This is certainly an interesting read for people who, as I do, are into music theory, but not an easy one. I bought it because of the buzz around Jacob Collier's "Negative Harmony", and I wanted to have first-hand experience with the base material.As Collier explains, the author builds his theory above the idea that there is an "undertone series", symmetric to the natural overtone harmonic series, but the similarity with Collier's negative harmony ends here. While Collier's idea yields fun chord substitutions, Levy uses his geotropic conception to derive 4 alternative ("natural") cadencial orders.I found the overall work truly mind expanding, even if I am not advanced enough in my practice of music for this essay to be immediately of use to me. There will be a day when I'll be looking for new ideas to compose and make music, and that day, I'll certainly be glad that I've read about Levy's polarity concept, his "absolute" vs. "telluric" minor chords, and the alternative cadential movements that come with these concepts.

This book is a gem and the idea of polarity being an "unheard" but functional aspect of the reality of tonal gravity is very rewarding. I think it is connected to The Lydian Chromatic Concept of George Russell and I would not be surprised if Russell was aware of it as he developed his ideas.

The topic of Negative Harmony is hot on the internet right now since Jacob Collier mentioned it. This is the book he talked about and I don't know of another on the topic. There are a number of article on Negative, but not a lot of books, so if interested this it.

This would be a 3-star for some and a 5-star for others. I always want to be fair in my reviews, and I will try to be fair this time.Ernst Levy is clearly someone who knew his music. He was a world-class composer. I do not wish to diminish who he was at all.I just want to be clear about this book, if you are thinking about making a purchase. In this book, Mr. Levy has taken music, placed it into a test tube, shaken it, and poured it out. It is filled with charts and the theory of music, but music is not charts and theory is it?...really. Music is sound and hopefully a sound that elevates the human spirit. I will let more qualified people determine whether his compositions do that, or you can determine that yourself via the internet.If you are looking for a book that is a highly technical theory book about music, then this is your book. Be aware that, as often the case with professors, good communication does not always seem to be a high priority. For example, here is a sentence in the book: "The data on both levels will then become mutually symbolic." What?! I have no idea what that means.This is not a book on how to compose music. Not really. It is not a book on how to arrange or orchestrate either. I say all of this to merely let the potential buyer understand the book he/she is contemplating purchasing. It is my opinion that this book is not an easy read, simply because the author does not communicate that well via the written word, i.e., it is my opinion that the author writes to impress; not to communicate a concept/idea. The book is only 99 pages, including the appendix, but do not buy the book, if you think that those 99 pages will be a fast read. You will have to "chew" on each sentence. But, I am not saying not to buy it. I simply want you to understand what it is before you buy it.

Interesting and useful. Could have been written more clearly with less alambicated explanations that are not always making light into the issue. Could be though just the fault of the reduction made to the original writings of mr. Levy.

Mary P. has done it again. I'm a homeschooling Dad with degrees in computer science and mathematics. My dad is a high school math teacher of 30 years experience. Neither of us has ever seen a better treatment for high school of this subject. My daughter was confused by Saxon's methods and explanations, went over to the Dolciani book, and says "Oh, that's how you do it!". Also a more rigorous and in depth treatment than Abeka's Algebra 2. My only complaint/wish was that the computer programming aspects of the exercises were done for C rather than Basic or Pascal, but that's easily fixed by anyone that knows C.

Excellent book in great condition. This is a good, solid, straightforward method for learning algebra. Thanks!

Definitely a classic, used as the Algebra 2 textbook for honors classes in many top high schools. If you're good on math, this is the book you need to take you to the level you are looking for. But if you are not in honors class, it may be too hard for you.

I had an earlier (1980) edition of this book during my high school days. I remember the class fondly. I still occassionally reference the book now 20 years later and it still seems well written, cogent, and an excellent book to cover the subject matter. I do agree that this is not spoon feeding material, but for teachers who really want to convey the subject matter and for children who have the prerequisite math skills and any interest in math, I think this book is right on target.

I got this book a week ago and I thought it would'nt be good for some reason. but my child tried it and really understood it, the later chapters got harder for her(but they're suposed to) but she managed do to the good examples and easy format. she says it was almost easier than algebra 2! like it, awesome.

I was looking for a textbook for my daughter for homeschool and ran across this. This was my textbook in high school! Very good book.

Refreshing! Enjoyable! Hope Callaghan’s mysteries are entertaining, and just good, clean, laugh-out-loud, funny at times. The main characters, Mercedes and her mother, Carlita, have moved from New York to Savannah, where they are establishing a new life. Their relationship is becoming one of friends, as they work together to renovate two buildings into apartments and businesses. Working toward these goals, they meet some interesting characters, make some good friends, and have a few “this shouldn’t be happening to us” experiences. Callaghan’s descriptions of Savannah are lively and magical. I want to live there. In Carlita’s apartment building. And be her friend. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series!

