I have recently been watching what I eat more carefully, with particular emphasis on lowering sugar and carbohydrates in my diet. This approach has been helpful to me in losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight. This is a very small book, and is really a shopping aid more than anything else. It explains what foods are good and bad in different categories (e.g. "Fresh Produce Department", "Beans", "Beverages", etc.) It is not a detailed diet plan in and of itself (though a separate book is available if you desire it), although it does outline the basic tenants of the "Sugar Busters" diet. There is a useful section on reading labels and what they mean, and the principles behind the shopping lists are also briefly discussed. One problem is the specificity of some of the items in certain categories. For instance salmon or sardines may be easy to find as they are commodities, items like "Mestemacher Organic Sunflower Seed Bread" are not, and are difficult if not impossible to find in some areas. The best feature of the book is that in every category of foods, there is an unambiguous "Unacceptable" list, warning you what not to buy and eat (e.g. baked beans or pork and beans). There is an edition newer than mine now available, and I recommend buying the latest version you can find, although I have seen no reason to replace my 1999 edition. The book is very inexpensive, supremely compact, and simple to read and use. Because most of the pages are large-font lists the book is extremely quick to read (I just re-read my copy cover to cover in less than 20 minutes), but this isn't really a book to read, it's a reference book designed for repeated use. In that capacity, it does well for anyone who desires to limit their sugar intake.

I have always had difficulty controlling my weight but ( on the advice of my MD) I bought this book and simply followed the advice within. I lost 70lbs over the course of a year and - six years later - I have kept it off. Don't think of it as a diet, think of it as a lifestyle change. I feel healthier in many ways, even my shoe size became smaller! It is not a 'miracle weight loss' fad diet. It is simply healthy eating.I highly recommend this.

After losing 79 lbs on a clean, but difficult diet in about 1 year, yo-yoing up and down that last 20 lb loss (ending on the up end), and stabalizing on a low carb diet for two enjoyable months with little weight loss, but good sleep, soft skin, but too much saturated fat and meat, it is time to balance the nutritional scales, re-add some beans and whole grains (dying for a small bowl of oatmeal!), and finally achieve my goal weight/best health on an eating plan I think I can enjoy and feel great on for a lifetime. Will try to give an update between August and October 2017, after giving it a real chance. My petite sister-in-law said it was the only plan that finally helped her lose that last 5-7 lbs of fat she couldn't lose before (she had a little belly pouch).

Even without working out, this diet and set of simple guidelines is really easy to follow, and helped me finally break through with weight loss. I'm a 34-year-old guy, and now weigh less than I have in 10 years. I don't work out much either, as I'm sure I'd see much more dramatic results if I did. Try it out....it _works_.

At a screening session last year with a reputable endocrinologist in the Atlanta area, I was advised to get my hands on this book. Prior to then, I had never heard of it. I will always remember the “carb cutter” trends of 2004, and all the hoopla around the Atkins diet; like many of us, I’ve always had a dismissing attitude with every fad diet that comes and goes like a thief in the night. The premise of Sugar Busters, is that there are “good” carbs and “bad” carbs. The 2004 zero-carb trend never went into detail like this. You’d see products everywhere that had “low carb” on the label and if you were anything like me you felt like something was amiss. The authors go to great lengths to provide the honest truth about carbs-that some of them are good for us because their glycemic index is low, meaning a person will obtain adequate nutrients and energy reserves, but also stable blood sugar levels. Also, from a historical perspective, our ancestors had better reason to be healthier and less overweight than we as a modern society are. A much less industrialized and less hectic pace of life could have played a part, but also they did not have access to refined sugar and so much unhealthy processed foods. Yes, it’s true that sugar was a cash crop way back when, but if I’m not mistaken, it was called “sugar cane” which is more like its raw form. Did I use the term “cash crop” in regards to sugar? That could be why it has flourished to this day to be such a negative influence on health-Same reason we are bombarded with ads on innumerable weight loss and diet pills, drugs, etc, …follow the money trail. It was a real eye-opener for me to learn that “enriched” and “refined” do not mean what I thought it did; in regards to flour and grain products. I guess the words just sound good, in some way. Basically, the food processing procedures leach out so much in the way of essential nutrients that they must be replaced, ergo, “enriched with…” If this sounds bad to you, you are right, and correct in that this chemical food processing also causes a spike in the glycemic index of foods. If you were a whiz in chemistry class, you will totally understand when you read the chapters that discuss blood sugar, insulin, and the human metabolism. The chapter that discussed fats (26) had me thinking of an episode of a TV program “American Dad” in which trans fats have been made illegal to the public; the mother protests that she can only cook palatable meals using this potentially harmful byproduct, and the son becomes a transport mule for trans fats. The “skinny on fats” will really open your eyes a little to the misleading pop culture world of “low fat” this and that. Why you are not losing weight? Because to compensate for being “low-fat” food products often contain unhealthy refined sugar and flour ingredients. Someexcellent, high-caliber recipes are included as well; they are somewhat advanced as they were contributed by award-winning chefs; the chicken recipes look worthwhile (and tasty!) enough for me to tackle at some point. It is from reading this book that I have started baking sweet potatoes in place of the traditional, (but higher-GI) white ones. The tougher part may be, for me anyway, to convert my husband ( who is also Type 2 diabetic) to the Sugar Busters way of eating (Bless his heart, he thinks of barbecue as a main food group )If I can finally break away from the “diet pill” racket (fortunately I exercise some common sense here and go with trusted, safe brands) it will be worth something for me which is why I give four stars rather than five. It could be the only reason I never heard of this book until my doctor visit. Sadly, there’s money in diet pills, weight-loss gimmicks…but not as much money in advising people how to eat right, like our ancestors. Read this book as this is the kind of info that will save you bookoos of $$$ in medical expenses one day!

excellent book, dropped my sugar numbers drastically in just a couple weeks. and just plain eating better foods, not going hungry, seem to have more energy. white potatoes, white bread, rice are worse for you then eating straight spoonfulls of sugar. a good book for anyone, even if your not fat or borderline diabetic

Great book that helps people understand how to eat correctly in regards to sugar consumption. A great book for diabetics, people who have the possibility to become diabetic, people who want to lose weight or for those who suffer from other health problems. It's not a diet, diets are temporary. This is a change in eating habits. Highly recommended.
