Keuka Outlet Trail County: Yates Endpoints: Elm St./NY 54A beween Burns Terrace and Lake View Cemetery (Penn Yan) to Seneca St. between Main St. and Margaret St. (Dresden) Mileage: 6.7 Type: Rail-Trail Roughness Index: 1–2 Surfaces: Asphalt, Ballast, Dirt, Gravel Uses: Walking, Biking, Wheelchair Accessible, In-Line Skating, Mountain Biking, Fishing, Horseback Riding, Cross-Country Skiing, Snowmobiling The Keuka Outlet Trail offers a sinuous route of nearly 7 miles between Penn Yan and Dresden in New York’s Finger Lakes Region. The rail-trail follows a railroad corridor that traced a former canal dug along the natural drainage of Keuka (KYOO-ka) Lake Outlet from Seneca Lake to Keuka Lake. Today, the scenes of former millsite ruins along the watercourse add another dimension to the natural beauty of cascading waterfalls and rocky ravines. Settlers moved into the area in the late 1780s, and by 1790 the first mill began operation on Crooked Lake Outlet, as it was then called, based on the “crooked” shape of Keuka Lake. By 1830 as many as 40 mills and 12 hydropower plants operated along the stream. New York’s canal-building boom led to construction in 1833 of the Crooked Lake Canal, which required 27 locks along its course. The canal never made money and was abandoned in 1873. The Penn Yan and New York Railroad Co. opened a branch in 1884 that used the towpath as its corridor. Later renamed Fall Brook Railroad, it was acquired by New York Central, which stopped using the route after extensive damage from Hurricane Agnes in 1972. From Penn Yan, the trail climbs an easy grade to Dresden. Both towns are tourism destinations with plenty of services. The first 1.3 miles in Penn Yan are paved, and the remainder of the Keuka Outlet Trail is gravel, ballast, and dirt. The Friends of the Outlet have installed numerous interpretive signs along the route; you can also visit its website to learn about trail events. Snowmobiling is allowed east of Penn Yan. Penn Yan is named for its early transplants from Pennsylvania (PENN) and New England (YAN-kees). The trail begins at a sports complex at Keuka Lake’s northern tip and joins the Keuka Outlet in 0.4 mile. Crossing under Main Street at 0.7 mile, one of the area’s first mills―Birkett Mills―still operates across the stream. After Cherry Street, you’ll soon be on the unpaved portion of the trail. You’ll pass nearly a dozen old lock sites along the canal, as well as seven former millsites, some deteriorated to crumbling brick walls or a set of rusty gears. At 3.5 miles, you’ll likely hear the roar of Seneca Mills Falls before you see it, as it drops more than 40 feet in three cascades at the former paper millsite, now a popular picnic area. This is the only spot where you’ll leave the old towpath and drop into the former canal channel as you pass through Lock 17. The trail follows the creek through a narrow glacier-cut gorge for the next 3 miles. The Cascade Mill waterfall appears 1.3 miles past Seneca Mills Falls and is one of the few millsites on the eastern half of the trail. A covered picnic pavilion here educates visitors with interpretive displays. At 3.1 miles past Seneca Mills Falls, you’ll cross under the NY 14 overpass on your way to the Dresden trailhead in another 0.2 mile. Seneca Lake is 0.5 mile east. Contact: keukaoutlettrail.org Directions To reach the trailhead in Penn Yan from I-90, take Exit 42 and turn right onto NY 14 after passing through the tollbooth. Go 0.7 mile and turn right onto Cross Road, and then go 1.8 miles and turn left onto Pre-Emption Road/County Road 6. Go 18.4 miles and turn right onto NY 54/Clinton St. Go 1.5 miles, turn left onto Main St., and then go 0.2 mile and turn right onto Elm St./NY 54A. Go 0.5 mile and look for Penn Yan Sports Complex on the left. The trail starts at the rear of the parking lot. To reach the trailhead in Dresden from I-90, take Exit 42 and turn right onto NY 14 after passing through the tollbooth. Go 5.4 miles and turn right onto NY 14/Seneca St., and then go 0.2 mile and turn left onto NY 14/S. Main St. Go 13.2 miles and turn left onto Main St., and then go about 200 feet and turn right onto Seneca St. Go 0.2 mile and look for parking and the trail on the right.