What a tough mother/daughter team! On their own for the first time, Carlita and Mercedes move from New York to Savannah, GA. No one knows of their mob family ties they left behind. They have to remodel the property they were left by their husband and father when he was killed. They meet friends and foes as they work to set up the life they want. It is entertaining and addictive reading.

I liked them...I liked the characters. I don't understand the laugh-out-loud funny comments by some reviewers, however...I have read all 9 of her novels now, and there was maybe a chuckle or two (usually over Elvira), but not hilarious! Maybe smile or chuckle-worthy!They are entertaining, no big action scenes, but a fairly interesting mystery. However, the whole book works toward the mystery and then it all seems solved 'off-screen.' :-)However, sometimes you just need a calm, soothing, easy-to-read book to take you out of the current rat race and this certainly does it. Also, having been to Savannah recently, I have really enjoyed the descriptions of the city. That was a big plus.If you don't want to do the heavy-lifting with a novel, this fits the bill...very soothing read at the beach or before bed. Enjoyed immensely.

I don't agree that this was a laugh out loud book. I don't recall really laughing at all. However, I did enjoy this book quite a lot. I could feel the nervous tension in making the decision to move to Savannah. I could understand her frustrations in her questions about her husband's faithfulness. And yes I'm hooked, I'm going to have to find out what happens when they make it to Savannah for good. I love things that hope has written and have read nearly all of her book series so far. I'm sure I will enjoy this series as well!Book two was quite Good. We learn more about Savannah as well as getting a better look at some of the ASA. Looking forward to the next book.

This book set was a very fast read and one that held my interest throughout. The characters were well defined and the suspense was consistent throughout. Have enjoyed other books by this author and will continue to follow her.

Carlita had been married to a mobster although upon his death, her husband requested his children get out of the lifestyle. When he dies, she tries to get her children out of the mob. She finds a deed to three buildings in Savannah and some gems, so she takes them and leaves with her daughter, Mercedes, to start a new life. Carlita thinks if she fixes up the place she chose that her sons will come. Son, Venie, comes there, but Tony hasn’t stayed, yet. This is a fun to read series.

So fun. This mother-daughter duo are so great to watch as they become strong women who learn to take care of each other, and their new friends and family. Plus the backdrop of Savannah I love. It is a great city, and I love that this story keeps you with all walks of life characters, not just the wealthy.

In the depth of the winter, I finally learned within me there lay an invincible summer.”Camus rebellion is an act of awakening.He reserves especially harsh words for what he calls the ‘dandy’: “The dandy creates his own unity by aesthetic means. But it is an aesthetic of singularity and negation. ‘To live and die before a mirror’: that, according to Baudelaire, was the dandy’s slogan. (…) He can only exist by defiance. (…) The dandy rallies his forces and creates a unity for himself by the very violence of his refusal. Profligate, like all people without a rule of life, he is coherent as an actor. But an actor implies a public; the dandy can only play a part by setting himself in opposition. He can only be sure of his own existence by finding it in the expression of others’ faces. Other people are his mirror.” I think we all know who the “dandies” who claim the mantle of “rebellion” (maybe ‘resistance’?) are today, don’t we?In turn Camus reserves his greatest praise for the novel. “The world of the novel is only a rectification of the world we live in, in pursuance of mans’ deepest wishes. (…) The suffering, the illusion, the love are the same. The heroes speak our language, have our weaknesses and our strength. (…) But they, at least, pursue their destinies to the bitter end (…) they complete things that we can never consummate.” Camus, a novelist himself, sees the novel as the fulfillment of his rebellious existential nihilism, achieved through acts of creation which are the consummation of the human experience. “Every act of creation, by its mere existence, denies the world of master and slave. The appalling society of tyrants and slaves in which we survive will find its death and transfiguration only on the level of creation.”Camus existential nihilism is powerful because it is not bitter. It takes no time shaking its fist at fellow man. Nor does it shake its fist at the creator in heaven, accepting what we have here as our lot and finding the joy in our acts of rebellious creation. “’I believe more and more,’ writes Van Gogh, ‘that God must not be judged on this earth. It is one of His sketches that has turned out badly’.” In that, at least, Camus and I are in full agreement.

Camus asks us not to draw boundaries to exclude and create the "other," but to mark spaces of value. Great stuff!

I like to guide myself as much as possible, so I can move at my own (slow) pace.This guide is comes complete with everything a visitor could want: a map of the layout of the museums, short and long itineraries, and incredibly detailed and engaging descriptions of each of the galleries and the items they hold.I was pleasantly surprised to find that the guide also has a similarly detailed guide to St. Peter's Basilica as well, including the necropolis underneath with the tomb of St. Peter. There is also a good map of the entire Vatican city-state as well.Everyone who wants to make the most of their visit to both the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica should buy this guide from one of the sellers here on Amazon so they can prepare well in advance.
