I have been nervously awaiting this book for years. My first encounter with Manchester came when volume one first came out. I was a child, and I went to visit my grandmother (who was in London during the Blitz); she held the book up to show me what she was reading. "The man." she said. "The great, great man."Years later, I read the first two volumes almost in one sitting - couldn't put them down - and have reread large parts of them over the years (every time I looked some piece up I'd find myself sitting down for an hour or two because I couldn't stop). I remember when Finest Hour reported that the trilogy would never be finished: it was like a punch in the stomach.I had my doubts about the ability of another author to write worthily of Manchester, and I was afraid this volume wouldn't measure up. No need to worry: this is every bit as much a page-turner as the last two volumes. It's not QUITE Manchester - I thought I could feel a bit of a difference in style, somehow - and yet it IS extremely good, much better than I had expected.Like the first two volumes, we begin with a preamble ("The Lion Hunted") in which we are (re-)acquainted with the book's subject. There is a certain amount of repetition of material from the two earlier preambles, but much good new material as well. I've read thousands of pages on Churchill, but even I found some good new anecdotes and quotations here. After that we're hurled right into the middle of the most dramatic days of World War Two. The unexpected, catastrophic defeats; the incompetence and perfidy of the people in charge of France - it doesn't take much from a writer to make this an exciting story, and yet I don't think it has ever been told better than this. Really, just what I had hoped for from Manchester himself. If the later parts of the book don't quite keep the same level of excitement, neither do the events they recount.My only complaint is the ending: really, the book just stops. Read the end of volume II: I would have expected Manchester himself to end with a climactic summary, perhaps returning to his major insight from the start: the central significance of Churchill in history is that he was a product of the late nineteenth century who was able to bring the virtues of the era of his formative years to life again at a time when they were needed, and when the British people were not yet too far from them. Actually, I do have one other complaint, and it's with the publisher: the dust jacket doesn't match the first edition dust jackets of the first two volumes. Doesn't look as good on the shelf as I would have liked.All in all, this is a worthy final volume. Manchester himself would be proud, and there can be no doubt that this trilogy would be Churchill's favourite biography. Highly recommended, to fans of the first two volumes and newcomers alike.

This is an excellent finale to the three book series. I have read an awful lot about Winston Churchill by now. He was by no means a perfect person and this book does not represent him as such. But when it is all said and done,,,, Charles DeGaulle, (who had a complicated relationship with alot of the leaders of the Allies), had the band play Fr'ere Victoire when Churchill came to Paris.... And said it was "Only Justice" that it was so.Papa Victory....Father of the Victory pretty much summed it up. He stood up to Hitler when England was all alone and many in England were trying to figure out how they might arrange a truce. The darkest days of the initial German Invasion... he was in France as the Prime Minister.... He undertook grueling airplane trips to meet with Roosevelt in North Africa and Canada.... he went to Moscow via Africa.... he was not a young man at the time... I was impressed by many things about Churchill, his leadership. His willingness to put his own bacon in the fire without hesitation.... he was a great man and I don't think he is appreciated for how great he was.