Living in New England, we're fortunate to have our choice of "sugar shacks" to purchase maple syrup, locally tapped. We have made three or four recipes from this book since we received it and they haven't disappointed! We made the Maple-Walnut Oat Muffins (twice!). These were the best, homemade muffins ever! They were not overly sweet, barely tasting the maple syrup, but it added just enough sweetness. We are also gluten free, and this recipe was easily adapted. The combination it called for was ground oats (you can purchase oat flour instead, works the same way), as well as whole wheat and all purpose white flour. The first time, I didn't have oat flour (or whole oats to grind). I subbed out oat bran and used a gluten free all purpose flour in place of the whole wheat/white. Came out super! Second time, I used the oat flour and they came out equally as well, but a bit more dense. I actually think we prefere the oat bran. They were amazing for breakfast, either warmed a bit in the microwave or grilled lightly. Adding a bit of maple syrup on top (or maple cream ~ yum!) makes them a real treat! They freeze really well too.We made the Green Bean Salad (served room temp or cold) ~ sooo good for lunch or served as a side with any type of meat. I can't wait to try this again with green beans from my garden!We also made the Maple Baked Beans. Way better than any canned baked beans! We did cheat, and use two cans of Aduki (can use any type of bean you like) instead of the dried navy/pea beans they called for, only because I forgot to buy them:( ~ that being said, adjust the baking time accordingly (you don't need to bake canned beans for three hours). I already bought the dried beans for next time.The last thing we tried was Maple-Cream Cheese Spread ~ no explanation needed:) ~ Wow. Just wow:)

I am always on the lookout for cookbooks which include natural alternatives for sugar. I dislike artificial sweeteners and want to limit my cane sugar intake. This is my second maple syrup cookbook and it is quickly becoming my favorite one.In addition to mouthwatering recipes (both sweet and savory), the author gives a history of maple syrup production as well as the modern methodologies used to extract the product and refine it to various grades of syrup.The photographs are outstanding and give a great vision of what the final dish should look like. I really appreciate good photographs as I am very much a visual type when it comes to food. I like to make sure that I understand what it should look like as well as taste.Of the recipes that I have tried, my current favorite is the Maple-Vinegar Roasted Pork. It gives my roast pork a very different flavor from my standard roast, so it gives me an additional dish for my repertoire. Additionally, there is a wonderfully simple recipe for Maple syrup candy that is easy to make and delicious to eat. These are just two of many recipes that I find outstanding in the book. It takes my bottle of maple syrup to different places than I ever expected and I am very pleased with the book.I received a digital ARC copy of this book from the publisher, Storey Publishing, LLC, via Netgalley. I liked the cookbook so well, I purchased a paper copy to keep in my kitchen at all times.

I bought this because of it's coffee chocolate chip cookie recipe. I don't like giving my grandchildren white sugar, so this recipe is PERFECT for giving them a sweet cookie without spiking blood sugar. Can't wait to try the other recipes. Update: I have found lots of wonderful recipes that taste fantastic. Can't speak highly enough about this book.

I bought this as a gift; I have a copy. I love all of Haedrick's cookbooks. While some of the recipes are a wee bit complicated or call for an ingredient not common in your pantry, I have to admit that if you follow the instructions, they usually turn out well. Living in Vermont, it's good to have a use for all that maple syrup flowing about.

Ken does a great job putting recipes together, this is the second cookbook I have of his using Maple Syrup.

Purchased as a gift for someone in another country where they don't have the luxury of going out and tapping their own tree. Very well received.

