This is a gentle, transformative book. Written for social justice activists, it has a much wider application in the America of 2018, where many people feel frightened, depressed, or angry about government actions against women, people of color, immigrant people, LGBTQ people, and the environment. The constant barrage of bad news has left many Americans feeling depleted, whether or not they are active in social justice work.Chapters focus on particular, possible reactions to these feelings, and on specific challenges that white and ableist privilege imposes on individuals. Oritz draws on her Mestiza community's spiritual traditions, suggesting strategies for creating nourishing rituals using the reader's own ancestry, experience, and traditions. She emphasizes how to identify one's strengths, how to manage stress, how to decide when and whether a job, relationship, or other situation has become untenable.Ortiz analyzes adaptive habits like hyper-vigilance using examples from her own life that are grounded in the body. For example, as a young person growing up, she "learned that my hypervigilance helped me to be courageous." As she grew into adulthood, she became more aware of how exhausting hypervigilance is.Each chapter ends with questions intended to lead the reader to internal knowledge, self-awareness, and peace. I enjoyed this interactive element and found real value in the questions Ortiz poses to her readers. For me, the best choice was to read the book slowly to fully integrate its wisdom.
Ms. Ortiz dives deep into the ways self care can be a transformative act for social justice movements. As an activist, I am usually turned off by writing about self care since much of the literature seems to come from a perspective that promotes extravagance or accomplishing goals that require time, money, or energy, I don't have.Sustaining Spirit, on the other hand, meets readers and activists where they are. This book offers wisdom from the author's own life on challenges such as finding perspective and not just goal setting, being okay with what's "good enough" versus perfection, and moving through grief when efforts fail.Ms. Ortiz's intersectional perspective allows for an expansive vision of self care, acknowledging that self care can be different depending on culture and identity. Ms. Ortiz even helps readers take responsibility for their own vision of self care by putting reflection questions at the end of almost every chaper. One of the most impressive and meaningful books I've read in a long time.
Ms. Ortiz has a rare talent; the ability to produce a beautifully written book that includes insightful, grounding advice for anyone involved in social justice and activism. I highly recommend this book!
I am not an activist, just a quiet concerned Midwest woman who worries about what is happening in our country. I read this book after a friend spoke of it. I love this book! Ms. Ortiz’s descriptive writing of her life gives me hope. I think all people should read this book. It is good for your soul.
This is a gorgeous, moving, and practical book. I loved it a lot.
Reading this book had my heart singing, not only because of the context and content of the material; and not only because it is written in poetic prose, but also because it is an indication to me of the coming evolution (or perhaps what’s already here) of disability culture, wherein we not only look outward to society and not only inward to our artistic selves, but inward also to our spirit and spiritual selves. Ortiz is a self-described “Disabled, Mestiza (Latin, Indigenous, White) raised in Latinx culture†in the U.S/Mexico borderlands. Her writing is clear, forthright and compelling as she divides her sections into Earth, Water, Fire, and Air, sandwiched between an introductory Grandfather Sun and a concluding Grandmother Moon. She offers reflections, concrete exercises to help readers delve into our own spirits, and anecdotes relevant to exactly what the subtitle says: self-care for social justice. And a shout-out to Reclamation Press for publishing this book!
This book, beautifully written from the soul, offers practical insight for anyone wishing to rekindle their own fires in their work for a better world. It weaves anecdotes, poetry, thoughtful reflections, and practices to rejuvenate the reader and activate a more sustainable approach to activism.
One of the best books I have read in a long time. Naomi Ortiz gives great perspective to people who work for social justice on a daily basis. The work we do can be very demanding on the body and the spirit. Naomi provides the methods to help us sustain that work.