The 1st of a 3-part biography of Winston Churchill, covering the first 58 years of Churchill's 91 years, from 1874 to 1932.Some highlights:As a boy he was fascinated with toy soldiers. He would go off to war in India at the age of 21.His father did not like him because Winston did not apply himself in school and he would get into trouble.A tragic school prank was played on his father, Sir Lord Randolph Churchill, when in college. His friends drugged his drink and the next morning Randolph woke up next to a prostitute, who gave him syphilis. This limited relations with his wife, Winston's mother, who became involved with many prominent men.Like his father, Winston aspired to become a member of Parliament (MP). He became a skilled orator, winning the respect of many but also alienating many with his sharp tongue. Early in his political career he was vilified for switching parties. He somehow would win re-elections even though he often had few supporters in Parliament.He married Clementine, with whom he had 5 children, and they would for the rest of their lives exchange great affection for one another. In 1921 they endured the tragic death of their 2½ year old daughter Marigold, who died of septicemia, possibly from the hesitancy of a nanny.He was made head of the British navy. In wanting to relieve the slaughter of thousands in the trenches of WWI, he devised a strategy which would require Germany to take soldiers off the front lines, possibly allowing victory for the Allies. Sail the British navy past Gallipoli and through the Dardanelles Strait and into the Black Sea on Germany's flank. For this failed attempt he was wrongly blamed for many years. Churchill took part in WWI, given the command of a brigade. He was fearless (foolhardy?) and would stand up in the trenches giving instructions to his men while German bullets whizzed by him.Having lived through Britain's golden age of world supremacy, he wanted to maintain British rule over India.He fought depression his whole adult life, and found oil painting as a wonderful distraction.As a schoolboy, studying the Scriptures was part of his curriculum. The day he became head of Britain's navy, Clementine quoted him Psalm 107:23,24: "Those who go down to the sea in ships, who do business on great waters; they have seen the works of the Lord, and His wonders in the deep." And before going to bed that night, Churchill read Deuteronomy 9:1-3: "Hear, O Israel! You are crossing over the Jordan today to go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than you, great cities fortified to heaven, a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom you know and of whom you have heard it said, 'Who can stand before the sons of Anak?' Know therefore today that it is the Lord your God who is crossing over before you as a consuming fire. He will destroy them before you, so that you may drive them out and destroy them quickly, just as the Lord has spoken to you."This is a great book about a great man.

Clearly, directly, and concisely written without the "happy" talk that adds little information. Use of numerous screen shots with balloon numbers that correspond to related commentary in the text is an excellent presentation style. There is one error I found in the book regarding the search among the notes for a specific text phrase. The book does not explain that if you are searching only for that text phrase, you must enclose the text phrase in quotation marks, otherwise, OneNote will locate instances of each word in the text phrase.

Finally I have a book that makes some of even the most sophisticated aspects of OneNote understandable!

Great book...was able to get up and running in under 30 minutes. Also helped me learn some things I didn't know.

Great book for those wishing to expand their expertise in OneNOte. I started using OneNote before I bought the book, but I always like a book to refer to for tips and tricks and things I get stuck on. This is a good size book with nice printing and lots of color pictures. If you are advanced in OneNote this is probably too basic for you. I love it. It is teaching me lots of good stuff.

Big help to max usage.

I cannot be as glowing about this book as the other reviewers so far. I do like Cobb’s Abba, but I am quite unconvinced that it was also Jesus’ Abba. I accept that the characteristics Cobb ascribes to God from the Jewish tradition that shaped Jesus were probably part of how Jesus understood God, but I am not convinced that Jesus necessarily rejected some of the characteristics that Cobb rejects. In other words, I think Cobb may be guilty—as I think many other progressive Christians are—of sifting the evidence so as to find the Jesus he wants to find.I also find Cobb’s extended rant against modernity to be off the mark. What he is really ranting against is scientific materialism, which is the pathology of modernity rather than its true achievement. Christianity will only become increasingly irrelevant if it rejects modernity and turns back to premodern belief. I realize that is not what Cobb is advocating, but the book could leave one confused on that point.As I said, I like Cobb’s Abba. He outlines an understanding and emotional stance toward God that has great merit for progressive Christians. I just think the book has significant weaknesses.

Cobb's book inspires us to work hard and consistently to build a deep and joyful relationship with Abba. This relationship can lead to faith and confidence in the love and empowering power of Abba to work through people to build loving, welcoming, embracing, caring communities - uniting all races, religions, and belief systems.Cobb takes us back to the essence of Jesus' teachings, exposes fallacies in many supposedly Christian beliefs that resulted in abominations like the Holocaust, and explores common ground between Abba's message of unfailing love and the key tenets of other major religions and beliefs.Cobb is a brilliant theologian and philosopher. Those of us without his deep grounding in these fields may have trouble following some of his arguments. Nevertheless, his book is worth reading - and perhaps re-reading - just to be reminded that Abba's deepest desire is to enjoy an intimate parental relationship with each individual on Planet Earth - and the second wish is "like unto it": that we might "love [our] neighbors as ourselves."

