I've really enjoyed the story line and characters so far. Also the editing has been much better than a lot of books.

The first half of this book continued in the same way as book 1, with characters facing predicaments and finding ways out of them. Then it seemed like the author was in a hurry to get to the end. All of a sudden the book started skipping ahead and glossing over events that would have made the book interesting. How exactly did Ella destroy two prison camps and free all the prisoners? How did the armies on her side turn the tide? I almost stopped reading this series after this book, but luckily book 3 goes back to the type of storytelling in book 1. All of these books are written in an almost childish style, with truly awful writing sometimes, but the storytelling is engrossing for the most part. When book 2 lost the engrossing storytelling, it became almost unreadable.

War can be and quite frankly is. There are times in a lot of fantasy books that war is glossed over ot it is not written in detail or the battles are not truly spoken about let alone what happens in each camp be it good or evil, especially evil. That force that they are working so hard against. James Maxwell Showed exactly how ugly it can really be. I will not tell you what happened only that The story arch truly moved and wove its way around all sides through the different camps and how each saw their part in this conquest.Hope is such a small word but yet is a very powerful one as well and Maxwell also used and weaved the light of hope through the forces in strong ways that you may find yourself gripping your book or bouncing your legs on the edge of your seat as you read. The pictures painted throughout were masterfully done and one that carried me from the beginning to the end and Now am ready for their next chapter......

The Hidden Relic is the second book in James Maxwell’s “Evermen Saga”. This one is set right after the events of book one. The Primate was dealt a blow in his plan to take over with his black army, but he is not finished. He goes north to enlist the help of a people who were exiled long ago because of their power of re-animation of the dead. Along with their army’s strength, and their knowledge of how to extract essence from human bodies, the Primate plans to make another attempt at a worldwide reign. He has another trick up his sleeve as well. He has stumbled upon a book left by the Evermen and it tells of a source of power, a weapon, that could be the deciding factor in the war. The only question is can he find it before the Akari realize they’ve been double crossed? On the other side, Miro, Ella, Killian, and Amber each must make their own sacrifices and play their own roles if they are to stop the Primate before all is lost. This book is much like the first one in that the pacing is quick, the world building is very solid, and the characters are well developed (and continue to develop throughout the story). These are the first books that I’ve read from Maxwell, but I can certainly see why he’s such a popular author. Both of these first two books have been extremely well done. There is a circumstance or situation here or there that was settled a little too conveniently or a solution that presented itself at just the right moment, but that’s forgivable considering how good the rest of the story is. Two books in, I wouldn’t call the Evermen Saga a masterwork, but I would say that it’s certainly been a fun ride that is hard to put down. With this one Maxwell has guaranteed that I’ll finish the series and in all likelihood, read his other series as well. Another great effort and most definitely worth the read.

The first in this aeries was flawed but engaging. This sequel is messy, redundant, and bland. The paasage of time is even more difficult to track than it was in the first. The characters have little personality to distinguish them from the others, and this holds true even as new cheacters appear and others are given more time. That which was engaging and interesting in the first is sucked dry in the second. Meanwhile, the story is not believable (even in a fantasy context) because the human interactions are inauthentic. The battles are really quite awful, with little frame or sense and much replication.

There was some good elements to the story. First the desert people were impressive and the sentinel was clever. The plotline was creative. Unfortunately it was so predictable it was as if a teacher wrote an outline of a good book and said " follow the pattern". Two woman in a prison camp....two woman in a warrior camp... Two men fighting for the love of one woman....the ending of these plot threads had little to no variation than the plot devices I learned in my high school literature class... The author is very discriptive and has a good world building technique but he does not use the same wonderful creativity in his characters. As an editor I would have ruthlessly cut the fighting scenes down to a less prodominate place in the plot. I would have asked for more humanity in the characters and strengthen the journeys the characters made from one place to another. It seemed to me that they jumped from place to place with no thought on how they actually got there while the war scenes were discribed in such detail they were boring to read.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the Evermen Saga. Very good writing and excellent action right up to the end. Well thought out and varied magic systems; each of the major houses have differing abilities all powered by essence. Good character development. An enjoyable twist near the end. Sometimes the conclusions of sagas disappoint or smack of deus ex machina but this was a satisfying read from book one to book four. I even went so far as to purchase Seven Words of Power, a book of short stories set in the same world as the Evermen Saga. My only complaint is that , like elixir, this saga was habit forming and now I need more ...
