG $200, and the Turk M38 short rifle is valued at VG $250. So prices have gone up on Turk Mausers and Mosins. It seems the book values are correctly priced or reflect prices actually on the lower side of the going prices seen at recent WI gun shows or auctions. To me, it seems at WI gun shows, that the Surplus Rifles have experienced a marked climbed in retail price; almost to the point of some really crazy prices. Many rifles just sit on the tables due to such high prices. I think they have hit the top value that people are willing to pay. Less new collectors are seen at shows. It seems I always see the same old-guy-over-50 group looking for surplus firearms. We might be losing the new collectors due to high prices.So Peterson's new update is not showing these crazy prices. His book lists RETAIL prices. His listed values seem pretty accurate. They may actually be lower than the prices seen at midwest gun shows. The book seems to be "right on " in his estimated values- not to high , not too low. The new edition has a special section in color, "Historic Sniper Rifles of the World" . In this guide there are many views of the pistol or the rifle and its bayonet. Sometimes there are so many photos that it is difficult to find the value line because it extends onto the next page, or to find the item photo because it is found on a different page. This can be confusing if you do not know what the item or bayonet is/looks like, a non firearm person might have a confusing time attempting to match a photo with the price because the information is spread out onto another page ---a slight weak point to the guide. However, this occurs generally only a few times where a lot of photo background information is provided. I am amazed at how compact and well organized the guide is, most likely in an effort to keep size & price down.On real collectable items like the .45 auto, P38 pistols, M1 carbines, or the Mauser K98 there are lots of quality B&W identification photos and ID advice to help one get a fair market value of the many different versions. Generally, the firearm descriptions are very detailed and he provides information on when certain items were imported. Peterson states what the more common import marks are on a piece. Prices are separated for import marked examples and the non import marked, also matching specimens. All photos are clear. You can use the book to identify a firearm if you came across a specimen you are unsure of. The format is great, generally the price information line is located directly below the firearm photo and its descriptive paragraph. Prices range from Fair, Good, Very Good, to Excellent. Some firearms have categories Poor or New in the Box. Peterson's grading system is clearly listed/stated on page 10. The first 14 pages of the book are a strong point that covers nomenclature, market trends, the grading system, Class III weapons, veteran bring backs, capture papers, import marks, and matching numbers and how these factors effect pricing. Other strong points are the 14 page Appendix listing C & R firearms, and the huge 28 page Index arranged by country then the firearm name/types found in this GUIDE.

I find this catalogue to be invaluable for identifying and valuation get my collection. A real must have if you are interested in military history and development of small arms and there identification

I had an older version of this book. it has been well updated and was worth the money. prices are updated and more in line as prices changed from years ago. it does a good job on mil surplus items that have come in the recent years. if you have one that is 5+ years old, this was worth the replacement.

As a general reference it is fine but sometimes not enough information. Covers a lot of territory.

A bit vague on it's pricing schedule and organization, but informative.

I recently adopted a little long-haired stray from the city pound. I was instructed not to bathe him for at least ten days because he had just been neutered the day I picked him up. The poor dog's hair was very matted and he smelled something fierce. And, worst of all, he was constantly scratching and he seemed to be miserable. I thought the odor and scratching were just natural, because he probably had not had a good bath since forever. After the waiting period passed he got his bath and his hair was trimmed. To my dismay, I discovered that he had a horrible skin condition. His skin was crusty and oozing and in some spots it was very irritated because he had been scratching so much. I even thought it was mange. I also discovered that he had a discharge from the right eye and his skin was irritated in that area.I thought of taking him to the vet, but first I decided to do some research in the Internet and I came across this book at Amazon. I have not read the whole book yet, but I thumbed through it and read, among other items, the sections that were pertinent to my dog's condition. I am happy to report that, after following the book's advice, my dog's skin is now in perfect condition. He is not miserable any more, no scratching, no sores, no crusts. The bare spot on the inside of his right eye has has all but disappeared and the discharge has cleared completely.I am not saying that I will never have to take my pet to the vet because I have this book. In fact, in several sections of the book Dr. Tedaldi suggests the pet should be taken to the vet right away. However, I know for a fact that I saved several hundred dollars and paid for the book many times over with just the advice that I got for the problems described above.The book has 304 pages. It has a table of contents and an index, and is divided into 18 Parts. Part 1 lists what a dog owner needs in his/her Canine First-Aid Kit and some basic information on first-aid treatments. The remaining Parts and sub-parts describe the conditions a dog may present. I am not going to list all the parts and sub-parts because they are very numerous, but some of the titles are: My dog is bleeding from her eye; My dog has irritated skin on her face; My dog has dark areas on his skin; My dog is gulping or swallowing strangely; My dog has something stuck in his paw; etc., etc. Each Part and sub-part follows a uniform format. First Dr. Tedaldi describes what to look for, then he explains what to do. Also included in every Part and sub-part are frames entitled "Warning" and "When to Get to the Vet". The book has a few photos and drawings as well. I found this book to be very well organized, extremely useful, clear and informative.

Excellent source for any kind of problem or any area of your dog that has a problem. Good advice about what you can deal with yourself and what needs to be seen by a veterinarian.

Dr. Jake saved my collie's life when as a 5-month old she snatched a knee-hi stocking and decided to swallow it. I called him in a panic -- I did not want to hustle her into the life threatening surgery that loomed -- and he presented an easy alternative that's in the book. So I took her outside, turkey basted a couple of spoonfuls of hydrogen peroxide into her (not too much, read the book!), she looked puzzled and weirded out, up comes the stocking, and off she went to play after a bit of loving. In person, Jake Tedaldi is the absolute BEST VET EVER, and his book will put him into your home even if he can't be there to meet you and your pet in the flesh. Super easy and fast to use, easy to follow and understand, best and most practical dog health reference book I've ever seen. Thanks Dr. J!

It's a bit repetitive, the solution or answer takes you back to another chapter. Good for common problems. Gives you some information to tell your Vet

this book is great, the writer,who is a vet covers every possible thing you can think of, I purchased three, one for myself and the other two for gifts. Everyone is thrilled with the book, naturally you don't want anything to be wrong with your dog, but when it happens the answers are all in the book. I can't say enough about it, it is a great book and a great buy.

Love the sections as they are presented. I've already used this for a number of minor things that have happened, typically allergies or small scratches.

A good solid book on dog health and when to call the vet and when something just may be a little blip in the day. I realize a lot of info on the internet these days, but I still like to have something on-hand with great realistic rational info.

Great book - the author gives you a hands on expert guidance with so many things that could arise. Should be in every dog owner library.