I've enjoyed the works of Hartshorne, Griffin, and Mesle (and Griffin and Cobb's "Process Theo" introduction). However, this book was poor quality.Apart from the fact that Cobb's book is absent of scholarly notations (virtually empty of referential evidence for any of his claims), Cobb's premise itself lacks backbone. He claims to be writing about Jesus' Abba, but fails to explain and substantiate why anyone should care what Jesus thought about Abba. In fact, he undermines biblical authority; which begs the question, "Why believe Jesus' teachings at all?" It's not that there isn't evidence for the historical Jesus, but if Jesus wasn't "God" then what makes his beliefs about Abba any better than Muhammad's belief about Allah? Or the mystical incarnation of Krishna?Suffice it to say, Cobb fails on this one. And fails badly.

This book describes the God Jesus and Paul worshiped. This God is not the God that the early and late Churches promote. Their God has very little room to wiggle in view of the science that has developed. It is clear that that God has failed. There is no room for an omnipotent God in todays world. Jesus's God is a gentle nudging God who operates in you and wants the best for you. As a Christian I have been looking for a description of this God who I can believe in and work withThe book is not easy, but in the end it presents a new view of an old God.

I'm not a process person but I found Cobb give language to thoughts and ideas people I serve have. The reason in bought the book was because he would be at a conference I was attending. The book itself was a very loving picture of Abba and a correct critique of credal Christianity.My favorite part of the book was a critique of his own camp and it's failings of creating the atmosphere for Christians to love one God the God of the Bible.Cobb doesn't shy away from his beliefs and because he is able to see the faults in his own tribes thinking gives me the opportunity to really listen. He is as loving in person and his writing and I have a lot of respect for this work.His five points that he considers throughout the book are food for thought and he does a very good job explaining there implications on the church.Thank you Dr Cobb for this book and for signing my copy.

I have read John Cobb's excellent process theology books for years (I'm 82). He integrated in this book his brilliant grasp of the content with his personal faith. I really liked his affirming his own position that for him Jesus is the Way and the Truth and the Life and, yet, with full respect for, and in unconditional dialogue with, those who would disagree. His great wisdom so well articulated in his latter years is a great inspiration for me in my latter years to "keep on keeping on." Thanks John!

I read it with a church book group. It was helpful in debunking the idea of an all powerful domineering God, using scripture and history to explain how some religious traditions had gotten off track, and suggesting an alternate approach.

If you love history, you'll love this story. Some of the things amazed me, like the responsibility given to 12 year old boy, running a trading post, and working off his "bound" obligation. And the history of the Cherokee nation and others in the area. At first I didnt realize that when they were talking about going as far West as possible, they were talking about the Mississippi River and not California. So, this made it a fresh story, one that I had not read before. While they have a disclaimer in the back that you cant believe everything you read in the book, much I was able to verify elsewhere, so I think they were just covering their backs. It is a good way to experience what life was like back then, including love lost and won, traditions, attitudes, wages/trading, land ownership, cross-cultures. The author works out ways to add a lot of educational material to the story without sounding like a lecture (like having the white boy adopted by an Indian chef and really understand their way of living from the boy's perspective...oh, and yes, the story does carry on to his adulthood) This was not a "dry" book, but full of adventures, and moved along at a good pace. I really liked the main character, and cared about him, and those he became attached to.

I should start by saying that I'm the type of reader who inhales books, admittedly usually reading far too quickly and then moving on without committing a whole lot of a book to memory. "Thirteen Moons" was a tremendous exception. The best way I have of describing Charles Frazier's writing here is to compare it to a hard candy that has some sort of amazing flavor -- something that you just want to keep sucking on and savoring until it's whittled down to nothing.There are more than a few reviewers who have criticized this novel for the same reason that I praise it, and it could be that those readers weren't looking to sit down and "smell the roses" of some truly beautiful descriptions of scenes, feelings and situations, as this is the most savory writing I've come across in a very long time. The author truly seems to enable the reader to inhabit this lost world, and that's a sign not just of talent, but of outstanding commitment to a sense of place and time, serving to remind anyone interested in writing fiction that setting is more than just a background -- when done with such precision, it's a character in itself.Will is a dynamic character who literally grows up as an eyewitness to a tragic period of American history. While Frazier could have easily fallen into the disappointing "noble savage" theme that all too often characterizes attempts at stories centered on indigenous people, he has instead taken the time to breathe life, noble and ignoble, into the Cherokee characters. (I adored Bear.) The historical research is so meticulous and this era is so painstakingly created that, with the exception of actual eyewitness accounts, I daresay there's very little else that truly invites the reader to examine and inhabit this period of history in such detail.Will is a character who truly grows and changes in his attitudes, actions and worldviews over the course of the novel. The love story is a bit less finely-drawn, as the character of Claire never seems fully developed, and the reader never truly knows how she feels about Will, how she feels about her husband, or even how she really feels about removal, despite the fact that she is among the removed. As a whole, female characters don't seem to be Charles Frazier's strong suit -- characters like Will here and Inman in "Cold Mountain" have always felt more real and relatable to me than have any of his women, with the possible exception of Ada Monroe in "Mountain."A glorious effort I was truly sorry to see end. I bookmarked many passages and will no doubt be reading "Thirteen Moons" more than once over the years.