Like the dessert recipes! Also making my own sauces.

When I took this journey about four months ago, the things I was expecting to get from this book is knowledge already have pertaining to discipleship. I will say that most people have a misconception about discipleship thinking we all sit around a campfire singing kum ba yah; however that is not the case. This book allows the Holy Spirit to work in individual lives as they are being transformed by God himself as we work, go to school, and hang out with our friends. Transformational discipleship is about doing more in our pursuit of God to where when people see us they see a person after God's heart. As Christians we need the heartbeat of God to have compassion for our neighbors, city, schools, and elderly at which God will work in you as we all have an impact on someone's life. I highly recommend this book for those wanting to know how to I start discipling others and give encouragement along the way.

This book articulates so well the growth churches in America need. It’s a brilliant journey in rediscovering what we often miss in the discipleship process.

I have been looking for good models to consider as our church considers how to accomplish our mission statement of making disciples of Jesus. (shouldn't that be every church's mission statement?) First, though, we needed to seriously consider what it means to be a mature disciple of Jesus, and that led me to this book. I can say that it has been encouraging and helpful to read. It is not earth-shattering, but it is enlightening and I recommend it highly.Perhaps the best aspect of the book comes in the beginning, where the authors specifically state that their approach is NOT a model. It is a description of their findings after researching the issue about what makes for Christians who are maturing and growing in Christ. That is significant, in that the book does not purport to give a model to accomplish the goal of discipleship. Instead they showcase the principles and foci that bring authentic discipleship and then leave the actual modeling and accomplishment to the reader. I love this, because the situation of each church will be different and therefore implementation will be as well.The book's tone is approachable and readable; this is not a technical manual by any means. Geiger, Kelley, and Nation make sure to "put the cookies" on the bottom shelf and simplify wherever possible. I loved the venn diagram that makes up the heart of the book's information. The fact that they kept coming back to that reinforced the message as simple and important, and that was helpful.I am going to use this book to train our leaders.

Islamism and the adherents to the ideology, so called "Islamists", is concept that is currently breaking through esoteric usage and beginning to enter common parlance. What this book does, and beautifully at that, is introduce the reader to the political, theological, and philosophical foundations of the proponents of Islamism.The beginning part of the book explicates the contemporary arguments advocated by the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood, Hasan al-Banna, and follows that up with his disciple Sayyid Qutb. These communications have normally been limited to Arabic speaking audiences and the author has translated the original sources in such a manner that clearly and succinctly displays the passion, vigor, and rigor of the original ideology.Later in the book, issues such as the political context of Islam are debated, followed by gender issues in the Islamic context, then issues on fighting, and lastly violence. The last section is probably the one I have the least interest in, and this kind of subject matter in generally not pleasant to read. Some of the segments will be uncomfortable for some, and I would not consider this book a candidate for a "pleasure" read. Nonetheless, this is a valuable contribution to an important and relevant topic.I would assume that this book is not for the casual reader. It is a treasure of original sources translated into English and would be best utilized by those with a moderate background, and appreciation of, Islamic thought. I found the introductions in each of the segments to be invaluable and elucidating. While remaining short, they will walk the reader through the necessary historical background of the relevant author, and give you the requisite information needed to properly frame the proceeding material.Overall this book is a real gem to the researcher and scholar of Islamic thought, an invaluable reference for those of us who do not at present understand the Arabic language.

I absolutely loved this book. It is primarily a collection of translated works written by influential Islamists. the book itself, and every section is introduced by the two editors of the book and is heavily sourced and footnoted and detailed in its analysis making the book an excellent reference resource. I only really had two "complaints": the first was that, despite its already considerable length, I would have liked it to be longer and more encompassing. The second is that I would love to see an updated edition now that Osama bin Laden has been killed and Zawahiri is at the helm of Al Qaeda. It would also be great to see works on Al-Baghdadi, and Muhammad Yusuf, as well as the new wave of internet Islamists. The book does much to showcase the differences in the roots of modern Islamist discourse relative to traditional Islamic practices and discourse, with a particular emphasis on the seemingly anti-scholar rhetoric that many Islamists have come to utilize and come to rely upon to justify their own lack of formal religious education.

Having little background in Islamic beliefs, this book was of great help understanding the diversity within the religion. It served as a good primer for the breadth of Islamic beliefs with excellent introductions to each thinker without the polemics I've seen in other texts.

Nice starting book for people interested in modern Islamism. The selection of articles are quite comprehensive.

In my mind, required reading in this day and age. Especially via reading Qutb and Al Banai it is clear that an influential number of thinkers believe:1.The west is morally corrupt2. It is time to move from defense militarily to offense militarily3. All man made institutions must be "destroyed" for Allah to rule.It is not an exaggeration to say: This is Mein Kampf for the present day. It is impossible to say we did not know, we did not hear. High time the Western World ceased behaving like ostriches.

Since I'm a frequent visitor to the excellent CSS Zen Garden web site, I purchased this book hoping that it would enlighten me regarding the technical implementation of some of the more advanced CSS designs. Unfortunately, I think the book just misses the mark. What you get is a brief six page explanation of a particular design concept for each of the 36 included designs. This is all good, but I was hoping to see at least a few of the very advanced designs completely dissected in explanation, from beginning of the source to the end. Intermediate CSS coders will undoubtedly pick up a useful technique or two. Still, it's a good book that could have been great.

I enrolled in a basic website design class and the instructor mentioned the Zen Garden website. I was impressed enough by the web site to order the book. What I like about the book is that the author presents several different designs and then goes through the good, bad, potential bad, and also shows some of the code needed to create the effect. If you are interested in graphic design for websites, this book gets you thinking and planning your own designs.

I've only breezed through this book, but bought it because I wanted it as the companion to their website - css zen garden dot com - and I'm happy I did. You can download all the corresponding code from their site that goes along with this book (instead of having to type it all in manually).After 9 years of old-style HTML coding, I'm upgrading my skills to the new CSS/XHTML. This book takes the focus away (momentarily) from code and points to beauty. I'm looking forward to becoming a designer like the ones in this book.Beautiful and inspiring!

I bought this book understanding that it would help me learn CSS design, but soon found that it was not for the beginner but for an experienced CSS practitioner. The book is divided into themes such as 'Layout', 'Typography', etc. and illustrates the points being made by references to examples on the web site.You can browse to the relevant pages and read the CSS code to understand how effects were made. As such the book is an inspiration for beginners to aim for after they have had some experience with CSS, perhaps by going to the original inventors, Lie and Bos: Cascading Style Sheets: Designing for the Web (3rd Edition).

I bought this book (knowing it wasn't a how-to) on CSS, but hoping to gather something about coding from it. I realized, after just a couple chapters, that I've learned more about coding by simply studying the code of the csses(?) in the book.More importantly, I've become a better designer and artist because of this book. I've been a web designer/developer for about eight years and a graphic artist for about five. I thought I was alright, but this book taught me more than everything I've gleened in the past several years.Because of this (and, despite the fact that it's not what I thought when I purchased it), I give it five stars. Highly recommended!

Having the time of my life implementing much of this book into my sites. I'm very pleased.

[...] I already knew this would be a design book and not a CSS guide.The problem is that both the book and the site are misleading. These are essentially home pages by graphic designers. However as a practical matter, none of these designs would work site-wide - rather the point of a style sheet, after all. There's simply not enough screen 'real estate' to accommodate content in subsequent pages. In addition, the designs are such that tooling them to 'brand' across sub-pages sitewide would be very difficult, and the book provides no examples, guidelines, or suggestions for doing so.For inspiration, to see what you can do with color and layout, and for finding your own unique vision, this book may be useful. For designing sites of more than one page, however, this book falls short.