Cold Mountain was a literary success: its setting, characters, and themes made it a great novel that became a great movie.Frazier has done it again. His imagined characters, their relationships, the historic detail, the setting, the philosophic commentary of the literate backwoods narrator--all these and more make this work of fiction a wonderful reading experience.I was especially impressed with the voice of the narrator: due to Frazier's expert creation of his first person narrator, he was able to achieve a literary style of admirable dimentions. The language is inventive in its diversity. Descriptions are a treat to the minds eye. Cliches are rendered new. Similes and other figures of speech abound, newly invented. In short, this reader loved the use language in this novel. There is much to be appreciated in this novel, so full of life from a wonderful observer.

The author has developed a cast of characters and a story that he admits is a work of fiction, but relates historical accuracies. The unsettling of the Cherokee peoples, vacating them from their own lands is a sad but true part of American history. Forcing a migration west, families and tribes were disrupted from what was their normal lives. An orphaned, young white lad is sent into that environment to run a trading post. He becomes immersed in the Cherokee culture and is adopted into the tribe. He studies law and finds success in commerce, the law and even is elected to federal office representing the many landowners in the area. The writing is what one would expect from the words of a story teller, with the usual lapse away from the syntax of the written word. Except for a few digressions in the relating, my only complaint is that it is, after all, a work of fiction. I really wanted those characters to be real people. An excellent story well told.

A masterful story of a difficult time for native Americans, the South and a developing country. Frazier know his country well. A better novel is rarely found.

You have to spend money to make money.The information in this book was very good, and the instructions aren't bad. The issues are:A. While the cover is bright and colorful, the pictures in the book are all black and white. It does say that on the cover, but unless you zoom in and look you don't really notice in the ad.B. You can get very good detail in black and white if it's done correctly, even better than color in some instances. This was not one of those times. Now I don't know if this is a printing quality issue or not in this case. Several of the pictures use black paracord for the demonstration. This would have been fine if the picture quality was better or the lighting was different, but in many cases it makes it really hard to see and follow the overs and unders of the various knots. The pictures that use "colored" paracord are much easier to make out and follow.The book does have everything I was looking for, it just takes a little longer to pull off since you have to read and look at the pics more closely and a little longer than one usually would otherwise. Being a visual/tactile learner I would have preferred better pics.All in all the book is still useable and accomplishes that it was intended to do.

I bought several for gifts. Nick does a great job introducing you to the basics of wrapping. No book has the ability to show you how to make a Turks Head knot with drawings or photos, but with this book and a little help from YouTube, (The Backyard Bowyer), you can do what you need to do. This is a fantastic starter for those wishing to dabble, and possibly get serious about using paracord for more than what it was intended for. I highly recommend this for Preppers, Survivalists, Scouts, and military types looking to think outside the box when it comes to wrapping handles of any type, including knives, but also cases, etc.

Absolutely a great book for the intermediate level person. The pictures are all in Black and white, but are very detailed in directions. this book is what has helped me choose a wrapping style for my Steering wheel. I'm very satisfied with the book and will be using for many more projects that I will need in the future.

I should have figured out from the title that this book was mainly about wraps and not about smaller things. If you want to know how to wrap handles with paracord this book is for you. If you want to learn how to make bracelets or smaller items, you will be left disappointed.

Excellent Book! This is by far the best book I have found on paracord projects, especially those pertaining to knife handle wrapping! The instructions for other projects in the book are very clear and easy to follow as well; in addition, I found the turk's head knot tying instructions to be the best I've seen in printed books on the subject.

This is a perfect book for paracord wrapping. Yes the pictures are in black and white-the cords are black and white too to show what is what.

Got this for my grandkids. Has some good wraps that can be used with regular cordage for doing sailor rope work. Brilliant! There is no rating high enough for any of St. Maximus writings. For those who enjoy digging into dense Church father material St. Maximus is bar none the best. This book gives you a slight insight into the character of St. Maximus for his trial and becoming a confessor of the faith. This is helpful for those who are just beginning reading St. Maximus. His 400 chapters on Charity is challenging for the rational power of the soul but oh so rich! I already know about his life and writings as he is my 2nd Patron saint so I skipped the description pages by the author so it maybe helpful to those who are not familiar with St. Maximus.

To borrow the opening line of Andrew Louth's introduction on Maximus, "St Maximus the Confessor was born in AD 580 in the Byzantine Empire, or the Roman Empire, as he and its inhabitants would have called it." Maximus is considered a Byzantine theologian (or Eastern Roman theologian) par excellence and universally considered the most important Christian theologian in the Seventh Century. Maximus (in the vein of those coming after him, such as John of Damascus) was a compiler in his theology. As a result of reading of the Fathers one will see much influence in his thought of the Cappadocians (especially the two Gregories) and their friend Evagrius (whose ascetical treatises have influenced much of the later monastic writings such as those found in the Philokalia). Diadochos of Photiki and Denys the Aeropagite's thought and ideas are also to be found in his writings. Maximus' genius is shown in his original presentation of the Father's thought. His writings for the most part are all occasional documents. The Ascetical Life gives advice to young monks in a question and answer format involving a (novice) Brother and an (experienced) Old Man. The Four Centuries on Love represent probably the most enjoyable and therefore the most popular of Maximus' writings. The style is aphoristic, with truths being presented as a single sentence and sometimes as a paragraph. They are profound thoughts and insights that are meant to be meditated on. Their brevity is also meant to aide in their memorization. Naturally being called Centuries there are a hundred aphorisms to be found, four-hundred total in the Four Centuries. Sherwood did the English speaking world a service by translating The Ascetical Life and the Four Centuries on Love into English for the first time in 1955.Sherwood's introduction displays an adequate familiarity regarding his subject matter which is not surprising considering he had done previous writing and research on Maximus. Being a Roman Catholic scholar (who taught at the Pontifical Institute of St Anselm, in Rome no less), often times Maximus' thought is contrasted or explained against Catholic thought. His lengthy introduction was only surpassed recently by Louth. The only real critique I have of the author's translation involves the archaic use of English. Charity was favored over the now conventional term love. But his archaisms, especially when translating Maximus' quotations of Scripture, will only be a slight annoyance to most readers. The meaning of the text is still apparant enough. While I cannot speak on the Greek text underlying the Ascetical Life, I have translated much of the Four Centuries on Love. The Greek text is fairly straightforward and simple to translate in comparison to Maximus' other more profound theological works. Berthold and the translators of the Philokalia had the advantage of Sherwood's translation, so while theirs are superior, they deviate little from the foundational work of Sherwood. So this volume gives the English speaking world access to the entry level thought of Maximus, which had previously been esoteric, in an affordable hardback format. I would have to say any addition of Maximus' corpus to one's library is a wise decision.

Such an easy read for a difficult subject, had lots of tips, including how to make sure to get someone served. And actual practical tips. It makes it feel like a much less scary thing to do. The tone is friendly, and as many Nolo books, avoid legalese.

If you've never gone through the court system before this book will help take some of the "mystery" out of it. Helps you in preparation for your case and how to deal with some unexpected situations. I do recommend it.

I found the book interesting and informative. I plan to test the information within the next couple of months. I felt a little research was needed prior to using the system and at this point I feel this book was a good choice.
